X is a graphical server, specifically in mandrake 10.1 you'll have X.org - it's what draws the GUI on your screen. specifically, for firestarter you have to have some parts of the gnome desktop installed (i.e. gtk2). It should be in the Mandrake repo's, and makes setting up a firewall very easy.
Oh, yeah, I vaguely remember that. But it's all automatic so it simply doesn't mater.

firestarter is very good - I've also used that in the past. It does really require you to use X though - which may be fine and, if you find shorewall pretty general, then you will find much the same in firestarter imho...
In what way does it require me to use X? Or should I say, "what's X"???
Kristi

I use firestarter rel 1.
Guarddog is good but dumps all output to syslog with no way to easily check what you want to see.
Hope you find joy.

25MAR05 releases 20050315 and 20050319 work against kernel 2.6.11.6 .
EDIT 19MAR05 you will need to get the 20050315 driver if you have the 2.6.11-1mdk kern (MDK10.2) (also 2.6.11-2)
ALWAYS CHECK the download page to get the latest driver!!!
Michel Xhaard did all the hard work on this and seems to be keeping it right up to date.
"this module is now known as spca5xx and has support for 124 webcams."Recent comment from the author:
PS i will release soon spcaview my "swiss tools" for the spca5xx and other webcams :) spcaview can ask the kernel through v4l to get the mjpeg streamdirectly from the hardware ( for example your Labtec Pro) and result in a
better performance and decrease the kernel load :))-- Michel Xhaard
List of cameras supported: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
Download page: http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html
Pay attention to the "quality" column there when thinking about a cam - my Labtec Pro is 5 star and great!!!
If you have already installed the NVIDIA drivers, ignore this step.
Get the APPROPRIATE kernel source:
Do uname -r to find the kernel module level of your system.
In root: Menu, System, Configuration, Packaging, Browse available Software:
Look for the source that matches your system.
(e.g. linux-2.6.x.x-xmdk (linux-2.6.11-1mdk for 10.2rc1) )
Click install. This will get the source, copy the config and create the link in /usr/src.
Look in /usr/src/ to make sure the kern source matches your /lib/modules release number EXACTLY.
Download the latest spca5xx tarball (see link above).
Expand it (I just click on it and use expand here).
this will create a directory similar to /home/<user>/USB_PC_Cam/spca5xx-20050301
In a root console, CD to that folder.
Do "make" there should be no errors. (takes a minute to do the compiles)
Do "make install" there should be no errors. (takes only maybe 10 seconds)
At this point you need to reboot.
To check your install: After you have rebooted, do "lsmod" in a console.
Among a bunch of other stuff, you should see:
spca50x 243640 0videodev 7168 2 cx8800,spca50x
Gqcam does a really nice job of displaying it. Gnomemeeting works very well.
Camstream is spasmodic at best with this driver.
In my system in v4l, it's video1 since video0 is my TV (cx880)
Hope that helps!
Kristi
PM me with suggestions for changes to this.

Update (my source had been updated to 24 - back to 12 now)
I'll start a new post in Hardware re webcam support.
Kristi

Thanks Adam. The cam I have is an Intel CS330 (Create and Share Delux)(ViewQuest Tech). When I was playing around with Xandros linux 2.6.9, I did get it to go with a "SPCA5xx driver I got from somewhere that was supposed to support a bunch of cameras, but the quality was very poor, at best - and maybe 1 frame every 2 seconds. I suppose I should try it again, but I'd rather find something that works with the 2.6.x kern. I have googled a ton on this subject - that was how I found the spca5xx driver. Oh, well - I'll keep looking!!!
Thanks!
Kristi

if you've installed the nvidia driver, then execute "nvidia-settings" and see if the settings options give you any joy... Working with TVs is a bitch!!!
Kristi
-
As for the webcam, plug it in! If a desktop icon for it pops up, then it works. A surprising amount of webcams do work in Linux, and Mandrakelinux usually supports those pretty well. If you plug it in and nothing happens, it's probably not supported.
Hi Adam, Is there any place I can look for what webcams are supported in MDK? Or, a better question: What's a good cheap webcam that MDK will support?
tia! (and thanks again on the nvidia prob/solution!!!)
Kristi

Just make a little script and run that file from the startmenu:
#!/bin/sh
cd /mnt/nwng/nwn
./nwn
Good luck.
Thanks! That worked! But can you help a shell newbie out?
what is the meaning/purpose of the first line? If I remove it and save it to nwn.sh and execute it with sh, it works just fine. or is the # just making it a comment?
confused!
Kristi (I have googled a bunch on this but still confused...)

MDK10.1 OE, KDE3.2.3
It seems that when I add things to KDE menu, I cannot specify them to run in specific user (like root), and I cannot specify that they are to run using a particular dir as work.
If I drag a menu item to the task bar, then, in properties/advanced settings, I can specify a user, but still can't specify a work dir.
eg: neverwinter nights game:
In a console, I can do
cd /mnt/nwng/nwn
./nwn
and it will run fine because the work-at addy is set by the "cd". In Xandros-linux, I could specify both user and work-at dir. Where can I specify them in MDK?
tia!!!

kristi, you're welcome! My patience in reading problems and helping isn't near what it used to be. I'm sorta, semi retired  Glad you're prob was fixed and that others step up to the plate
Me three!!!
:bounce8:
During the 3 months I was learning Xandros-linux I made over 450 posts, so I can sure understand that pooped feeling. Time to lean back and relax!!!!!

no, that doesn't say 'nvidia', it says 'nvidia-agp'. Which doesn't exist. The problem was simple, as the X log said - the nvidia kernel module wasn't loaded. either 'modprobe nvidia' as root or adding nvidia to modprobe.preload and rebooting fixes this.
Damn you're good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you in great profusion, Adam!!!!!!!!!

no change. I'll use Xandros since it comes with 2269 driver. maybe mdk10.2 will have it.

exactly what did you edit? There's no need to go into /lib/anythingIf I use init 5 it flashes console stuff at me 3 times and then says "cannot open master raw device /dev/rawctl no such file or folder.can you undo whatever you did? or uninstall and reinstall the driver? The installer will run depmod -a (? I think) or you can do it.
There is a doc'ed conflict between rivafb and Nvidia - the 2 drivers can not be accessing the same card at the same time per Nvidia. Modules where lines containing riva were commented out:
/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/modules.alias , .dep, .pcimap
Uninstall? I suppose I could - I've already done 3 MDK10.1 installs trying to get past this prob (mostly my own screwups!!!) (20 min each including changes to inittab and xorg.conf)
It installed just fine after it got and compiled the interface. It just gave me the warnings. I thought since this was the 3rd time I'd just remove them. Only took about 2 minutes.

Kristi uhoh - this was all listed under a 5 nv system so I can run kde - do you need me to go back to 3 nvidia and get that info? Not a prob if you do.

I went ahead and put raw into modprobe.preload, anyway, just to be sure, but it failed.
I have /dev/raw/rawctl which appears to be empty.
I also have /dev/rawctl which appears to be empty.
Much appreciate your time!
Kristi

Try this:
Login as your regular user
su to root
modprobe raw
<<hit ctrl-D>>
startx
If that works, then you need to add 'raw' (no quotes) to /etc/modprobe.preload
Nope. Just to be clear, I changed nv to nvidia, changed 5 to 3, rebooted and logged in to kristi, did su and password, did modprobe raw and hit enter (got prompt immediately), did <<ctrl-D>> (got "exit"), did startx and got the same problem.
Thanks anyway!

MDK10.1 fresh install - this is my 3rd attempt with this driver - same issue
/usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1-12mdk
/root/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run

I look in xorg.cong and change nv to nvidia.
reboot

EDIT: fixed by correctly installing Nvidia driver. 2/15/05
Hi and thanks for answering!
failed to initialize graphicsWhat videocard do you have? Nvidia? Install the nvidia driver.
"card is an XFX Nvidia Ge4Force Ti4200"
"MDK recognized it as a GE4 Generic"
Yeah, I figured that and last nighted started to follow the FAQ on installing the driver. Doing the init 3 killed kde but did not give me a prompt - so I ctl-alt-del'ed and went to bed.
Today I set my default runlevel back to 3 and booted into root .
did urpmi binutils got "everything's already loaded".
did urpmi kernel-source and it proceeded to load 42mb of /usr/src/linux-2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdk - really helpful on a 2.6.8.xx system!!!!!

Now looking for how I prepare it...

Hi, I'm on Mandrake 10.1
I used MCC to create a new partition for /usr, and created a dir/usr/NWNG
I copied nwresources129.tar.gz and nwclient129.tar.gz to NWNG.
did tar -xzf nwresources129.tar.gz
when that finsher, I coppied nwclient129.tar.gz to nwn
cd to nwn
did tar -xzf nwclient129.tar.gz
did ./fixinstall
did ./nwn
get "Error"
and that's all she wrote! I had this running when I was up on Xandros V3 (2.6.9kern) - I had it in a separate reiserfs partition back then - I did mount that partition to MDK10.1, but got "failed to initialize graphics" with that, so I thought I'd start over...
PS if I add 1.65 to 1.29 on MDK, I get the "failed to initialize graphics"
(XFX GeF4Ti4200 as generic GEF4, Viewsonic A75f monitor)
Thoughts?

MDK10.1ff and "spca5xx" webcam driver
in Tips and Tricks
Posted · Edited by kristi
Yep!!! I looked for a "5 star" camera and ordered the Labtec webcam Pro ($20+shpg, 2 days from Provantage) and Linux gqcam gives me an EXCELLENT picture. The cam sits nicely where ever I put it and slides back and forth in the base for different angles. the focus knob is slow and smooth and focuses to very close.
Definitely a YAYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Once again, MDK rocks!!!
