  1. this newbie says: get VMware out of the loop completely. Check and re-check how much unpartitioned space you have for the install. Also when you're installing do not copy the CD's to disk - you will not have room and you will get a ton of errors. hope that helps. Kristi

    KDE Launcher

In KDE desktop menu, icons, align to grid play with that a bit and see if that will do what you want.
  3. Just got back from a bunch of errands - thanks to both of you! Hey - neat new KDE3.4 background (I musta just updated! - duh!) Also the menu is very tall now - gotta figure out how to knock it down to size (heehee) Okay - just looked at /etc/rc#.d - had forgotten that they were shells. That wouldn't be too big a deal - a one liner for each, but I had forgotten about the "K" and "S" bit - the K would be easily and I guess I would just ignore the S (operationally, I do that anyway. There is a way in the monitor to tell it to shutdown, but that would be having Belkin power off instead of Linux. Bad Belkin! - Normally when there is a power outage (1:30AM - another NSTAR "upgrade", once a month), I am sitting at the computer and shut things, including Mandriva, gracefully. Belkin will do it auto if I'm not there, I hope!!! Anyway, all I "need" is to put /usr/local/bulldog/upsd in /etc/rc.local, and make sure it is root executable which it was. I took both of them out of my user autostart, and tried adding a link to /usr/local/bulldog/monitor with user, not root permissions, and it worked beautifully. upsd takes a while to start as it sets up a "network" where it's the "master", and its just about ready to send info to monitor when monitor gets started in user. Is it possible to put a 5 sec delay in front of monitor starting? So anyway, thanks to papaschtroumpf, even though I went Adam's route (thanks Adam!!!) I also did not know if, in Mandriva2006, everything goes through 1, or 2, or 3, if it is going to be run in 3 or 5 ? I know a 3 will do the 3 and a 5 will do the 5, but that's all. I don't think a 5 will do a 4 because it goes directly from 3 to 5. Or am I more in a fog than I think. tia Kristi
  4. I appologize because I think I have asked this before and not noted it down. Belkin has 2 driver programs that need to be started up with root proviliges. I did hang them in user autostart but that's getting old as it likes to start 2 of them when I log into root and that, while amusing, is not useful. I think I should (?) put them somewhere in /etc/rc#.d where # is 1, 2, or 3 I think this is right and can I put them in in such a way that they don't ask for a password. tia! Kristi [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  5. Bingo!!!!!!!! - I get to say "you clutz!!!!!!!!!" But I also get to say a HUGE thanks!!! :D :D :D Now, how do I automate it, even a little? EDIT scratch that - it's too darn easy! tia Kristi EDIT2: looks like Simon and Laurent (cooker) are starting to see it as a real prob so I'm sure it will be fixed by b2 But DEVRIES gets the prize!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  6. No "start new session" in menu. You are aware of this but are keeping it secret from the rable because: d) this is a doctoral study - what will an ant do if you take of one leg?, 2 legs? 9 legs? At what point does it start exhibiting psychotic behaviour. You want us to find ctrl-alt-esc hehehehehehehehehehe but also tell me how to kill a root process in user with ctrl-esc that has root power. Kristi 2006 cooker current (edited and cleaned up a tad... :)
  7. Thanks - I'll look at this tomorrow - there's a description up on the site, and the source expansion has an example - lots of stuff to play with. Thanks!
  8. Try building the plugin from source and follow the install instructions on the mplayerplug-in site (link in a previous post) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I did try that but became frustrated at the point of it not finding mozilla-plugins, so I went back to MCC and uninstalled mplayer and reinstalled mplayer plus about everything related including plugins. It put the plugins in /usr/lib/mozilla I copied them to /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.2 keeping the plugin and the component separate. I then cranked up firefox and BBC and video worked immediately (chosing windows media). I then checked that language site but it would not work as it was trying to go through mplayer. I found that MP3 had been automatically checked, so unchecked it. Now the language site worked. I then went back to BBC and tried an audio and it specified realplayer (they do that). It played fine with no change and is playing through rp. However it automatically re-put-a-checkmark for MP3 (in firefox/edit/preferences so when I went back to the language site, it tried to play it through mplayer again. So I need to either find a way to get it to play through mplayer correctly, or leave it's hands off the MP3 checkmark, or just change it manually each time , which is not a big deal. Kristi EDIT - I believe mplayer is truncating the first 1/2 second or so - where can I configure the mplayer plugin? tia
  9. nope, I still get nothing - it says no suitable plugin available. At leaset RP asks for the RP program, even though it's already there. humph
  10. choose wmv where? in the bbc thing? Nothing supports wmv under lnux.
  11. what it doesn't do for me is play BBC video clips - it keeps asking to install the realplayer plugin.
  12. Yeah, it doesn't seem to be able to play it, or play it completely with mplayer. I did inadvertantly get it to work perfectly with realplayer. not sure how so I am going to try to undo everything realplayerish and install it again, because I have realplayer in 2 places - it should be in user/local, I think but I also have in in firefox/plugins - I know how that happened. and I did have to go ahead and allow the bad signature thing and yes, it caused no probs. Back in 10 min. Kristi <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah (wound up doing a full install since my trash had been trashed I installed RealPlayer (please understand that realplayer is against my religion) - I think I got an rpm from real. it installed to /use/local . I forgor to clear out the plugins in user/.mozilla (sorry, so all I really know is while the mplayer plugins are in there, it won't work, but if the two rp plugins are there AND I go into edit preferenced and douple click mp3 and RE-choose /usr/loca/lrealplayer or whatever, then when I click on one of those letters, a little RP player pops up and plays it - good fidelity. So Thanks!!! Kristi (off to do easyurpmi and about 253 cooker updates

  14. Thanks for trying! I installed it via MCC (same release, but no change. stopped started firefox, no change. Do I have to do anything inside firefox. Thanks. Kristi
  15. where do you find those? The site that brought up this question is http://www.frenchtutorial.com/standard/pro...on/alphabet.php Kristi
  16. I do not hear anything. No matter what I put in the firefox/edit/preferences/ it does not seem to work - for example, if I put mplayer in there I get only the tail end ot the soundbyte. can't get realplayer installed - can't get its plugoin in firefox have no idea what I'm doing here. Kristi

    bad signatures

Trying to install RealPlayer so I can play mp3's in browser (Firefox) Downloaded RealPlayer10GOLD.bin set it to executable and ./executed it per instructions. Get ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Anything I try to install with MCC gives me a signature error: early on in this MDK/MDV game, I just ignored it and installed it anyway. Last time I did that I had to re-install 2005LE. I am running 2006 cooker sorta-current - no updates for last day or 2 (lazy) How can I play mp3s that are in a browser page like http://www.frenchtutorial.com/standard/pro...on/alphabet.php ? How can I get a decent signature and/or install what I need to get by this? tia!!! Kristi
  18. I have had super results with my shuttle AN35N mobo, nforce chipset, and mobo sound (which I think is a realtec chip. KMix works beautifully, and xine, Mplayer, Kaffeine, and anything else I have tried seems to work just fine. I went up to a language site and clicked on some sounds - a small mp3 downloads and then something tried to play it, but I only get the last little bit of the sound. i tried setting mp3 to amrock, audacity, etc, but nothing seemed to change it at all. (If I use say audacity to play the mp3 in temp, it plays fine.) Any tips? tia!!! Kristi
  19. Thanks much Devries!!!!! Is this a permanent kind of thing or only till it gets fixed. It has gotten to the point that I can run 99.99999% of stuff in user because things will ask for a root password if needed. Thanks! Kristi
  20. The start new session in menu is gone. There is a switch user but I run 1 user system. There is an Add to Panel/Applet/Quick Launcher (little rocket ship, but that puts a tiny window on the taskbar that says Error KDE Panel "Malformed URL" with an OK button. How do I get into root while I am in user? tia! Kristi
  21. Yes. I "expect" it to break and all I have to do is pop the dvd in and redo 2005LE. Very minor. Give me an excuse to play with the security.
  22. Seems pretty damn stable, in spite of a few mumblings on cooker, everything I use works just fine so far. kde3.4's stable. I'll pound it tonight. Kristi
  23. oh. I see 2005 is there now in easyurpmi. oh well - I guess I'm on the unstable track. oh well.
  24. when I set up easyurpmi several days ago, 10.2 wasn't there so I just used cooker. works fine. At least with kern source and Nvidia. Kristi 2005LE - only took me 4 installs to get the nic to work - must be a good release........ And I was cooker current. Damn security.
