    DVD Player Probs.

Well at least my system knows where the DVD player is. Now I gotta figure out how to correct the error given when trying to run a DVD. The error is: -xine engine error- there is no input plugin available to handle 'dvd://VIDEO_TS.VOB'. maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist . Hey, I'm getting closer, so maybe I'll have it playing later tonite. I'm thinking that the problem might be that encrypted stuff I gotta deal with. I'll look into it later. Right now I gotta work on 2 whine-doze boxes before tomorrow. Later. Pepse.

    DVD Player Probs.

Well, so far I am getting nowhere. I checked out all 3 links and am no closer now than 2 days ago. But these are good links if I can get things going. First off, I went to http://trylinuxsd.com , and it is a fair tutorial. There is no mention of what to do when certain things aren't there or don't work. On page 3 of the tut. it is said to go to MCC and make sure the DVD is in the hardware area; yep mine is and set just like the picture. 2 make sure it is in the /dev directory; nope, mine is NOT there. And there is no mention on how to get it there. So, anyway I continued on to see what else I might be able to do in the meantime. On page 4 it says to "add the contrib package source" by going to a mirror. Well the link takes me to MDKs home page and unless I'm suppose to go to a mirror for downloading MDK 9.0 I have no clue as where to go (I looked around, no luck). So, I tried adding this stuff by cheating a bit and that didn't work. Like trying to add the plf link. So, after getting nowhere with that I looked at the other links; penguin liberation front; didn't have any luck there, and Ogle; no luck there either. With the last 2 I end up in the page with all kinds of usefull rpms. Well I was at that page before and downloaded everthing I needed for Ogle and XINE. Well when try to open these packages it takes me to Kpackage and as an example this is what happens: <ome/ me/ libdvdcss-ogle0-0.3-9plf.i586.rpm; echo RESULT=$? . Then after a moment I get this: rpmdb: read: 0X4006ef74, 4096: input/output error, error: db4 error(5) from dbcursor-> c-get input/output error On the lower left of that page I have these boxes checked: upgrade replace packages and check dependicies . Then it takes me to another Kpackage page and gives a description of everything about that package and I click "install marked" and nothing happens. To be sure I went to XINE and Ogle and nothing changed. Pepse.
  3. Well for now I found another friend with DSL and had him get me another copy of the 3rd CD. Hopefully it works and will tie me over until MDK sends me my set. As for the manual; I read about 1/2 of the one when I got MDK 8.1 this last Feb., but I know I won't need it now. Later. Pepse.
  4. Ok, I bought a LG DVD player for my box and of course ot says it is Linux compatible. No problem there as it shows up in MCC and when I put a DVD in it and click on CDROM it shows me the contents of the DVD. But when going to XINE and trying to play it nothing happens; also tried XMOVIE. Anyway I searched a bit on this site and found what I thought to be the answer. The main thing was/is to go to: ftp://ftp.easynet.fr.plf/9.0/i586/ and download everything pertaining to libdvd and XINE(RPMs). I did and (1) nothing changed, but (2) when I went back to KDE (I'm in Gnome, now) all of the packages I downloaded are all over the desktop. And when I tried to download them into the system I got errors. Any clue as to what to do?? Later. Pepse.
  5. For what it's worth I'm from Wisconsin, US. And when looking at MDKs site for downloading MDK 9.0 there are 2 mirrors in Wisc., that I could use. So, maybe the update site has the same mirrors. As for your little applet, I have a big applet showing me the download/upload status. The only reason I have it is because when I switched to an internal modem my regular internet connection quit working and I use a terminal and net_monitor to connect. I would like to keep that applet but the dialup is noisy and I don't think I can change the volume on it unless I can go elsewhere in root. I will look into your suggestion and see what happens. Thanx. Later. Pepse.
  6. Well at least someone got their distro. I'm still waiting and getting damned frustrated with Mandrake. I pre-ordered 9.0 standard edition back in Oct. and I am still waiting. I got 2 emails from Mark Walker at Mandrakesoft in late Nov., with a story on why I haven't got my distro yet and shoot I'm still waiting. Supposedly it was supposed to be shipped the first week of Dec. I have emailed him as well as called the Pasadena, Cal, office and get no replies. In fact today (12/27) I tried to use the email address given by the computer voice at their office and it just bounces back. I just don't know what to do next. I had a friend download 9.0 back in Nov., and it turns out that the 3 cd is bad. I need stuff from it like gzip and setserial and the 3rd cd is corrupted. I plan on looking for a napster-like place and try to download the 3rd cd so I can get things going again. I have a standard 56K modem. I just picked up a Linux compatible DVD player and figure I'll probably need things from the 3rd cd to get it to work also. Any ideas as how to get ahold of a live voice at Mandrake or at least a real email address?? The email address given to me on the phone was: serviceeu@mandrakestore.com . Later. Pepse.
  7. What about Knoppix or DemoLinux?? At least with them distros you just run them off your cdrom; altho Demolinux can be put on your harddrive if you want. IMO those would be great for people that want to get a good idea of Linux without having to install on your hdd and then to make sure your system will accept everthing on it. And with these distros you need at at least 16 megs of ram, a 2 meg video card and a 4X CDrom. Knoppix, IIRC, needs a pentium system as it uses the latest software from KDE, Gnome and Open Office. DemoLinux can use a 486 processor as it appears to have KDE 2.x.x and Gnome 1.x.x. In the case of both distros it is best to have alot of ram. Knoppix/KDE/Gnome needs at least 128 megs and DemoLinux needs at least 64 megs. DemoLinux mentions the faster the CDrom the better. I have viewed DemoLinux the most because I had no probs in getting it going whereas Knoppix is a bit fussier. Knoppix is available from http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/ . As for DemoLinux go to http://www.demolinux.org . I got my Knoppix thru Ebay and my DemoLinux thru Linux Format magazine, the Dec., 2002 issue. Anyway they are good starter distros and will give friends a good idea of what it's all about. Later. Pepse.
  8. Now there is something that ain't right on my end. Like I said, when I go to MCC then to updates I don't get any choices as to what mirror it uses. It searches for a mirror and (hopefully) udates my requests. If using partimage has to do with saving my updates then it makes sense. Otherwise it doesn't seem necessary to me. I am thinking that some of my probs might be caused by a possible bad copy of MDK 9.0 that a friend downloaded from place on the 'net; like Winmx or similar. I can't use the 3rd CD as I get some kind of error. And I am getting nowhere with Mandrake as to why I haven't received my pre-ordered copy of MDK 9.0. They don't return my calls or emails. Later. Pepse.
  9. Thanx for the link. Now I have another good bookmark. Very good web for anything I need for printing. I appreciate your time for this. Later. Pepse.
  10. I am thinking of buying a HP Photosmart 100 printer, but when looking at HP's web they don't list any support for it for Linux, nor does the MDK Hardware database. But in Mandrake Control Ceneter under adding a new printer it is listed. So, will it work or won't it?? I would like to get it today 12/26, but I would hate to buy it just to have it not work; 40 mile round trip to Wally World and time, money, etc., etc. The Database does list the HP PS 130 and others but they are out of my price at the moment. Later. Pepse.
  11. First of all, why do I want to use partimage?? I mean if I'm going to reformat and install on hda1 then why use partimage?? Everything on hda6 would still be there, right?? No doubt I must be missing something. Is 9.0 that much diff than 8.1?? On 8.1 I reformatted a few times and discovered that if I only did hda1 then everthing on hda6 was still there. Cannonfodder, when you say to "update from a diff source" are you saying that somehow I have a choice in what mirrors I can use?? As it is for now all I see when going to the update page is the update page screen and I get a box that says something like "checking for a mirror" and then it tries to download. Like I said sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. As for anti-virus software I'll look into it if I can determine that my current probs are virus related. Being that Gnome is functioning OK. I "would think" that if I had a virus then I would have similar probs on Gnome as well. True, my probs didn't start until I got some updates, but then with the strange luck I have with many things in life it don't really surprise me that I am having a problem like I am. I wanted to use Gnome in the first place but I have a small issue of not being able to figure out how to get 3rd? party Wallpaper to the Gnome desktop. I was able to do it in KDE, but something seems to be missing in Gnome, or I forgot what I did in KDE. Counterspy, I will look into the info links you provided and at least bookmark them after reading what's what. Later. Pepse.
  12. Gorgor, I haven't done all the updates because (1) I get alot of error from the mirrors that I update from. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. (2) Being that I have a standard modem things tend to be slow. As for trying Clamav, I will look at it as it sounds like they at least have an explanation as how to set it up. Terse comments?? Nah, I didn't think your comments were terse. Happy X-mas, everbody. And for the non christans may you all have a prosperous new year. Later. Pepse.
  13. Just for the record I went to Gnome and everything is OK there; except my internet connection, but that is because I put in an internal full OEM modem. I was using an external modem. So, I would think that if I had a virus is would affect KDE and Gnome. Later. Pepse. Merry X-mas and may you have a prosperous new year.
  14. Counterspy, the reason I wanted to install a virus agent is because I think I might have a virus, because ever since I did some MDK updates things ain't right on my box. Such as I can't access my cdroms and floppy because of CVS. It gives me an error of: CERVISIA Not a CVS directory . And also, because some of my icons in the lower left by the "K" start app button aren't working either; such as terminal & home.desktop & networking/www/konqbrowser.desktop & .hidden.Documentation.desktop & Applications/editors/kwrite.desktop . All these show the KDE wheel and when clicking on them I get and error of: Could Not Find Service etc., etc. So, on the one hand these problems started after downloading MDK 9.0 updates and also, I guess I got slightly paranoid after reading some things in the Linux Format, UK mag. Mainly that the included cdroms are suppose to be virus free but ya never know. And the Kapersky Virus agent I downloaded is a 30 day trial. So, since my problems are from downloading updates I originally figured something there is causing my probs, but I don't know how to correct them outside of redoing MDK 9.0, which wouldn't be a problem but, the guy that got me the copies off the net ended up with the 3rd CD as bad. Altho I don't think I needed the 3rd one on initial load I can't remember. He didn't get them from MDk's web/mirror. And I am still waiting for my copies from MDK that I pre-ordered the first week of Nov. Also, my computer is Linux only, no whine-doze. Later. Pepse.
  15. Ok, I downloaded Kapersky anti virus and would like to run it but I am clueless as how to get is installed on my system. Nothing helpful on their homepage and I downloaded the 30 day trial vers. It is a tgz file. I have MDK 9.0. Later. Pepse.
