  1. I'm actually using the 1.5.5 version I got through red carpet. If you like the current version, you'll love the new version when it is released. It filters spam automagically using spamassin. You can do that with the current version too, but you have to configure it yourself. I can't wait until the new version is final.
  2. Since the directory does actually exist on the server I would suspect that it is too busy to connect to you. sometimes they will not return a message about too many connections. I would try another mirror if I were you.
  3. I have and it does work. just back up your files in case! :o
  4. You can get lots of extra space out of XP by doing a simple command at a DOS prompt. Just type in this code: format c: /u This is one of the best kept secrets in the Windows community. I did this a while ago and I gained space on a whole hard drive. I would highly reccommend it!
  5. Ummm..... lemme think about it some more. I'll post later today if I can come up with anything. You are so close to getting it. You could check your config from a console using the drakconf command while logged on as root. Also see if you can ping an outside IP address from the console. That should at least tell you if you have connectivity.
  6. Looks like you're picking up an external IP. Seems like a DNS issue to me. Might want to call the ISp and ask them for a DNS server address. In the control center you can put in a DNS server address. I'm not at my linux box right now (at work on crappy XP) or I could give you specific directions to set it up. You can set it up from the command line, but I have always had good luck with mcc. The fact that your eth0 is coming up and picking up an external IP is good, I just think it cannot do a DNS lookup. Try opening a browser and typing http://68.3.180.152:8080/ in the address bar. If you get my Linux page that is under construction, then we need to configure a DNS server for you.
  7. How big is your HD? I have Mandrake running on an old 760 but I think it is 8.0 or 8.2 I didn't have enough space to load anything newer IIRC. You have to do a HD install because of the fact that you can't use the floppy and the CD at the same time. You can put more RAM in that machine, I think I have 80 MB in mine. I don't think 10.0 is a good idea as it requires 128MB RAM. My experience so far with 10 has not been stellar, but you have to remember it is not an official release yet. 9.2 is my favorite still, and I'm hoping 10 will get there when they release it. You should try an FTP install of SuSE. I have had real good luck with that on several old laptops. Good luck! -Tim
  8. ALSA does indeed work with that card and sounds wonderful with my 5.1 setup too! Go for it.
  9. Don't worry, I'm sure he'll get all that prOn sooner or later, he's just being impatient.
  10. OK, sorry it took me so long, but I do have a life other than Linux.....no really I do. Anyway, the link to the paride page is at http://www.torque.net/parport/paride.html If you have a 2.4 kernel or higher the drivers are built as modules so you can just add what you need as the article says. First, as root do: insmod paride This is the parallel port IDE support module then insmod epat which is the HP driver then insmod pt The driver for the parallel tape device At that point you should hear your drive doing some locating on the tape provided you have a cartidge loaded. After that I just use the normal tar commands to write the archive to tape. Note that most of these drivers do not supprot compression on the device itself, but that doesn't mean you can't make a .gzip file and then save it to tape. I myself prefer not to do this as it can be a problem if your media goes bad, you lose the whole archive. If your data isn't compressed you can usually read at least some of it. Hope this helps! :D
  11. I have been using an old HP Travan parallel tape drive for some time. Its a Colorado 5G, uses tapes with a 5 gig capacity (compressed). Yep, it's slow, but I'd rather use that than back up to CDR. You have to load the appropriate kernel modules to use the pt (parallel tape) drivers, but that is not hard at all in 9.0 or 9.1. If anyone here is interested, I will post a link to a how-to on the parallel devices. The nice thing is you can span volumes, I just set it up to run at night or whenever I'm not on the machine and feed it tapes when it needs them. Once you get a knack for what you DON'T have to back up, you don't need that much space anyway.
  12. Been thinking about going to 9.1 anyway so it would be good that the card is supproted. Maybe I should just change the card and then immediately do the 9.1 install and the card should be detected and set up. Of course I'll run a tape backup before I do all this, even if it takes 7 or 8 hours
  13. No problem, I don't boot into X automatically anyway. I haven't found any drivers yet, but I checked the Mandrake hardware compatablilty list and the card is on the "known hardware" category so it should work I would think.
  14. I have one of these cards with S-VID out and VIVO and am thinking about installing it on my box with MD 9.0. I have a GeForce 2 in the machine right now. Will I have to do anything besides just shut down remove the old card and install the new one and restart? Does anyone know if there is an RPM package for the drivers? I have already searched google and just got more confused. This is one area where I feel Linux needs serious work. I know it is because of the way gaphics are done with XFree but there has to be a way to simplify it. :? Thanks for the help!
  15. I run an HP Officejet V40. HP actually supports this model on Linux and has a specific driver for it. This is the best printer I have ever used bar none. I used to be a strict Epson man having used a Stylus Color500, and also an 850 for a long time. The problem I had with Epson is if you don't use them much since you only relace the ink tank and not the print head when replacing cartridges, the heads tend to become clogged and you can never get them right again. If you use the printer every day, this doesn't seem to be an issue. The upside to this is that the cartridges cost less, but I found that I was still using more ink as I had to keep cleaning the heads all the time. I work for a company with 19,000 users and we use a variety of printers including Lasers and ink jets. Lexmark makes a very good laser but I purchased 2 of their ink jets and returned them before settling on this OJ V40. The best feature on this machine is that you can copy, or fax without the computer even being on (although mine is always up). The quality of the scans and copies is also amazing with this printer, better than any printer/multifunction device I have used, and no I don't work for HP, as a matter of fact I had to bring myself to even try it, but now that I have, I'm hooked. :mystismiles: Just my $.02
