If you are trying to install 10.1, did you set up your easyurpmi to 10.1?
If that doesn't make sense, holler...

welcome to rpm hell.
I've been a unix sys admin for 10 years, and I know I can say I am intelligent person :)
admin'ing unix is WAY different to admin'ing windows.
learn the unix way, and every thing will be fine in unix.
Learn the windows way, and everything will fine in windows.
What you are experiencing is NOT a linux issue, it's a distro issue ...
enough from me :) .. I don't have answer either coz I don't use MDK anymore because of the RPM hell that I kept experiencing
You might take a look at Xandros V3 (free) it's debian, so no rpm's. It is proibably the most mature debian distro for folks coming from windows. Avoid kubuntu like the plague for a year or so.
I like MDK because of MCC and easyurpmi. If you set up easyurpmi correctly, then getting files should be easy. In many cases. But in others, if the distro has not already done the hard work in preparing the particular package you want to install on your particular release, you are pretty much on your own, in any distro. Truly, everyone is re-inventing the stone. And a lot of people are holding onto DOS3.0 type thinking and claiming it is great!
packages will install if dependencies have been set up correctly - either by the author, or by the distro. But there are a ton of packages expecting YOU to do the work. BAH! btdt

Sounds like a kdm problem. Try starting KDE from a terminal (when X hasn't started yet) by typing: startkde (or if that doesn't work by: kde)
Thanks for the reply devries! I assumed I had hosed my system so I just now rebuilt it from 10.2rc2 and then made it cooker current, then did the stuff suggested above for 10.2 (went smoothly).
But the same result. It comes to a logon screen with possible choices down the left and an analog clock and logon and menu buttons. I try to log in with either user or root but it just clicks the screen a few times and then bounces me back to the same screen.
Fortunately the menu button offers me "console logon" which is just cli where I can log in and type kde and 3.4 comes up nice as you please.
After the rebuild, on the first boot, I checked inittab and it said :5555: instead of :5: so I reset that. inittab looks okay. Maybe a prob in rc.sysinit or something. I think probably best not to worry about it since I can get in to 3.4, just not straight in. And 10.2 final will be along - better to shoot probs with that!
One question: when you are then looking at MCC software install for other kde 3.4 stuff to install, what do you use for your search argument? "kde"
Also, I tried doing urpmi kdepim kdeedu kdemultimedia and it asked me a few questions about which sound thing I wanted, then it said it couldn't install something because something was missing "(y,N)" I hit enter and it stopped. Maybe just rerun those?
OH - I lost the thing in menu to start a new session (i.e. to start root while in user. ) Where is it???

Kristi 3.4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey, that's neat!!!
but when I boot up it comes to this screen with a analog clock and a couple of boot choices, and a logon and a menu button and when I try to login, it clicks the monitor a few times and then clicks right back to the login screen.
This could be because when I first tried to install this, I did it with the 10.1 link, not having read down far enough in the thread to realize there was also a 10.2 link. Naturally there were lots of errors on the 10.1 versoin, and then I put the 10.2 version in and that went smoothly. Anyway, i found I could menu, console login from that screen - I log in and then type kde and 3.4 comes up very nicely.
Obviously I could re-install 10.2 rc2, but since I was cooker current that would take a bit, and expecting 10.2 final out imminately (wish I knew when - if it were more than a few days, I'd just redo 10.2rc2 and put it on correctly.....
Thanks for your work and investigation in this!!! - sure is nice!!!!!!!!
and any thoughts on how to fix the login loop bug...

It's a 10.2 / MDK2005LE and after problem. I changed the original note. Thanks.

EDIT: 21MAY05 It is best to download latest Mandrake rpm Guarddog from author
on page http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/#download
http://www.simonzone.com/software/mdkrpm/g...0-2mdk.i586.rpm
and install it by clicking on it, then start it (from menu, system, configuration, guarddog) and set your parameters - only then are you protected.
.
Ignore the patch below. (it is still needed if you get guarddog from Mandriva easyurpmi)
a note on guard dog - MDK10.2, MDK2005LE and after - don't forget - after you have installed guarddog and set up the parameters the way you want them,
run
if [ ! -e /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup.d/10Guarddog ]; then /bin/ln -s /etc/rc.firewall /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup.d/10Guarddog fi if [ ! -e /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown.d/10Guarddog ]; then /bin/ln -s /etc/rc.firewall /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown.d/10Guarddog fi
as a ROOT SHELL
otherwise it won't activate on reboot. guarddog prob. Code from Rolf Pederson.

about 80 cooker current upgrades went in after it. Smooth as silk
Nice work cooker crew. I use Firefox, Thunderbird, Guarddog (with mod), NWN, TVTime, Pan NNTP, Azureus and a bit of other stuff. KDE is now behaving nicely.

(I understand we own great thanks to Chris for moving and resurecting the mandrakeusers.org. Thanks!!!!!)

Another thought I have occasionally had on this - make sure you boot in to the kern that you 're going to use - in other words, don't boot kern 1, then urpmi load kern and source for 6 and try a nvidia build against 6- it won't work. reboot to kern 6 , then it shold work.
Hope that helps.

I have tried Kaffeine, totem, mplayer, and Xine. My choice for DVDs is xine.
But when I stick a DVD in, Kaffeine starts up 15 seconds later. it also starts a TSR that stays there even if you tell Kaffeine to "quit". I have to go to task mgr and kill it.
How can I kill Kaffeine? (with a lead pipe, in the study, by Mr Plum)

I stuck in a dvd. 15 sec laqter Kaffeine started. I told it Quit.
I still had 2 entries in task mgr that I couldn't kill ( not enough permissions.
Switch to root. Lo! Kaffeine is merrily playing the movies over there. Tell it to Quit. Check task mgr.
Remove Kaffeine.
Go back to user Stick in DVD. Totem starts. I kill it and Lo! there are 2 totems running in task mgr.
Go back to root and remove totem.
Go back to user and stick DVD in and . . . NOTHING HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I can start xine at my leisure and watch the movie.

Hi, I am a Latvian computer virus, but because of poor technology in my country, unfortunately I am not able do any harm to your computer.
Please be so kind to delete one of your important files yourself and then forward me to other users.
I love that sig!!!!!

If they would only release Adobe Creative Suite for Linux I could switch all my business over now... bleh...
I like NVU but I like Adobe better. Maybe when Wine ages more...
Um... I hear you. Also just learned that Nvu is based on the breakup of Mozilla suite - wondered why the message boxes were the same!!! The problem with windows is the problem with windows... and therefore the struggle that wine will have providing a platform. Everyone in windows programmed for the exception. windows IS 50,000 exceptions.

I think Nvu is what you're after, its designed to be a Dreamweaver for linux. Their site has a mandrake rpm for download:
Yes! exactimundo!!!!!!! Took me a bit to realize that I had to make a textbox out of a single cell table, from then, everything was simple. Very easy!!!
THANKS!

Coming from windows where i used MS publisher and Spinwriter, I am looking for a gui wysiwyg program to maintain a small simple website. Only one I know of is in Mozilla Suite. Bujt I'm sure there must be a ton of others.

I just installed the 7167 driver on Mandrake 10.1
No problems to report yet...........
I've installed 7167 on 10.2b3 with nop probles at all.
Plus I am getting better overall performance running gl-117 over 6129 previously installed.
So far so good
Yep, me, too - works great!

Rolf came up with a very simple fix:
Install guarddog.Then as root console:
cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup.d
ln -s /etc/rc.firewall 10Guarddog
voila!
I have tested this with guarddog-2.4.0-1mdk.i586.rpm
I'll test 2mdk tomorrow.
I am running rc1 & cooker current
