  1. I have run sane-find-scanner - nothing. I've run scan --list-devices and got the usual " no scanners were found on your system". I tried deleting the entries in dll.conf and mustek_ub.conf, pulling outthe usb cable, rebooting, and sticking the usb back in once I was back to my desktop. Nothing. harddrake reports the Trust scanner on /dev/usb/scanner0 and invites me to configure it manually. Apart from picking scanners at random from the database, I'm at a loss. :( Can you tell me please which driver your scanner is using? Also, Steve you mentioned that yours works "but with a little tweaking". Can you tell me what that consisted of? Finlay
  2. Well, i went out and bought the Mustek. BUT... Harddrake detects it as a Trust Flatscan USB 19200 on /dev/usb/scanner0. First, there is no such file under /dev/usb/ The only entry I have there is lp0. Secondly, since the model it recognizes isn't in the database, I've tried configuring it as Trust Compact Scan USB 19200, Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB, Mustek ScanExpress 12090 USB, 1200CU Plus. None of these work. Of course if I don't have /dev/usb/scanner0 none of them will. Does any one have any ideas? Finlay
  3. Many thanks for your replies. The Mustek sounds like a way to go. I like the pics! Could you please tell me which version of Mandrake you're running, Pzatch? Finlay
  4. I'm afraid I have tried updating SANE snd tweaking dll.conf and umax_pp.conf - all to no avail :( I'm told there is a patch for parallel scanners in the cooker. So maybe I'll just wait... In the meantime I'm interested to hear about the Mustek (Now selling at Safeway in Britain for £35 - $53, Steve Scrimpshire!) It can't be any good at that price, can it? Finlay
  5. My Umax 1220 worked fine under older releases of Mandrake in spite of not being in the supported list. So the support list isn't absolute. And upgrading to the latest version of the OS isn't foolproof either - quite the opposite! Thanks for the replies. Still dodgy about buying new. I'll try the updates first. Many thanks for your help. Finlay
  6. Has anyone used any of the following budget USB scanners with Mandrake 9.0? Mustek 1220 USB Plus Canon Canoscan 646u Canon Canoscan LiDE 20 I have failed to get my Umax parallel scanner to work and I'll buy one of the above if anyone can assure me that it works! However, even at the low prices of these scanners I'm not willing just to take a gamble. Please let me know if you have good reason to believe any of them works. Finlay
  7. Save yourself money at the outset and buy the 3 CD download edition from Linux Emporium. This is what I always do. They cost £2.50 a CD + £1.50 p&p. I don't work for Linux Emporium I just like their cheapness and efficiency. They'll sell you the boxed set too if you want. http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk Finlay
