    nVidia or ATI?

I started out using an ATI card (Rage 128), but IIRC it was buggy when running MDK 8.1 and it just didn't look/feel right. So I bought an nVidia GF2 MX400 PCI card and haven't had any probs with it; not counting the times "I" screwed up something when updating the drivers. But, I will say that from what I seen on nVidia's Lin BB the latest driver, 5328, is a pain-in-the-xxx, especially for people with AGP cards. I like trying to keep up with the latest drivers but passed on this one because of the hassles people are/were having. Altho I understand that there are 2 sites that have a patch for the problems I think that if I gotta go elsewhere to download a patch then why should I. I mean nVidia should have looked into this better before releasing it as "good". Either they are slipping or they are just trying too hard to keep the Linux gamers happy. As it is I will stick with nVidia. I would like to get an Asylum 256 meg AGP vid card but to be safe I will wait awhile in hopes that MDK and nVidia get their acts together and get the AGP stuff to work better. As I recall there are issues with MDK and AGP as well. I do my da**dest to make sure the hardware I install on my comp is Linux friendly. As it is right now I have an older Tyan mobo and am upgrading a little bit to a slightly newer Tyan board. A board that will take an AMD Athlon XP 1700+. Also, I am a 1 OS on the HDD type. If I gotta look at windows I'll go visit the kids or use my wife's comp. I don't hate it, but since moving to Linux 3 years ago I am still quite content with it. IT AIN'T BORING LIKE MS. Later, Dudes and Dudettes. Pepse.

    VCD problem.

I just bought a music CD this past weekend and it comes with a video on it and of course it won't play in Xine or Mplayer; altho Mplayer at least gives a really psychedelic screen. Anyway after looking at the slip of paper that comes with the CD I noticed a Apple Quicktime logo at the bottom. I also seem to recall on this board or another that Apple doesn't port to Linux. So, is there something else out there that will allow me to see the video?? It's not really important, but if it can be done it will keep the wolves away. Later. Pepse.
  3. OK, I am not sure what the problem is but I have been having a bad time with the CD burning programs in 9.1. Over the weekend I have tried to burn an audio CD and it is taking HOURS to burn. It is a standard 50+ minute audio CD, with 12 tracks. Well after 4+ hours it is only to track 6. This is using XCDroast. I removed K3B because it badly conflicts with XCDroast and K3B just doen't want to work right with audio CD's. Data CD's and Pix are fine, but there are other things I can use for those 2 items. Being that I have 9.1 PowerPack I have installed most everything I can think of for CD burning. CDRDAO, CDRTAO, etc., etc. The burner is an LG 24X10X40. I have a Pentium 3 CPU 600mhz, 572 megs of SDRAM. The burner is on secondary master. I have an LG 16X DVDrom/40X CDrom on primary slave. Any ideas why it is so slow?? Later. Pepse.
  4. OK, first of all I tried to do a search on this Forum for K3B and remove K3B, and got an error of (1) less than 4 digits, and (2) something like maybe I don't know how to use "search". OK, fine, I'll post the situation. Being that you (or is it just me) can't copy audio CD's in K3b I am thinking about upgrading from 0.8.1-3mdk to 0.10.x in hopes that with the upgrade I will be able to copy audio cd's. And just so you know in K3B I am suppose to drag and drop the files from the read ROM to the center area and the files won't drop after I drag. But I have no problems copying data cd's or pictures from my PIX folder. Of course I don't have much luck with trying to copy audio cd's with XCDroast, either. Apparently copying audio CD's in Linux is something they haven't figured out legally how to do. Anyway, my main point is I want to upgrade to the K3B in hopes it might have audio copying capabilities, so do I remove the 0.8.1 rpm before I download/install the new 0.10?? Or doesn't it matter?? Pepse. I have MDK 9.1, and a LG CDR/RW and a LG DVD reader/CDROM.
  5. Gowator, I did " ls -l /dev/cdrom " and it shows " /dev/cdrom -> cdroms/cdrom0 " and "/dev/dvd and /dev/hdb" both show the " ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/cd . Also, I was going to post that the link Alaa gave didn't work but I did it again and it worked. My error because after the "pipe" I put "grp" instead of "gpg" . Being that I did it the right way I got the key. Another thing tho, I think it was Tues. or Wed. I went to MCC-RPMDRAKE and searched for all related things to Xine and proceeded to install everything in which case it eneded up taking me to the PLF site and after all the time it took downloading it came back with an error about the key or something. Now that I got the key I should be OK. I mentioned this because I am wondering if it wise to download everthing related to Xine or am I wasting my time? I have plenty of room on my hda1, so it is a question of is it worth the time to add everthing in hopes something gets it so my Xine works?? Oh, I have MDK 9.1 PowerPack. Later. Pepse.
  6. Gowator, I went to the Xine setup and went to Input and changed the "device used for dvd drive" from /dev/dvd to /dev/cdrom as well as /dev/hdb and it still acts the same. In MCC hardware my DVD player is listed as /dev/hdb (old device file) and /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/cd (new devfs device); should I try that?? It is a LG DVD player and CDrom reader. One thing tho, when I had 9.0 and went to Xine I had a toggle for D5D and D4D ( I downloaded and installed both) whereas now it just shows DVD, DVB, VCD and CD. You see with 9.1 I don't know if it should show D5D or DVD. alaa, I will try that later on Tues. I'm in CST US. Also, when trying to (s) locate either D5D or libdvdcss2 ( in root) I get an error of something about my slocate.db is more than 8 days old. I never had any problems with slocate with 9.0. Later. Pepse.
  7. Ok, so I went to Software Sources manager an was able to add the mubplf source. Then I went back to the plf site and downloaded D5D and the reply was that it is already installed (yeah right). Well then I downloaded libdvdcss2 and of course after it downloaded I got the bad signature error. I thought "OK I'll try the MPlayer file"; same result, bad signature file. So, then I went back to page one and did the rpmrebuild. It did. So, (ask I stupidly ask) now what?? Being that it said the D5D was already installed I went and tried a movie again and it still isn't working. Same prob I mentioned at the start of this mess. Pepse.
  8. That wasn't a good idea. I did "urpmi.removemedia plf " and it removed the mubplf . So, I went back and tried to re-install mubplf from the info from bvc and the screen I get seems to be an info screen as it gives me choices that if I type in --wget or --limit rate , etc., etc., and at the bottom it says " 'with' missing for ftp media . That makes twice I tried to re-install it and it comes back with the same error. I don't know. Later. Pepse.
  9. bvc, What?? How/where do I do that (remove plf and replace it with mubplf)?? Chances are I might feel stoopid with your answer but I gotta ask. Pepse.
  10. I'm back. Anyway I think the MUBPLF link worked. I have not tried anything because I want to make sure that the results of what I put into the system is right. Okay, I typed in bvc's first link and the answer is (this is at the bottom of the page after it does the examining synthesis file bit): Retrieving description file of "mubplf"... Retieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "mubplf"... ftp://213.232.94.69/pub/PLF/mandrake/9.1/hdlist.cz ...retrieving done examining MD5SUM file examining hdlist file [var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.mubplf.cz writing list/file for medium "mubplf" Found 0 headers in cache removing 0 obsolete headers in cache write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.config] Then I'm back at root. True this seems to tell me that what I did worked but I decided to post before I get happy and go to PLf and something ain't right. Later. Pepse.
  11. Xamusk, didn't see your reply as I went to this forum thru a different door. The problem I am having has to do with not being able to download anything from PLF. If I get that far I plan to try MPlayer, also. As you can see by my problem above I can't get there from here. Later. Pepse.
  12. EASY URPMI???? Sorry but it isn't working. I have been doing what should be necessary to load easy urpmi but I keep getting errors. I have tried different mirrors on PLF when trying to set up this easy urpmi. The 3rd step in PLFs page is where I am suppose to go to root and type in " urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/mandrake/9.1 with hdlist.cz . Well, I keep getting the same error no matter which mirror I use: added medium plf examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation CD1 (x86) (cdrom1) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation CD2 (x86) (cdrom2) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.International CD (x86) (cdrom3) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.International CD (x86) (cdrom4) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Commercial Apps CD (x86) (cdrom5) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Commercial Apps CD (x86) (cdrom6) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Supplimentary applications CD (x86) (cdrom7) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Supplimentary applications CD (x86) (cdrom8) .cz] examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation sources CD1(cdrom9) .cz] retrieving description file of "plf"... retieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "plf"... ftp://knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/mandrake/9.1/hdlist.cz ...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 13 or signal 0 retrieve of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "plf" examining synthesis file [var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "plf" unable to update medium "plf" So, like I said I've done this with 5 different mirrors; 3 US mirrors and 1 Poland and 1 France and I keep getting the same error. Any ideas?? Pepse.
  13. Well, now it appears that I have a problem with the PLF. I went there thru my Mozilla browser and when ever I went to a mirror (tried 4 diff ones) and when I went to one of the rpm's I needed I just got a black page. I have flash and Java running so I don't know what the error was about. SO then for the heck of it I went thru Konqueror and I was able to go to a mirror and be able to download what I needed ( I am impressed with Konq's auto RPM download or save feature), but each time it downloaded it came up with an error of: Bad Signature /home/pepse/.kde/share/apps/kfmexec/2945.0.xine-d4d-0.2.7-2plf.i586.rpm . I cancelled because I figured it means it won't work. I tried 4 diff mirrors and got the same results; also tried diff Xine stuff I needed but had the same problem. Any ideas?? Pepse.
  14. I have installed the supplied Xine and it is working no different than before I installed it. That is, I have 9.1 PowerPack and I installed everything pertaining to Xine that I should need and no different. My unit is an LG DVD/CDROM reader. After reading your reply before I went to work I realized that with 9.0 I had D4D and D5D that I installed from the Penguin Liberation Front. Went there and after some searching I found they still have those files that I would need for 9.1. So, now my question is "do I remove the xine-lib-1-rc1.tar.gz before I download and open the D4D and D5D rpms?" I should have went to PLF before I posted and downloaded and installed their rpms first. It's just that I thought 9.1PowerPack would have the necessary software for DVD playback. Sorry to bother. Later. Pepse.
  15. I will try Galeon and see what happens, but not now it's time for sleep. Also, as for mail, I have noticed a fair amount of debating between evo and Kmail. I would look into Kmail simply because of all my years with whine-doze I never used outlook; always been a Netscape person. It sounds like Kmail would be similar to what I use. I will post back as soon as I try your suggestion. Thanx. Pepse.
  16. I know I didn't have this much of a problem with 9.0. First I tried Xine because that is what worked in 9.0. I went to the Xine homepage and downloaded " xine-lib-1-rc1.tar.gz" and untarred it and all the usual stuff and I still have the problem of when I load Xine, click on DVD and it recognizes the DVD, and then I click play, and it gives me the fbi warning and then the "New Line Cinema" logo then it shuts down to the Xine screen; like I didn't do anything. I had this problem before I installed xine-lib-1-rc1 and after. I even went to the software manager and downloaded all relevent software pertaining to Xine. And then being that I have 9.1 PowerPack I installed MPlayer and the dialog box states "no media opened". I never used MPlayer before but after doing a search on this board and finding a reference to MPlayer I loaded the software and hoped for the best; no luck. Any idea as what to do next?? The DVD I am using I had working in 9.0. Plus I have tried 3 other DVDs to no avail. Later. Pepse.
  17. Ok, I am running MDK 9.1with the default? Mozilla 1.3 and I have been getting an annoying problem of not being able to type into search boxes, or on Ebay not being able to type in a price, unless I totally get off the 'net and redo my connection and Mozilla. RELOAD doesn't help. And as for search boxes that includes this site. Is this a common problem with newer Mozilla releases or just 1.3?? It's reminding me of running Netscape when I was on whine-doze and MDK 8.1; the newer the release the crappier it got. I use Mozilla because it has Netscape email and the last time I checked with Opera you used their "Operamail". And of course Galeon, Konqueror, and Quanta don't have email capabilities. And I am sure it is the browser as I have the same machine that I started runnung Linux with for almost 2 years. Tyan mobo, 576 megs of ram, P III processor at 600mhz, an nVidia GeForce 2 MX400 64 meg PCI vid card with the latest software update "4496". Of course it could be MDK 9.1, because with this release it is just kinda flakey. Doesn't feel as stable as 9.0 or 8.1. Later. Pepse.
  18. Been there and did that, too. If I get time I'll check out the JustLinux board and see about posting this info/link there. Hey we gotta cover all possible bases in the Linux world in order for MacroMedia to get enough submissions to hopefully port Shockwave for our Linux boxes. Later. Pepse.
  19. I can say that LG/Goldstar are Linux compatible; says so on the box. I bought it specifically for that reason. I have had it for almost 2 years and have been satisfied with it. My opinion. Pepse.
  20. :) :? Well, I got kppp running but I didn't find nothing relevent in the package manager but I went to the "run command" and typed in kppp and my dial-up box showed up and I clicked connect and it did. I tried it several times and it kept working and then I noticed that in Networking-remote access a couple items for kppp showed up there, too. Strange this is reminding me of (I hate to say it) windows. Don't know why the heck it works but it does. Well, now I gotta do some searching to find out why my my DVDrom/cdrom won't play music but does read my Linux format CD's, and to find out if MDK 9.1/Mozilla has flash preinstalled or if I gotta download it again. And who knows many other issues I might encounter. As always Thanks for the help. Later. Pepse.
  21. Where do I find KPPP?? I looked in /etc and root and found nothing. I even looked at package selection, nothing. Not even in start applications networking. I must be missing something here. Pepse.
  22. OK, I went to /etc and thru mc and went past the directories and there is no reference to ppp/options, but in the resolv.conf the page is blank. So, anyway I scrolled up to the directories and found "ppp" looked in and this is what's there: /peers ppp0 chap secrects *ip-down *ip-down.ipv6to4 *ip-up *ip-up.ipv6to4 *ipv6-down *ipv6-up options (F3'd to see what's in it and it shows "Lock no auth noipdefault use peerdns ) pap-secrets (F3'd it and it shows my internet login name and ppp0 and my internet password) resolv.conf (F3'd it and it shows the name server with the numerical address ) Later. Pepse.
  23. There might be another problem as I did what Genm mentioned and then went to net_monitor and it still wouldn't connect. On the Konsole screen it showed an error of: Glib-critical **: File gmain.c: Line 500 (g_source_remove): assertion 'tag 7 0 failed. SIOCDELRT: No such process. Failed to activate ppp0 with error 2. So, then I went to mc /etc and the resolve.conf is there. Actually 2 of them. One I had just created and the other was created on 10-01. The one created on 10-02 also had a line stating resolve.conf.save. Since I don't have anything important on the big hdd do you think I should just format the drive and start over?? When I did the Google/Linux search the one thing I had noticed was that 2 people had mentioned about installing Linux using the Standard Security and wondered if that might be causing the problem. One of the people had this problem after installing RH 7.3. Just a thought. Pepse. Oh yeah, I did also try the internet Wizard in MCC; no luck.
  24. Shoot, I forgot to ask "where do I look for resolv.conf??" in case it does exist?? Getting dumber by the minute. Pepse.
