  1. OK, as I write this I am also looking at KDE system guard and I really don't know what/which to "kill ? " I assume you mean to "kill" kded? Or .....................?? As for ending up with a static icon, that is fine with me as long as my camera works. Also, as for this problem, do I "kill" kded and whatever else now or when I plug in the camera to download pix? Also, I did online Mandrake updates, so obviously it didn't do my system any good either. Come to think of it is it possible that qt3 is messing up when I boot up the computer as I cannot have my USB mouse and USB hub connected at the same time as it always locks up when it gets to my HP USB printer? I had to put a PS2 adapter on my mouse in order to not have to remember to disconnect/connect my hub. My hub has my camera plug (only connected to my camera when needed), my Epson USB scanner and my HP USB printer. It locks up whether I have the mouse plugged into the back of the compter or the hub. Later. Pepse.
  2. Well, just for the heck of it I decided to see if I would have the same problems with the camera in Gnome. NO! Everything is fine in Gnome. When I plug in the camera I get an icon for it somewhat like I did in MDK 9.1PP. Everything works just great in Gnome. I had always wanted to switch to Gnome but the icons for some things are just BLAH, and there is no desktop wallpaper. And there might have been a couple other minor things I can't think of. Another thing strange when I was in Gnome I went on the 'net and went to this website and this post of mine dosen't exist, but another one I started the same day does, and as near as I can tell all other posts I have made or commented on do exist when I did a search for me...... er Pepse. Not only that the search bar is at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top like it is now. Strange. So, anyway, my problem is KDE 3.2.x. And I have done Mandrake updates recently and that obviously didn't cure any problems with KDE. Later. Pepse.
  3. I am not sure if I did what you asked, correctly. But, I went to Konsole and opened midnight commander and saved it in a folder in /home/jim (AKA Konqueror). I could still access /home/jim and look at what I saved there. But, when I hooked up my digi camera I could no longer access /home/jim. But as I was answering this I did some checking and I can go to /home/jim/dcim/104hp620 , and type " ls " and get a list of the .jpg files in it. Of course the .jpg files are in green and I can't access them unless I can get a command to use in Konsole to access them. But then that doesn't cure the problem. Later. Pepse.
  4. I do use KDE, but I found nothing in the Process Table pertaing to URPMI, so I went to a Konsole and I didn't find nothing there either pertaining to URPMI. Since I've never been to these places maybe I am supposed to be looking for something else that indirectly pertains to URPMI? And altho these 2 places peak my interest what exactly are they for? As for a faster internet I am still bugging my wife into getting DSL. She is warming to the idea, but I will have to bring it up this weekend, again. Later. Pepse.
  5. Being that I have dial-up modem and am limited to the amount of time to block the regular phoneline I have been doing things rather slowly. First to mention that I have been having some problems with the easy urpmi sites. The ones in the US are not good. Especially Wisconsin (where I am from). Anyway I went with some other sites and was able to download the first 3 packages; but Wednesday I went to download the "urpmi.addmedia main ftp://anorien.csc.ac.uk /xxxxxxxxxxxx......" and it was one that would have taken at least an hour-and-a-half and after 35 minutes I had to disconnect so as to leave for work. Anyway, today I had a little more time to try and download from where I left off and got an error of "urpmi database locked". I tried 2 other Euro sites and got the same "urpmi database locked". I also tried to download the next package after "main" and got the same "urpmi database locked". Now is it because I premeturly quit downloading on the one site Wednesday or is it just one of those things that sometimes happens? If I messed it up how do I undo it?? Later. Pepse.
  6. Just to let you s know I will try load what is needed for URPMI, Tue morning or late Tuesday night. Pepse.
  7. As for accessing files while in Konsole, I guess I don't know how since everything in /home/jim is in blue writing except for a small avi file (in green), and the PLF pubkey (in white). Of course all I did to get those files was to type " ls". But I am able to access Konqueror while in Konsole and it loads up with no errors. Later. Pepse.
  8. So, if I understand this right you people are saying that as long as I download from a site such as PLF or Mandrake/Mandriva I can pretty much igore those errors? That the missing signature won't prevent me from accessing or viewing what I download?? Devries, tell me what to due to setup URPMI to due my downloading. Isn't URPMI what activates when I download an RPM and doubleclick on it and it asks me about what to do, such as install or save to? ?? Maybe I'm missing something here. Later. Pepse.
  9. As for an Icon remaining on my desktop, that's fine. But, because I have so-o-o many problems with this 10.1powerpack the Icon looks nice but I can't access /home/jim when trying to upload the pics. The problem I have with Konquerer-/home/jim is I can go to the HOME icon and go in and view whatever is in there but if I access anything else that will take me to /home/jim, like CDROM or the Konquerer web browser or (now) the camera icon I cannot get in to home. I click on the Home icon and all I get is the hourglass spinning next to the "starting Home/jim". If I reboot the computer then I can go to /home/jim . I imagine if we figure this " home " problem then maybe I will get an icon on the desktop only when connecting the camera. Later. Pepse.
  10. OK, I researched this one on the board before posting. I am trying to get my DVD player to work in 10.1 PowerPack. Through a link provided by Steve S., I downloaded the GPG keys from zarb.plf.org and then downloaded " libdvdcss2-1.2.8-1plf.i586.rpm . So, I went to install it and got an Invalid Signature; which states: /home /jim/RPM/libdvdcss2-1.2.8-1plf.i586.rpm: Invalid Signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#caba22ae NOT OK) . I have 3 other DVD related items I need to install but I will wait and see what this problem is first. Then too, I can't tell you what ones I also have in a folder in "home" because whenever I use konsole I cannot go to "home" unless I reboot the computer. Later. Pepse.
  11. Ok I researched this for awhile on this board as to why my HP 620 digital camera won't work. I still have no clue. It is recognized in MCC hardware and in MCC mount points as sdb1 and I was able to /mnt/camera in a konsole and there it is. But there is no icon on the desktop when I turn it on. I also, changed the USB cable from the "powered hub" to the back of the computer; still nothing. It is not recognized in The Gimpv2 or Digcam or in "configuration-KDE-peripherals-Digital camera". It seems to be evrywhere but the desktop. I updated evrything in MCC-software-updates as well as updated urpmi. This is driving me crazy . There are so many bugs in this version that it's hard to pick a topic to start. My digital camera is a good starting point, I guess. Oh, my USB scanner and USB printer and USB mouse all work fine. One more item: why don't the Kmix settings stay in file after shutting down or rebooting? Later. Pepse. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  12. As for the hard drive now that I've been using it a little more it seems to be staying somewhat cool. I think some of my problems were because I started with a brand new hard drive. It might be like with Win were when you get a new hard drive you gotta fdisk and format it. But whatever it was that ain't all my problems with 10.1PP. Because of the various issues I am having I am back on my old 30Gig western digital with 9.1PP; even though I messed up the USB part of the OS I can still run it and use my digital camera and don't have things screwing up, like Mozilla Mail. So far my impression of 10.1PP is not good. Too many things are buggy. I will probably have a few posts on the issues I am having so far with 10.1. Although I will try to trouble shoot through whatever means I can before posting. I do hope I can get 10.1 to work like 9.1 did when I first got it. As for 10.2?? If it is as problematic as 10.1, I will pass on it. Maybe the first Mandriva OS will be more stable; I hope. Later. Pepse. I tried to post this Tuesday night but I wasn't able to spell check or preview post or Add reply.
  13. Well, over the last 3 weeks I have upgraded my system. Was a Tyan mobo with AMD 1.33 Ghz CPU and 512 Mgs SDram and an old WD 30Ghz hard drive and MDK 9.1 PowerPak. Now I have a Gigabyte 7VM400M-RZ mobo, same ol' AMD 1.33 CPU, 512 megs of DDR 400 Ram, and a new Maxtor 120 Gig hard drive. Oh, yeah, MDK 10.0 PowerPak and MDK 10.1 PowerPak DVD's. Got the new HDD Tues. and was going to put 10.1 PP on it but after I got past the "install packages" I had some sot of error about X11.org (can't find the piece of paper that I wrote it on) and decided that maybe I would be better off installing 10.0PP. As a side note here I will say that I have installed both 10 and 10.1 on an old Maxtor 8.4 Gig HDD and had no problems. Now that I get a 120 Gig Maxtor problems are arising. OK, so I installed (and reformatted the HDD) 10.0PP and when it got to my desktop (KDE) the first thing I wanted to do was to put a link to (what used to be) Mandrake Control Center. And then when going there you gotta say language and then what country and then it says to log out before the changes take place. So, I did.......5 times and it won't let me in any farther than "language and country and logout". I rebooted, ended session, and shutdown. Doesn't matter it won't let me into MCC. I mainly needed to go there to get my dial-up internet connection going. Well, I figured that maybe if I upgraded to 10.1PP I might be OK. Well first of all after removing the DVD and rebooting it hangs up when it gets to my HP 7260 USB printer; so I reboot the computer with the printer off and it is OK. Then of course when in KDE I still have the same issue with MCC. And to top it off in the sys tray where it has the internet connection it wants to connect through my onboard LAN which I disabled in BIOS. Now as a comparrison I didn't have any of these issues when putting either 10.0PP or 10.1PP on that old 8.4Gig hdd. Any ideas?? Should I stick with 9.1PowerPak and try to upgrade certain parts? Or.......??? Oh is it normal for the 120 Gig hard drive to get quite warm after 10 hours of running? Later. Pepse. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  14. aRTee, yeah, that is the nice thing about the computer/electronics world; expensive as hell today and tomorrow they just might beg you to buy it, cheap. . And one reason they would be selling it cheap is because somebody probably has a "newer and more improved" item. And I don't know why I didn't think at first about firmware upgrading that for Linux it would more than likely be a third party patch. And more than likely I will go with NEC or Lite-On. As for the companies I e-mailed recently about firmware upgrading only Lite-On e-mailed me back in less than a week after I e-mailed them. And then when I mentioned about staying with Linux they replied that all I need to do is put the DVD burner in a windoze computer and update the firmware and then put it back in my Linux computer and go. That is why I put Lite-On as a second choice. They at least are very good with answering their e-mails in a timely manner. Oh, I emailed HP, Lite-On, Advance Micro and BenQ. As for the different standards I agree that it is good for us as there is competition between the companies and that helps with the price. Funny thing tho, I remember awhile back when the various companies had their ideas as to what should be the format of choice it was said that there should be just one standard. So, I was surprised to see more than one. Somebody had enough brains, I guess, to see that what we have is good for us. And yes when I do purchase one it will be the dual standard +-r & +-rw. Later. Pepse.
  15. adamw, yea, my LG CDRW is about 3 years old, whereas the Lite-On DVD ROM is about 6 months old. Dragon Mage, I know I've heard of BenQ, and IIRC the quality is good to very good. If anything it is another company to check and see how, or if, they have any LInux support. And, I am beginning to think that having a dual layer DVD burner is along the lines of "Mine is bigger than yours", or "My 80X CDROM is better than your 77X CDROM". Just something new and cutting edge to get the hardcore "I gotta have it before my friends/neighbor/brother/dad/etc. gets it" . Later. Pepse.
  16. First thing to mention is that I haven't received emails regarding additional posts to my topic since aRTee's first reply. Common problem. Now on to the situation. aRTee, are you from the US?? I went to NEC's website and found nothing pertaining to Linux, especially in dealing with firmware upgrades. But, after reading the other replies it sounds like there are 3rd party vendors for firmware updates. I do not have a dual boot system, but I do have another hard drive with windoze on it. adamw, what I find interesting is that I have an LG CDRW and a Lite-On DVD ROM and the LG is very quiet when burning, but the Lite-On is noisy when loading a CD or DVD, and a bit noisy when running. And before the Lite-On I had an LG DVD ROM and it was as quiet as the LG burner. In reference to Phillips products, I haven't heard much good about them from some windoze users. Seems thy are poor quality and troublesome. I did email Lite-On, HP, and NEC in regards to firmware and so far Lite-On replied and stated I should use windoze as their firmware upgrades are excellent for windoze. I kindly emailed them back and stated that I will stick with Linux and that I will probably find at least one company that supports Linux. I have thought about looking in to Plextor, also. Later. Pepse.
  17. Glad you pointed that out, about the media. Yeah, I believe the media changes about as fast as computers. As for the 3 I mention, I would think HP might/would have firmware updates for Linux. I will look into that aspect of which DVD burner is more Linux compatible. As for the choice of NEC, for the few places I have to look at I don't think any have NEC (that is within 60 miles of home). But if need be I could always get one through pricewatch.com . Never bought anything there but I have always used it as a gauge to value new computer parts And I always TRY to get hardware that is Linux friendly. Thanx for the tip. I tend to sometimes look at price before compatibility. That's a lingerling effect from windoze. Hardware, like the OS requires no brains. Just buy it and run it  Later. Pepe.
  18. Okay, I am about to buy a DVD burner for my Linux box and as for the 2 mentioned (HP & Micro Advantage) which one would be better? Quality-wise?? For what it is worth, also, they are both "dual layer", but the HP is 8X 4X ?X and the M/A is 16X 8X 48X. Speed is not really an issue. They are both the same price. Come to think of it there is a place that has an Aopen for the same price but, I don't remember the speeds. All 3 are +/- RW, +/- R. For what it's worth the M/A is sold through Office Max. Later. Pepse.
  19. I have been using a 5610 for nigh on 5 years and that dates back to Mandrake 8.1and never had any issues with it. WOW, I just realized that around the first week of March will be 5 years of using Linux . Gee, and I'm still not a true geek yet . Pepse.
  20. I think it is an extremely good topic. In fact I wish Eric Raymonds article could be something like a READ THIS BEFORE YOU ASK ANYTHING BEFORE GOING ANYWHERE ELSE on the list. I am not trying to offend anyone with the large type on that statement, just that is how I think it should be seen when someone is looking for help; you know like "start here first". Later. Pepse.
  21. So, some of the things I install will be OK, and some will have bad keys. I'll deal with it. So, if anything I should go to the Penguin Liberation Front and download their latest libDVD.xxxx files, and then to Mozilla for Thunderbird? Thanx for helping me figure out that I have 10.0 PP. I know I am usually .1 or .2 behind the majoity of users but by the time 10.2 comes out I'll get 10.1 and the bugs should be ironed out in it :D . Later. Pepse.
  22. First thing to say is that I put the DVD in my rom opened it and there is a bit of text that states " pkg-10.0-Official-Powerpack-i586.idx ". So, when I open that text box with Kwrite I get a big list of probably everything on the DVD and what Kernel version it uses such as Kernel 3.7.x, 2.4.x, 2.6.3.7, and so on. There is also a text box with "VERSION". So when clicking on it it states " Mandrake 10.0 Official-Powerpack-i586 20040330. So, it may or may not be; that is this DVD says it should be Powerpack but as far as its been stated I should have Kernel 2.6.3-8. Also, for what it's worth, when I click on the Mandrake folder it shows 5 folders of RPM's, if that matters in figuring this out. Now, if it is OK I will mention that I am having errors when trying to install RPM's from the DVD. I can't install the "ibdvd.xxx " RPM's or Thunderbird RPM. I don't recall the exact error from the libdvd.xxx RPMs but I can say they are similar to the Thunderbird error, which is: Mandrake Packages Bad Signatures: Mozilla-Thunderbird-0.5-12mdk.i586rpm: Invalid signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG# 26752624 NOT OK) Do you want to continue? Of course I canceled. I did load most of the Linux games as well as Pysol games and there was no problem so, I am not sure what these problems are caused from. Later. Pepse.
  23. That is a good idea but of course I can't get there. I went to a konsole and went root and I cd'd to /etc/radhat-release and it says it is not a directory. So I cd'd to /etc/ and did ls and it shows (in lite blue writing) redhat-release@ . So, I know it is there anyway. Being that that didn't work I decided to read what I could when I did a shutdown and reboot and I saw "2.6.3-7". So my guess is that it is the standard edition. Pepse.
  24. OK, let's put it another way. If this is the PowerPack DVD and I went to "add software" what is a piece of software I could type in that would be on the PowerPack DVD and NOT on the Community DVD?? Pepse.
  25. I just got a DVD of Mandrake 10.0 Workstation. The person I got it from claims it is the 10.0 PowerPack DVD. When I installed it on an extra hard drive it comes up as 10.0 Community. The DVD and DVD case say Workstation. So, by my guess it is the standard version. In otherwords if it was on CD-ROMs there would be 3 CD's instead of 6. Am I right or wrong?? Later. Pepse.
