  1. Locate and slocate are in console, right?? If so, when typing in "locate *.pdf" I got quite a few returns (40?) and they started with either "/usr/share/doc/cups/xxxx" or /usr/share/texmf/xxx" . There are a few things in "cups" that ended with "pdf" but of course I can't dbl clik and get any results. Pepse.
  2. I downloaded some tax info and it is in XPDF, but I can't find the specific file (I downloaded several things to XPDF). Is there a way to view all the stuff I have in XPDF? I went to Download Manager and it doesn't seem to show everything I downloaded recently. I downloaded it on 2/18 or 2/19 and it shows 2/15 as the last entry. Later. Pepse.
  3. First of all, qnr, just to let you know cannonfodder and bvc are aware of the hassle I had with trying to install my video drivers. That is why there was mention of that situation. I have tried MESA morph and MESA gears, as well as glxgears (in a console) with success. So, my 3D rendering appears to work. As for the xfishtank I have tried the suggestions given here with no success. As for "xfishtank -help or --help " I get the same results: xfishtank: invalid option -- - usage: xfishtank [-c color] background color [-b limit] number of bubbles (default 32) [-f limit] number of fish (default 10) [-i mult] move interval (default 0.2) [-r rate] move frequency (default 0.2) [-m num] median cut to this many colors [-C num] use only this many color cells [-d] clip fish, swim on root window [-p file] fish swim on picture in file] [host:display] There you have it. I have looked into KDE Background and there is nothing to let me add anything other than what is there; one addition over norm is a jpeg I downloaded from the net that is my current wallpaper. Your move. Later. Pepse.
  4. Well, I went to console and typed "xfishtank --help" and the reply is:" xfishtank: invalid option -- -" . As for video drivers I do have the latest nVidia drivers working (4191); I can do that now, install the vid drivers from "rpm's". So, I know my 3D rendering works. Also, I got "flash" going for the internet. 2 out of 4 items not bad. Anyway I"m getting a little bit smarter. But as for this fishtank your move. Later. Pepse.
  5. Well, before I do that I can say that I decided to reboot the computer just in case that would help. No it didn't but when I clicked the "reboot" and just as KDE was fading out I noticed the fishtank. Near as I can figure it is behind the KDE GUI. So, I will attempt your idea later. It's 3 AM CST, and I gotta get some sleep. Later. Pepse.
  6. Well, I typed in "whereis xfishtank" and the reply is: xfishtank: /usr/X11R6/bin/xfishtank /usr/bin/X11/xfishtank . So I typed in that line and all I can say is that there was a flash in the background and the icon in "console" is in (what I call) a searching state; but nothing happened to my desktop. Pepse.
  7. Well, sadly this mobo has only 2 USB ports and is not expandable on the board. I have my optical mouse on one and my printer on the other. I will just switch my mouse to PS/2 for awhile. Er, hook up my old PS/2 mouse. Ya see, I have seen a couple diff small USB hubs for around $15 to $20 (with or without a power supply) so that is why I was ?ing the matter of brand. I was yold that SIIG would be the most likely hub to use but for what I've seen in my area they run about $35 to $40. Later. Pepse.
  8. Well first of all, while I was waiting for my wife to get done with the 'net on her computer I looked thru some my notes and found a "basis" for tar.gz's and I went to a console and did: tar xvzf xfishtank-2.1tp.tar.gz and it it unpacked but that is about all I can say to that. I had downloaded the file and put it in a directory as to extract it there. I couldn't figure out how to get to the README file so I didn't do anything else. As for the suggestion of: urpmi xfishtank I did that and the reply is: everything already installed . Sure, great, now where is it?? I have looked thru everthing possible in my K menu and can't see anything related to that program. Pepse.
  9. I don't have any more USB ports left on my box. But I have been planning on getting a USB hub. Is Linux particular about brands?? I had thought about getting a card reader but didn't check out the price. I will give HP a call and see if they would kindly let me know what camera models are similar, or at least point me in the direction where I might get a file. Later. Pepse.
  10. OK, I downloaded a tar.gz file but I cannot remember how to do a tar.gz. Where can I find a tutorial for unpacking any tar.gz files?? Later. Pepse.
  11. Oh sure, Google's my homepage and I didn't even think of that. Anyway, the one thing I noticed is that there is a comment about it turning your " Xroot" into an aquarium" .? What exactly would I be doing?? I assume I go to root to run this program. Then it sounds like something for people that don't use a GUI. ????????????? Later. Pepse.
  12. I just went to Gphoto's web and their new GF2 doesn't list the HP 620. Are there any other sites that would have posssibly the right stuff for my camera?? Later. Pepse.
  13. When I recently redid my MDK 9.0, expert install, I was adding various packages to load and one was called "Xfishtank", and the description was something about it being (IIRC) a 3D aquarium possibly for the desktop. But I can't seem to find it. Anyone ever use this?? I am in KDE. Later. Pepse.
  14. I have bought, but haven't taken out of the box, a HP Photosmart 620v digital camera and I am wondering if it will work with my MDK 9.0. I checked into G-Photo and something in KDE configuration and did not see the HP 620 listed in either one. I do have only one use if I can't store pix on my hdd and that's the fact I bought a HP Photosmart printer with the USB port on front for direct copy of pix. But I was hoping I could store/edit on hdd or burn to CDR. Later. Pepse.
  15. What I found out is that when I added a DVD player with 256 megs of ram the video was a little skittish. So, I doubled the ram to 512 and the DVD plays perfect. As for when I was running just the 256 I didn't noticed a drag on the system so I never thought too much about needing more. Altho I do have this thing for maxing out a mobo. I just looked at my -m and it shows a total mem of 504; used 241; free 262. Swap: total 243; used 0; free 243. As far as I know this seems good. At this point I am on the 'net with Mozilla 1.1 and nothing else happening (that I am aware of). Later. Pepse.
  16. Well, I decided to re-install MDK and when I clicked on "upgrade" I ended up with an error of: an error occurred rebuilding of rpm database failed . So, I decided to heck with it and just redid MDK and formatted hda "/". So, ina way everything came back. But for some reason my internet connection won't work. I even went thru MCC and redid the "connection wizard" and it still don't work. So, being that I had this problem before I went to a console and logged in and typed "net_monitor" and here I am. Strange tho, the last time I had this problem was with an external modem and cured the problem by going to an internal "full" modem. Anyway, unless somebody has an idea of this problem I'll just go and reinstall my Xine software and nVidia software and then the one that killed me "Creative SoundBlaster" software and the other things I need to download. Later. Pepse.
  17. :( Gee, that was quick. Well I typed in "chroot /mnt" ( also tried chroot/mnt) and the answer is: could not find kernel image: chroot . Your turn. Pepse.
  18. bvc, I will go with No.1 for now. I realized during my recent hacking "mc" reminds me of an ooooold dos program I had for a 80286 computer called PCTools Deluxe. Also, this stuff reminds me of being in "autoexec.bat" and "config.sys". Basically this is bringing back alot of memories from my dos days so it is a little easier to work with now that I've been hacking it. Anyway, I will stop now so I can get the results from "chroot /mnt" & (hopefully) "modules.conf". Later. Pepse.
  19. OK, I did some testing and this link should get you there: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/sh...&threadid=44768 . I will wait abit to see if you or anyone else that might stumble across this has a clue? Later. Pepse.
  20. First of all unless something changed between 8.1 and 9.0 I realize that I should be able to do a re-install on "/" only, but obviously something went awry when I did it a few weeks ago; I might have missed unchecking "/home" or..........? I just wanted to ask to make sure that the error was mine and not MDK's. As for "Expert", that's all I've ever used when I started with Linux; can't learn much in "Default" mode. I am pretty sure that just re-doing "/" will cure my problem. If intrested I could post a link to another Linux board where I posted. On that board most everything of that Nightmare came back to me. But I've had no replies so I figure it is too deep a problem to cure. Thanx. Later. Pepse.
  21. Well, since nobody has a clue as to how to recover from my problem I figure it would be a good idea to re-do Linux. Unless I did something wrong about 6 weeks ago (I redid Linux and ended up losing everything) is it possible to save everyhting on my "/Home" partition?? I know with MDK 8.1 I was able to but when I did this with 9.0 I lost everyhting. Right now I'm running 9.0 on a little 4.3Gig hdd and would like to get back to the comfort of my 30Gig. Later. Pepse.
  22. OK, I have a LG DVD player and I am running Xine. I have excellent audio thru the speakers but no audio when I plug in the headphones in the front of the unit. I downloaded the Xine D4D and D5D packages. I have switched to D4D, D5D, VCD, DVD and CDA. No sound on any. I do have sound when playing an audio CD w/headphones in XMMS. Any ideas?? Later. Pepse.
  23. Well, after a few days of doing nothing about my prob I decided to get back to it. Strange, now I am in XFree 4.2.1 W/generic nVidia driver. I decided to go back a troubleshoot the prob and set the XFree for 4.2.1 and rebooted and this time it worked. So, with some info I downloaded from dolsons tutorial site for nVidia drivers I decided to see what I have. To shorten this a bit....I went to [root@localhost extensions]# and typed ls libglx* . and the reply is: libglx.so@ libglx.so.1.0.4191 (which is correct) Then I typed: ls -l libglx* and got this reply: lrwxrwxrwx 1root root 18 Jan 28 15:20 libglx.so -> libglx.so.1.0.4191* -rwxr-xr-x 1root root 659340 Jan 28 15:14 libglx.so.1.0.4191* Then I did; modprobe NVdriver and the reply is: modprobe: Can't locate module NVdriver . Hmmmm, I don't know what to do next; but I am getting closer, I think. I did check vim /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions and for the "modules" it shows: Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so . And for driver is has "nvidia" . Oh, and in XFree there is no driver listed for what I installed. Later. Pepse.
  24. OK, that worked. Thanx alot. By the way, does Galeon have mail?? I didn't notice anything in the dropdowns or in preferences. Later. Pepse.
  25. For about the last 3 or 4 days when trying to create a new folder for bookmarks in whatever version of Mozilla came with MDK9.0 I am getting booted out of the internet. I never had this prob before. It just takes me back to my desktop, but the 'net connection is still on. I would try Galeon but I don't know how to transfer bookmarks over, because they are not in my "HOME" area. Don't know if Galeon's any better but it would be worth a shot. This is in KDE. Later. Pepse.
