  1. Thanks, changing permissions to 777 is what I did, but I now realize that I have to use the usb-stick on windows machines as well every one in a while, so it's back to vfat. (Can someone mark this topic as solved?)

    Out of curiosity: why is ext3 useless for usb-sticks?

  2. The suggestion by daniewicz is working just fine... just get sure you are passing the correct path to the firefox binary.

    You can also pass them via the thunderbird UI: preferences/general/preference editor

    If the three above strings- network.protocol-handler.app.ftp , network.protocol-handler.app.http and network.protocol-handler.app.https do not exist you have to create them by hand.

    ....

    I'm also a great XFCE4 fan, and found that the indicated way to integrate my mail app and web browser to the desktop is named Opera. It puts Firefox to shame, while the embeded M2 mail client does not have much to envy from Thunderbird- maybe from Claws, but certainly not from Thunderbird.

    Yes, that works. I didn't find this in the thrunderbird preferences, but edited the file by hand. It was still set to mozffremote. Thanks guys. And no, I'm not completely happy with either firefox or thunderbird, but I need one of firefox's extensions for my work, and and I can install both here at home and at work (windows, alas).

    thanks again

  3. Thanks, daniewicz and yossarian. Yes I have tried Gnome's Preferred applications, as well as xfce's, but they don't work. Which worries me, because they should. I'll try editing the prefs.js of thunderbird, but that would still be a workaround, because it wouldn't set the preferred browser for hyperlinks in other applications.

  4. It worked for me. It did take a long time, so I went to bed before it finished. This morning I did have to fix the nvidia-driver, because for some reason I had two different versions of kernel module and driver, but uninstalling all nvidia stuff and then reinstalling it via 'set up the graphical server' in the hardware configuration menu did the trick. And so far everything else seems to work.

    So as far as I'm concerned: congratulations mandriva on a good job. Easiest update/upgrade ever. The new splash screen looks as if xorg is malfunctioning though.

  5. Hello

    I have an 8-in-1 cardreader. After putting a cf card in with an angstrom rootfs, taken straight from an ipaq, it isn't recognized anymore. That is, it's not in the fstab, the red lights don't come on, and only the usb still works. Can anyone give me a pointer how to get it back?

  6. Hi Ian

    I think 2008 disables ipv6 by default, because it is turned off on eth0.

    What's been happening the last couple of times is that it takes about ten minutes to give signs of life, then little by little it will start to blink more frequently, and eventually a link is established, and then a while later the link is stable. Takes about twenty minutes. It's as if it has to warm up.

  7. Hi Ian,

    this is the output of mii-diag eth1:

    Basic registers of MII PHY #24: 3000 7829 0041 6800 0541 45e1 0007 2801.

    The autonegotiated capability is 0140.

    The autonegotiated media type is 100baseTx-FD.

    Basic mode control register 0x3000: Auto-negotiation enabled.

    Basic mode status register 0x7829 ... 782d.

    Link status: previously broken, but now reestablished.

    Your link partner advertised 45e1: Flow-control 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx 10baseT-FD 10baseT, w/ 802.3X flow control.

    End of basic transceiver information.

    mii-tool -w gives:

    14:20:26 eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

    14:20:30 eth1: no link

    14:20:31 eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

    14:20:33 eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

    14:20:56 eth1: no link

    14:20:58 eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

    14:21:07 eth1: no link

    etcetera. So it looks to be on auto. I can't make any sense of this behavior: yesterday it worked perfectly, then this morning it wouldn't even blink, and now it's patchy, but getting better.

  8. this is ifcfg:

    DEVICE=eth1

    BOOTPROTO=dhcp

    ONBOOT=yes

    METRIC=10

    MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no

    USERCTL=no

    RESOLV_MODS=no

    IPV6INIT=no

    IPV6TO4INIT=no

    DHCP_CLIENT=dhclient

    NEEDHOSTNAME=no

    PEERDNS=yes

    PEERYP=yes

    PEERNTPD=no

    i would hate to reinstall the nic, now that it works. i'm pretty sure i didn't get options for speed and duplex when i installed it before via mcc.

  9. Hello everyone

    I wonder if anyone could help me with my ethernet connection. My ethernet connection with the dsl gateway went flaky, so i put in a new ethernet card, but it remains patchy. The light goes on and off. This is from /var/log/messages:

    Is this a hardware problem, or is something misconfigured? It's driving me nuts. Any help wuld be appreciated.

  10. So could it have something to do with the fact that I had installed the 2007.1 gnome live version first, then installed 2007.1 powerpack? Because I've done many installs of mandrake/iva keeping the /home dir intact, but this is the first time this happened.

    I guess I'd better check the other user's files too, anyway.

    Thanks Ian.
