  1. RPG and secondarily strategy. I play Baldur's Gate and Age of Empires a lot.
  2. Also, there should be no problem starting thunderbird, if download from mozilla.org. Just download the tarball, extract it somewhere, and from the directory you extracted it to, run ./thunderbird and it'll start.
  3. I've found the same, MS hardware (their mouse for example) is quite nice, but I buy Logitech instead just on principle.
  4. Ooooh... cool... I will check that out. :) Thanks!
  5. Ah, yeah. Thanks, I'll try it the next time I reinstall probably :). For now I'm happy with my self-compiled mplayer.
  6. Not the repository. Is the multiverse you're talking about multiverse.org?
  7. You could log in completely as root, but I wouldn't do that, quite dangerous. There's an easier way though, at least with KDE: right-click on desktop, choose Link to Application, in the Application tab, choose command and enter "kdesu konqueror". Then choose an icon that tells you not to touch it lightly :). It'll create a root instance of konqueror where you can delete anything you wish. Be careful!
  8. Well, I took things into my own hands and compiled from source, and it works just great now! Plus, it's probably optimized for my CPU and kernel and was MUCH more fun to install that way :).Thanks for the help.
  9. Where's the multiverse one? I've tried mozilla-mplayer, but it 1. Can't play real video, 2. doesn't have full screen and config and such. Anyone have any idea why I'd have to re-delete those files each time? Maybe I'll just build from source.
  10. Sweetness :) Does anyone know of an ergonomic Linux keyboard?
  11. Distro is Debian Sarge. Installed mplayer from the marillat repository fine and it works great. The issue is with mplayer plugin. I used alien to convert an FC3 (4? don't remember) for the plugin and copied it to ~/.mozilla/plugins. If I delete my xpti.dat and pluginreg.dat it plays fine, but if I restart firefox it doesn't play again till I delete those files once again, however, about:plugins lists them. I have checked and the permissions seem okay (all are owned by my user and are executable). So, two questions: 1. Any ideas on fixing this, or 2. Any better place to get mplayer from so it will work better? P.S. This is a reinstall, it worked fine before, but I may have used a different package to alien-convert. Thanks! 12. A bit late, but I'm here, through google and through talk, aomightyATgmailDOTcom.
  13. I just did something pretty cool the other day. I've always wondered that even though I no longer use Windows, I use the Windows key all the time to access the K Menu. I had a thought... how about a Tux key! Obviously it would be great if they'd manufacture keyboards with them :P but since that's not gonna happen anytime soon I made my own, printed them out (highest-quality since it's low-res) and taped them over my Windows keys! It works great. I don't have a digital camera to give you a screenshot, but I attached the image I used if you want to try it. :D
  14. Yes, but for a long time (and I'll bet many people thought this) I installed stuff with rpm -iv rather than urpmi, which wasn't good for system continuity. Even if you download an RPM, use urpmi [packagename].
  15. Many time you use neither. Almost always (at least for me), the package I need is in urpmi. Go to the easy-urpmi link at the top of the site to set it up (you'll need the internet though. Go to the Mandrake Control Center (Kmenu->System->Configure your computer I believe), and go into the network section, there you can select a driver to use. There's a good chance Mandrake already has a driver for your particular hardware.
  16. Yeah, I had stuff backed up, so I was ok. It fixed that wierd xdm problem I'd been having lol. Actually, my plan with copying would have worked quite fine, if it weren't for the misstyped command. I forgot to type rm -rf /mnt/sda5 and instead typed rm -rf / :). Also, if I had mounted the partition readonly I would have been fine too.
  17. Ok, I may try that, but for now I'll just use Kaffeine. Thanks. What I don't understand is since it worked last time, shouldn't it work this time too? (last time was Debian as well)
  18. As you might have read, I had to reinstall, and this time, I can't play DVDs with ogle, and I'm guessing I didn't install something I need. I have libdvdcss2, libdvdread, libdvdnav, libdvdplay, all the ogle requirements, also ogle-mmx (Debian Sarge remember). Anyway, when playing dvds (encrypted, haven't yet tried with unencrypted ones), I get the following output: libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access libdvdread: Attempting to retrieve all CSS keys libdvdread: This can take a _long_ time, please be patient libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB at 0x0000013f libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_0.VOB at 0x00000470 libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB at 0x0000fbaa libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_02_0.VOB at 0x0024392a libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_02_1.VOB at 0x00243974 libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_0.VOB at 0x002445ba libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_1.VOB at 0x0024572a libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_04_0.VOB at 0x0026cd50 libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_04_1.VOB at 0x0026d72e libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_05_0.VOB at 0x0031ba06 libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_05_1.VOB at 0x0031de72 libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Found 5 VTS's libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 Xscreensaver not running. No accelerated IMDCT transform found ctrl: ipc_rmid: Invalid argument What is an IMDCT transform and what am I missing? Also, the last time I tried (before I turned off my computer and maybe changed a few packages), I got sound but no video. Mplayer works playing videos (but not DVDs). DMA is turned on, and this happens as root or normal user. What am I missing? Thanks all. UPDATE: Dvds work great with Kaffeine. I guess I can just use that for the moment, but I'd love to know why it won't work with ogle. [moved from Software by spinynorman] [added "Debian" info to title - arctic]
  19. Well, while I was messing around, I accidentally did an rm -rf / through Knoppix (forgot to chroot first, just trying to delete a different partition), and, though my /home directory is still intact, I lost my /var and /etc directory. I guess I'll be reinstalling now... :(. This sucks.
  20. Yeah, I did that kind of thing once with a FAT32 partition for exchanging data between XP and Mandrake, and both recognized them. I'm pretty sure the Mandrake CD can format FAT32.
  21. Cleaned the cache, and for the moment I'm okay, but I'd still like to repartition, as Debian as 15GB allocated and I have about 45GB free space :). Could I make an ext3 partition of, say 16GB (just enough to hold it) and copy the entire Debian system onto it, then resize to 45GB?
  22. Ok, so here' s my problem. Recently I switched to Debian from Mandrake (I have nothing against Mandrake lol, just wanted to try another distro). Anway, I'm running out of space on my Debian partition, so I deleted my Mandrake partition to give me more room for Debian. The df command now gives this output: In order, it goes Windows (sda1), swap (sda5), Debian (sda6). Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda6 15741824 14059444 1362568 92% / tmpfs 257508 0 257508 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 20514968 16808852 3706116 82% /mnt/windows Since the Debian partition starts AFTER the free space, when I attempt to resize it with Mandrake CD 1, it won't let me resize. So the question is, how can I make the Debian partition (sda6) start at a different sector so it can resize? Thanks. [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  23. That's almost easier than Windows! Nice...
