I have a feeling it won't be too good news for me as a standard member, but which levels are the new Mandriva release available to?

Also, noob question, but I presume there will be a corresponding entry in easy urpmi and all that..?

The original bittorrent client is fine (just urpmi bittorrent as root in a terminal or search for bittorrent in the Mandriva Control Centre), though doesn't have as many features as Bit Tornado (urpmi BitTornado or again search the MCC) or Azureus. I like Azureus - it has lots of features, stats and tweaks available, but it is rather bloated and has the most noticeable effect on connection speed IMO. It also requires you to have Java installed on your computer (no big problem and not a bad idea anyway).

There is a rpm available for Azureus (just google azureus mdk rpm - its from mandrakeclub.nl) but its an older version and it'll bug you to upgrade. You can of course just get the latest version off the site and install (its a doddle) - its better to use a rpm if you can.

edit: Oh worth looking at BitTornado (many people seem to rate it) - just the rpm buggers up on my system (starts telling me about .gif image errors?!?!)

TBH, it wouldn't surprise me. MS make sure that any pro-stats that it can find or generate are quickly rammed down everyone's throats. Just have a look at Newsforge or Linux Today. Big FO MS adverts - Linux Today even has a 'Linux Resource Centre' (sponsored by Microsoft) which recounts all the latest pro-MS stuff...its verging on sickening.

Desperately trying not to be anti-MS, but when their methods are so brazen, it gets difficult.

Firefox, Krusader, Evolution, Kopete (why are people down on Kopete - its great!), Amarok.

Near Everyday:

Bloofish, GIMP (though I really must get pixel32), OOo Writer, K3b, NVu, Totem

I'd say Mandriva is quite powerful, whilst most other distros are somewhat powerful. Windows, of course, is slightly powerful and Macs are a bit powerful.

I think that clears it up.

Mandriva may know where your children play, but it segfaults when trying to work out what you did last summer.

All of this open source development on various Linux distros and we still don't have font rendering as good as windows? Wow...

Hmm, I recently retried Windows (XP Pro with SP2) and one of the minor annoyances was the scraggy fonts on Windows. :unsure: Perhaps its just the way my computer is set up, but you'll have to look elsewhere for a stick to beat Mandrivalinux with!

To answer the question, can you set GNOME to use hinting for certain font point sizes like in KDE? If you can, it may be worth having a play as it seems to make fonts more spindly, but clear..

Not exactly the end of the world, but does anyone know how to stop KDE from putting that dotted box around icon names (see pic) - would be fine if it would disappear, but it rarely does.

Also, that 'Menu' sign over the mandrake star - seems to be overlaid on the icon..

Just installed Kbiff so I could have notification of new mail whilst using evolution. It works fine aside from the fact that the systray icon has..err..gone.

Well, its not gone - the space where its supposed to be is there and I can click on the space and get the usual options (see screenie), but it would be nice to have an icon there.

It occurred after I changed the icons to something more nuvola-ish in the home .kde directory, but whatever I do, I can't seem to get the icons to reappear :(

Hiya

Just trying out Ubuntu (Hoary) and it appears to have problems with my NTL Broadband connection (2Mbit thing that goes through a set-top box and ethernet). I used it for a day or so and everything was hunky-dory, but then it stopped. Couldn't fetch mail. Domain names not recognised etc etc, left it for a day or so assuming it was a NTL problem that would eventually be resolved, but it wasn't..so I called NTL who checked the connection and reported that it was a problem on my (PC) side and had deep-inhalations of air when I mentioned the word 'linux' (though to be fair, they did try). Reinstalled Ubuntu..worked for a bit then, stopped again (permanently) so I have gone to Windows (someone tell me where the 'stop telling me the bloody obvious' button is) XP and so far (1 hour in) its still working. Haven't tried it on Mandrake, though I will in a coupla days.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated - I have done the usual searches with no luck, though I am starting to guess that it may be a ethernet card / motherboard problem :( :(

Ok after MUCH fiddling and looking around, found this in the 'comments' section of the news headline within mandrakeclub

Go to the downloads section and pick the package you want, then grab the link (something like https://www.mandrakeclub.com/torrent.php?f_...tTGludXgtMjAwNS etc etc

Get rid of the 's' on https and then add ':8080' after mandrakeclub.com so the above example should look like this:

Then it 'just works' ;)

Seriously though, I don't mind using BT to save Mandriva's bandwidth, but pleeease sort out the links..it should take hours just to start downloading the silly thing - I nearly went all ubuntu!

Joined MandrakeClub yesterday so I could access 2005LE and to 'pay' for the OS I've been using the last few months. Anyway, everything went fine until I tried to get the torrent to work - it just ain't happening. I've downloaded it and tried it in Azureus and it just comes up 'filenotfound'...so I checked out the club page and downloaded the recommended BT client...didn't work, so used the recommended CL client (btcurses.py or whatever), but that just comes up 'filenotfound'..so I rechecked the page again and noticed the thing about transparent proxies..

..clicked on the external site which suggested that I was behind a proxy..so I checked out the mandrakeclub transparent proxy page..and no torrent for 2005LE! :( Bit confused by the whole transparent proxy thing as I have no problems downloading files thru torrents usually..anyhoo

Last resort I tried the http access thing and got a list of mirrors via email to download the isos, but aside from the fact that only one works for me...there is no 2005LE! :( :(

Another resource management / strategy game (woo), but perhaps not that exciting :( Based around two tribes on an island (natives and vikings) with the usual palaver of grabbing what you can then going and attacking. Graphically its fine with the usual overhead and zooming options and cutsey, but it kinda lacks features. and doesn't compare well with other games of its ilk (not even with the ancient AOE TBH) - only played the demo (which is 'feature limited') but the list of additions you get when you pay up ($25) didn't seem that impressive (e.g. a third building type, a coupla troop types). It does have an update option in-game so hopefully some more stuff will be added.

You missed the wink - I was trying to get the point over to you that there are just a few more things more important (in terms of workupability) than an app that enables you to pay for music to the people who distribute it.

dvdcss is not a hack against an any independent app or co ;) I do it on linux only to check out the devel of such. I use powerdvd on xp. I have $100-200  to spend on an OS....but not $1000. That's all I mean by the lack of $. I don't mind paying a fair price, like I do for music ;)

I'm still calling the police - you are using it nonetheless..AND you are stopping other DVD player producers from making money - they'll be on the streets - because of you! ;) At least I (theoretically) am paying what Apple ask - those poverty-stricken managers at Apple won't have to beg for crumbs tonight!

Well, if you mean encrypted dvd's of course...that's a necessity for anyone that is linux only. There is 10 legit other ways to get your music a 200 ways to play it, so no one needs itunes. Not the case with dvd's now is it? Hello.

So I can assume that you use these terrible, kiddie-fiddling, kitten-murdering hacks that enable you to play DVDs on linux, even though you've admitted that you have Windows and can play them legit on one of the many DVD apps available for XP? God knows what you'd say if you could just go and play them on some 'box' that you could link up to your TV ;)

Not the case with a free itunes, now is it? You did NOT use FOSS software to enable you to legitimately pay for music. You used FOSS crackware  that gives a secure, repectable, linux community a bad name ;)

If I did use iTunes on linux then it would be due to the lack of alternative, no DRM is just a bonus. Did you use that DVD decryptor because you didn't have one on windows or couldn't use one of those mysterious DVD-linked-to-TV devices that certainly don't exist?

These sites work well, it's the OS's plugins that do not. I told you what to do about that, and you have 2 choices. Why you'd think it escapes me when I already told you to help in developing the poor plugins/os that it doesn't work well in does escape any reasoning (1. 2. 3. 4.)

As I explained clearly before, I can't help with development of any software directly, only in promoting stuff that may indirectly help, if that and a bit of money doesn't do anything then so be it, but I do think with your attitude you should write immediately to Mandrake, Ubuntu, Xandros etc and demand that they desist from positioning their distros towards newbies - I mean how are they going to help?

I presume you never play encrypted CDs in linux then? Perhaps you should invite me around your house and I'll go around and name a zillion minor laws that you're probably transgressing in your daily living. Using FOSS software to enable me to legitamately pay for music won't be disturbing my sleep, believe me. As we're 'here' I assume that you actively protest against dodgy laws that do actually matter.

I'm a nurse, not a programmer. HTML is the limit to my 'skills' and even thats not great. If you are seriously suggesting that I should stick to XP (Macs are irrelevant as I don't have the cash) then thats quite sad. It may have escaped your notice, but you can actually help out in a small way without being an expert in this field i.e.

1) Promote FOSS software generally (I know of quite a few people on my site who have 'made the switch' to FF or OOo due to a couple of us positively promoting FF and OOo - I'll do the same for Evolution when it comes out for Windows and keep pushing those screenies :) )

2) Tell people how you got past problems - most on here seem to mention this

3) Report bugs (gotta admit, I don't usually do that as I try and find a way around)

4) Using FOSS - do you think the people who develop KDE / Gnome and whatnot only do this so that they can make sure techies have something to go on about and proudly state that they would never use?

TBH, I'll feel lucky if I get an email back :( I can understand people like PTV not wanting to use formats that will work without having to dump loads of dodgy Xine hacks on my computer as linux ain't popular as a desktop (even though I still have a subscription to their services ) But it sends me up the wall when smaller websites, who willingly promote FF/Mozilla can't be arsed to do some simple changes to make them work better.

Noticed on slashdot that the National Lottery site complains if you use an insecure browser like FF and suggests you use something more secure like IE 5.5 :D That'll be my next nagging target :)

Rather unfair if you ask me - he's enabling us to pay the same amount as everyone else - though without the (in general, though less so with iTunes) restrictive DRM. The absolutely simple solution to this is to make an official iTunes client for linux..so IMO, apple have themselves to blame. Though I am sure they have MUCH bigger things to worry about a few linux users paying them! :)

Thanks iphitus and Adam - like I said, its nothing terribly important - obviously I can just stick a microphone in. The other thing is trying to show other people that much more is poss with GNU/Linux than they probably think. Its easy to say 'virues? spyware?' when the windows people get their usual problems, but its another thing to actually be positive, beyond showing a few screenies. Bah, the output:

OK, the bluetooth dongle works a treat and recognises both the phone and the headset (Logitech HS01) and I can move stuff between phone and computer easily with KbluetoothD. Now KbluetoothD is connected to the headset and gives me a connection address (00:0D:44 etc etc) and recognises the device etc etc. This has to be good.

Now, I don't suppose any of you clever people could translate this Skype thread, which refers to this article, which refers to this. Its all so waaay beyond me at the moment and without some guidance I'll probably do more harm than good! Skype is telling me that I should be making headset calls through /dev/dsp' which does exist, but the route inbetween has phrases like 'compiling kernels' and applying patches.

It won't be the end of the world if I can get the bluetooth headset to work Skype and its certainly not a 'reboot' windows kinda situation, but it would be quite cool! The set up is a pretty much standard mandrake 10.1 jobbie using KDE.
