  1. well maybe disbaling unneeded thing on your main board my help by freeing up interrupts if thats your problem...... anyway it wouldnt hurt to try.

    what i mean is diable stuff oure not using like serial ports that are unused, game port if possible, secondary ide controller if thats unused.

    Also there is a "reset configuration data" thing in some bios , near the "pnp bios installed " option. you could try that. You should probably say no to the latter. i suppose you already have.

    There is also a command line option for the kernel:

    pci=option[,option...]  [PCI] various PCI subsystem options:

      off [iA-32] don't probe for the PCI bus

      bios [iA-32] force use of PCI BIOS, don't access

      the hardware directly. Use this if your machine

      has a non-standard PCI host bridge.

      nobios [iA-32] disallow use of PCI BIOS, only direct

      hardware access methods are allowed. Use this

      if you experience crashes upon bootup and you

      suspect they are caused by the BIOS.

      conf1 [iA-32] Force use of PCI Configuration Mechanism 1.

      conf2 [iA-32] Force use of PCI Configuration Mechanism 2.

      nosort [iA-32] Don't sort PCI devices according to

      order given by the PCI BIOS. This sorting is done

      to get a device order compatible with older kernels.

      biosirq [iA-32] Use PCI BIOS calls to get the interrupt

      routing table. These calls are known to be buggy

      on several machines and they hang the machine when used,

      but on other computers it's the only way to get the

      interrupt routing table. Try this option if the kernel

      is unable to allocate IRQs or discover secondary PCI

      buses on your motherboard.

      rom [iA-32] Assign address space to expansion ROMs.

      Use with caution as certain devices share address

      decoders between ROMs and other resources.

      irqmask=0xMMMM  [iA-32] Set a bit mask of IRQs allowed to be assigned

      automatically to PCI devices. You can make the kernel

      exclude IRQs of your ISA cards this way.

      lastbus=N  [iA-32] Scan all buses till bus #N. Can be useful

      if the kernel is unable to find your secondary buses

      and you want to tell it explicitly which ones they are.

      assign-busses  [iA-32] Always assign all PCI bus

      numbers ourselves, overriding

      whatever the firmware may have

      done.

    Maybe this 'll help , this is easier to read in/usr/src/linux/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt

    (part of the kernel documentation installed with the kernel source.

    does your scanner need a firmware upload?

    Some scanners (usb need a firmware file to be uplaoded to them ach time they power on before using. the sane backend in /etc/sane.d/ generally requires a path to the scanner firmware file. If you open your backend file, youll get to know if its needs one or not. for this you have to know which backend you need for your scanner. for that you can go to www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.htm to find out.

    Well hope you fix it.

    regards

  2. ok these links show proxies on port 80 and others. So is it possible to use them for ftp? because that happens on port 21???

    Are these servers for all services or specific for ftp or http etc? Irrespective of the port no?

    Any idea please?

  3. Hi .

    Can anyone tell me about any free internet proxy servers that i can use to connect to Lycos uk ftp servers?

    The problem is that lycos uk denies ftp access to people with tripod pages if the IP is outside europe. I have heard that its possible to connect using a european or american proxy server.

    Can anyone tell me how this is done and how i can use it?

    thanks

  4. :lol: just installed 9.1

    Been downloading for 8 days with d4x.

    Thought i would share my experience here.

    the first cd downloaded fast - 1.5 days. The second two cds took the rest of time. With d4x the 2 cd iso got stuck with 79kb to go and stayed there for almost three hours. it was downloading the file in 10 parts form many different servers. I used gftp to complete the 79 kb from a french server and then the md5sum didnt match. Well ok ill install with the 1st iso only.

    Then i burned the first iso. ..... couldnt read it. Burned another one .....couldnt read it either. burned a third one .... same story. 3 coasters is too much!!!!!

    dismantled the cdrw drive (* samsung) cleaned it up, lubed the parts inside and reassembled and rebooted.

    The Coasters were not really coasters !!! I have three MDK 9.1 discs!!!!!!

    I have to say 9.1 is really cool. Dma enabled by default, my scanner works straight away, i had to do a lot of playing to get it working in mdk9.

    Only where is mozilla messenger????? Openofice?

    Well i guess another 3 days and i should have the second cd also.....

    but then I think that can wait !! This is really cool to play with and then i will install what i want slowly maybe with an ftp urpmi source. Lets burn cd3 now.

    Anyway.

  5. you can try

    homepage builder from ibm.(do a google search to come up with exact location)

    You will have to install that as well as the wine for homepagebuilder package.

    Its quite functional and nice.

  6. Ghostwriting Still a Problem: Remember the mysterious wireless keyboard that transported its signals to PCs across the room? It's struck again, this time sending a letter Oslo, Norway, resident Are Wormnes was writing to his considerate neighbor, Orjan Stokkeland. Stokkeland kindly called Wormnes to tell him what was going on. At first, Stokkeland thought his computer had a virus, but when his PC magically started writing a letter to protest a telephone company bill in Wormnes' behalf, he figured it out, reported Aftenposten. HP's response at first was to suggest Wormnes talk to all the neighbors and get them to switch channels. Then it said that Wormnes should just be careful about what he typed. Finally, the Norwegian news source reported, HP apologized via spokesman Joakim Larsen for the advice to avoid writing sensitive information. "That just isn't adequate. It is also regrettable that he was told to arrange channel selection with his neighbors. Those that have had this problem have switched to our new model with 256 different channels and higher security. Each time the computer is turned on the keyboard chooses a new channel at random. Then it is not possible to monitor someone's computer all the time," Larsen said. No, not all the time, but it is still possible. "You won't be 100 percent safe with the new model either. If you want to be completely sure that no one can see what you are writing then you should use a keyboard with a cord," Aftenposten quoted Larsen as saying.

  7. i tjink that there was an jHP (or IBM?) wireless keyboard that was recalled because it was sending input not only to the users pc but also to a users pc in the nest building!!

    Do a google search, For wireless keyboard problem or something. Some of these keyboards have 8 meter range and they work on rf. See if any blutooth keyboards are there for you?

  8. ndeb said

    There are mozilla-1.2.1 rpms for mandrake-9.0 in....

    Nope they dont have it yet.

    I am not worried about a targz install, done a few before. what im worried about is wether this mozilla will integrate easily into mdk9.0 menus etc. Will it overwrite the old one? or will it exist in a separate directorey in my home folder?

    Could anyone clarify please?

    Also what are the advantages of the new 1.3 mozzila? Over the previous one?

  9. there is some type of bios limit for 32 gb drives- on older bioses

    that is the drive whether its 32 or 40 or 80 gb get recognised only as 32 gb. I think that when i was putting in my 80 gb drive there was some option of reporting its capacity as 32 gb.

    I dont have the exact details but i think it was on the seagate website in the partition magic documentation maybe? :roll:

  10. hi,

    i have this wierd problem with my scanner under linux.

    My scanner works fine on only one of my six usb ports on my nvidia nforce(1) asus a7n266vm motherboards. On any of the five other ports, the system hangs at boot time around the mounting devfs part.

    If i hotplug it instantly freezes and there is 0 log output in any of the logs.

    I am really lost as to why this happens, especially since in wondows it works on any of the six ports.

    Does anyone have any pointers?

    regards

    Kunal

  11. ok here what i think i did is:

    <Font>

     <Substitution>

      <FontPairs cfg:element-type="FontReplacement">

       <FontReplacement state="replaced" cfg:name="_1">

        <Always cfg:type="boolean">true</Always>

        <OnScreenOnly cfg:type="boolean">true</OnScreenOnly>

        <ReplaceFont cfg:type="string">Andale Sans UI</ReplaceFont>

        <SubstituteFont cfg:type="string">Helvetica</SubstituteFont>

       </FontReplacement>

      </FontPairs>

      <Replacement cfg:type="boolean">true</Replacement>

     </Substitution>

    </Font>

    see the changes i have typed in the third and the 8th lines.

    That i think did the trick for me.

  12. to fix this you have to go to file:/home</your home directory >/.openoffice/user/config/registry/instance/org/openoffice/Office/common

    there edit the file called commaon or something and find the section about fornt replacement.

    then put in the name of the font you want to use and also set the value of <Replace fonts> or something like that to 1. then on restarting openoffice you should be able to see your menus agin.

    im sory for being so vague but this happened to me too a long time ago and i dont remeber excatly what i did. nbut on changing the value in the common.xml to arail or somehting like that all the menu fonts etc reappeared as arial.

    Try it, im sure youll figure it out.
