  1. that was not from manriva 2007, i posted in mistake then i remove that, i can't ping the localhost in mandriva 2007., this is the error:

    # ping 127.0.0.1

    connect: Network is unreachable

As root try the command 'ifconfig lo up' ( without the quotes ). This should try to activate the interface. I can use ifconfig to activate and deactivate my loopback interface.

  2. I have tried to reinstall both CUPS and HPLIJS.

Did you remove cups first? Did you remove the driver first? Did you use Install software through MCC to preform the installs and removals?

I would also like to know if you have any or all of the cups packages still installed. To find out, go to MCC, Software Management, and do a search for cups. Post back all cups packages it shows as installed.

What repos do you have set up? Could you list them?

From Linuxprinting, org that appears to be the correct driver for your printer. Since it did work at one point, it must be.

    Have you looked at the web interface for cups to display the configuration? To do so, open a web browser, and in the location bar enter;

http://localhost:631 This will bring up the web interface for installing, configuring, and managing your printer. I know Mandriva gives you other ways to do the same thing, this one is consistent across all distros.

    Post back what you find.

  3. I followed the instructions for updating the kernel. I can boot either of the older kernels, or the new one. So far so good. This is Mandriva 2008. uname -a shows:

After installing the new kernel, I noticed the Nvidia logo no longer appeared while logging on. Did a search, and found the following to restore the propriety driver.

    1. log on a root and run init 3.

    2. Run XFdrake

    3.Select the GeForce 3/4 driver

    4.Reply YES to proprietary driver.

    5. After all packages installed, run test ( it was successful )

    6. init 5 to start up the x server.

O.K. so now I have the Nvidia driver restored.

I'm not sure why the Nvidia propriety driver no longer loads after a kernel update, but that has now happened on my system on two upgrades.

Now if I start compiz, it starts, I get a black desktop without icons visible. If I run the mouse pointer over the task bar, it pops up as normal and is visible. I can launch applications.

I can see Thunderbird as normal, if I launch firefox, I see the window decorations, but can not see filefox. It appears as a black hole. If I launch a konsole, I can see my desktop as a transparent background. It is black around the konsole.

I looked through the CCSM to try and find if a setting got borked, but can not find out which one it may be.

I switched to metisse, and it works normally as does No 3D effects.

O.K. so my question is; how can I reset all compiz settings to default and get back to a working spinning cube, where I can see all applications? Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

In case it matters, the video card is "GeForce 6100 nForce 430". The loaded module is "NVIDIA GeForce FX and later"

I have found a fix, I'm updating this thread in case anyone else has a similar problem.

I don't think this has anything to do with the kernel update, since after the update it failed on both the new kernel, and old kernels. I found the fix here --> http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Troubleshooting#mistakes I looked under " Black Window Bug ".

I opened CCSM and on the General section, Command tab I entered '--inderect-rendering' , went to MCC, and in Drak3D selected Compiz again. It now works.

    Fixed. :D

  5. I had the same problem, and this fix worked for me. I later installed emerald using URPMI, and changed the command for windows decorations to emerald. Emerald does not crash on my system, and gives me a little nicer look. I also added more buttons to the top bar. B)

  6. Some months later, and a new machine. I'm updating this, just incase someone else goes down this road.

I have new hardware, now running Mandriva 2008 ( 32 bit free edition ). The system is a AMD 64 bit system. I now have a DVD burner. B)

O.K. If you want to create a slide show in linux that shoudl play on any decent DVD player. Here is the software I'm using. Can't tell you what other options might be out there.

I installed two main packages, DVD-Slideshow and ToVid. Both have their own web sites with support. DVD-Slideshow is a collection of scripts, and bin executables. I used URPMI to install them so I had all the pre-req's.

With dir2slideshow ( comes with DVD-slideshow ) you create a txt file for input to DVD-slideshow. Easy command line tool to use. Read the man page, everything I needed was there. Then I used dvd-slideshow to creage a .vob file. This is a file you can play with mplayer or xine. Once you have several ( or just one ) .vob file, you use ToVid to create the menu's and DVD. ( can also create VCD or SVCD's ).

I'm using K3b to burn the DVD ( VCD or SVCD ). Lots of options, menu's etc.

If anyone has a better way, don't hesitate to let us know.

  7. I tried Amarok, it gave me more problems than XMMS, so I removed it. I have been able to get Audacious to play shoutcast streams, but it is a pain to get to work. XMMS only requires you to click on a .pls file saved from the shoutcast web page, and a minute or so later, it connects. Audacious, I have to go to the playlist, click on the stream I want, and poke the play button. Nothing else I have found will work. It does connect to the stream in just a few seconds though. That is a big improvment over XMMS. So I guess for now I'll go with Audacious.

  8. I'm running Mandriva 2007 spring edition. I have been a long time user of XMMS, and for the most part it has worked well, until 2007.1. For some reason I have not been able to define, if I launch a .pls file from shoutcast with XMMS, it takes about 30 seconds or more to start playing. On older versions, it took less than 10 seconds.

So I did a little research, and it appears XMMS is no longer in development, so I guess no one is fixing and problems with it. With this information, I looked around for an alternative. Audacious seems to be one program recommended. I installed it using urpmi. It will play .mp3 or .ogg files from my system, but I can not get it to play anything from shoutcast. I have tried a lot of different things. I did look to see what plugins were installed, but became confused as to what I need to play a audio stream. There is a long list of installed, and enabled plugins.

What I would like is one program to play .mp3's, .ogg, audio streams, and CD's Asking too much? ( Without the long startup I get with XMMS ). BTW, I also tried XMMS2, but can't get it to play an audio stream at all.

  9. I gave up on EasyVcd. It seems they will allow you to produce only a 5 slide show without buying their package.

I have installed ToVid and gave that a try. I took the file I produced with DVD-slideshow and used it with ToVid and produced a playable VCD. It played on my Sony DVD player.

Strange thing, it will not play in Xine. Xine closes as soon as it starts to play. Hmmmm.

I was able to create a title page with background music. It is a slide show of about 50 slides. I will try and produce some more working VCD/s to see what I can do.

  10. Scarcrow,

Thank-you for the reply. I have come to the same conclusion on Nero. EasyVCD is available as a try now, pay later download.

I have spent some time trying to use DVD-Slidshow. I can produce a file on disk that I can play in Xine. I just have not figured out how to burn the correct stuff to a VCD, so I can put it in the DVD palyer attached to the TV. There are examples how to do it for a DVD, but not a VCD. Hmmmm. It may be time to break down, upgrade the system and get a DVD burner...

  11. Have you tried a regular commercial vcd? Maybe it only has problems playing your 'home brew'

Interesting thought, I'm not sure where I would get a commercially available VCD. I spent a lot of time trying to find out if any one else has had success using Nero to burn a VCD of stills. But there is little information available.

I found some threads saying EasyVCD is a good program to burn a VCD. I have installed it, and I'm going to try it; as soon as I have time to figure that program out. Then I'll have another thing to compare to; not just a Nero burned VCD.

  12. I am running Mandiva 2007.1. I have xine installed, 0.99.4. I installed it using URPMI and saw no problems during install. I can play audio CD's and radio streams from the internet with Xine.

I burned the VCD's using Nero on windows. The VCD's play on my DVD player without issue, so as far as I can tell, the CD's are in good condition, and were burned correctly.

The CD's are slide shows, of stills taken on my Nikon digital camera.

I have played with the setup, without finding any solution. If I click the VCD play button on Xine, I see the CD light flash, and then I see a lot of disk activity, that will last up to 5 minutes. Eventually xine crashes. Uaually I do a Ctrl Alt Backspace to kill KDE to recover the system.

Is there a log for Xine or should I look in a system log some where to look for error information? I ran it from a konsole, but I don't get any errors, or clues why the VCD fails to play.

Is there something I have not installed I may need to play a slide show VCD? According to the documentation on Xinehq, Xine should play a VCD. I also tried a SVCD burned on Nero, that didn't work either. ( I'm far less concerned with the SVCD right now. )

As a side light, I have spent a ton of time trying to figure out how to create a side show VCD in linux. I have a few ideas, but this does not appear to be an easy one to solve. Right now I'm trying Tovid to see if it can do the job. The objective is to get rid of one last thing I use windoze for.

  13. Greg2,

Thank-you for your reply. You are correct, I did add the 2007, not 2007.spring repos. I have removed the 2007 and added 2007.spring. I have updated the system, that took a lot of time, but is done. I have also installed swat, and used it.

It was an easy mistake to make, Easy-urpmi defaults to 2007, not 2007.spring. Next time I'll pay more attention to avoid that type of mistake.

    Problem solved.

  14. I have just installed Mandriva 2007, Spring free from the DVD image. On my 2006 system I used Swat to do various anmin tasks in samba. I have done the updates after the install. I have worked out most problems, but this one I don't understand how to fix.

I set up the online mirrors with easy-urpmi. I have Main, Main-update, contrib, contrib-update plf, plf-free and updates.

I tried to install swat, from the command line here is what I get.

    urpmi samba-swat-3.0.23b-7mdv2007.0.i586

The following packages can't be installed because they depend on packages

that are older than the installed ones:

    samba-swat-3.0.23b-7mdv2007.0

I have no idea how to figure out what packages are are too new for Swat. How do I get swat installed without forcing it?

  15. I have a triple boot system, w98 Mdk 9.2 and Mandriva 2006.

I have had no success fixing menudrake in 2006. I discovered I have killed MCC, that won't launch any more. It's a long sad tail, so I decided its time to install a fresh system, something new to play with...

W98 and Mdk 9.2 are fine. 2k6 is ( was ) my main system. Before I install, I like to make copies of many of the configuration files, just in case I can't get something working right away. It also saves a lot of time re-figuring out things like what sound module to modprobe. So, here is a list of things I have made copies of in my /home directory.

My question, what may have I overlooked? Suggestions, please.

    Already backed up...

    - Firefox bookmarks

    - fstab

    - I piped lsmod and lspci to files

    - For NFS hosts.allow hosts.deny exports

    - For samba smb.conf

    - xorg.conf

    - ifcfg-eth0

    - resolv.conf

    - menu.lst

    - piped df command to a file

    - made a backup of the .kde directory and contents

I will format the / partition and do a clean install.

  16. I ran a strace on menudrake. It produced a very large file. Here are the last few lines. There appears to be an invalid pointer.

    munmap(0xb6c8e000, 4096) = 0
    open("/dev/tty", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK|O_NOCTTY) = 4
    writev(4, [{"*** glibc detected *** ", 23}, {"free(): invalid pointer", 23}, {": 0x", 4}, {"08636818", 8}, {" ***\n", 5}], 5) = 63
    rt_sigprocmask(SIG_UNBLOCK, [ABRT], NULL, 8) = 0
    tgkill(6145, 6145, SIGABRT) = 0
    --- SIGABRT (Aborted) @ 0 (0) ---
    +++ killed by SIGABRT +++

I have the trace file, if I didn't post enough information.

  17. One more update, I found a thread that used the command 'update-menus' so I ran it as a user with the -u switch. I now have menudrake failing with the following error -

    menudrake
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x083108e8 ***
    Aborted

Same old question, how to fix?

  18. I un-installed xchat and bittorrent, then re-installed them both. That has cleaned up some of the errors, however, menudrake still crashes, with the following error.

    menudrake
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (!prev): 0x083114e8 ***
    Aborted

    How do I fix this?

  19. I tried to run 'update'. I had problems connecting to the mirrors, so I decided to delete all media, used Easy-Urpmi to add back the media, and ran update. It did install three updates, but that was it.

Now when I start menudrake, I get the following -

attribute |"true"| in "?package(xchat)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(xchat)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
    Segmentation fault

This is only slightly different than the original failure I posted. How do I go about fixing these invalid pointers?

  20. Are you sure your system is fully upgraded?

No. I started noticing this behavior some time after updating the system. I can try to run Update again, and see what happens.

Xchat and Bittorrent seem to be the two applications there are errors for. I thought about unistalling them and re-installing to see if that would help. Thoughts???

  21. I have searched the forum, and found several other threads dealing with this topic, but no solutions. Here is what happens when I start menudrake as a user form a konsole.

    menudrake
attribute |"true"| in "?package(xchat)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(xchat)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
attribute |"true"| in "?package(bittorrent-gui)" is invalid
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (normal): 0x08750248 ***
    Aborted

Strange thing I don't understand, I can lauch menudrake as root, sometimes it works, some time it crashes. This system has been installed since 2006 waws released, and I have done many updates. I'm not sure when menudrake started failing. I went to add an entry for Opera, and that is when I discovered broken menudrake. I can live with it, I just made a desktop icon for Opera. It is anoying.

I did some pocking around, xchat and bittorent applications both have menu icons, and work. Since menudrake does not crash until the "glibc" error, I'm guessing this has something to do with glibc.

Any thoughts on how to fix, or do further problem determination?

  22. Thank-you to all who responded to this thread.

I have got the upgraded kernel installed. Here is the short version of what I did.

I installed grub from 2006. I had to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to add an entry for Mandrake 9.2.

I tested and made sure all three systems booted.

    I then ran the command

    urpmi kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.12.31mdk

The kernel installed without a problem. It added new entries for the new kernel, and did not remove the entries for the old kernel.

So far no problems at all. I'll run like this for a few days and do some more testing, and remove the old kernel after I'm sure there are no issues.

  23. Don't double post about the same problem,

Every board is different. I won't do it again. My apologizes.

Move the boot loader to the newer system - just install it from MCC.

I guess it doesn't matter if 9.2 or 2006 has control of the boot loader. I'll give this a try and retry the kernel upgrade.

You are sure you use lilo to handle your booting (I see a directory called grub)?

It is lilo. I suspect the Grup directory was created when I switched the boot loader to grub for a while. I switched it back while working on another problem. I think it was when I installed 10, and I couldn't get the new install to boot. I had some idea how to get it working under lilo, so I switched back, and never went to back to grub. The directory is empty.

  24. I have been trying to upgrade the stalk kernel on my 2006 system and can not get it to work.

Here is what I tried, at least the last miserable attempt.

    urpmi kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.12.31mdk

    ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Li...-2.6.12.31mdk-1 -1mdk.i586.rpm

    installing kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.12.31mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms

error: %unknownscript(kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.12.31mdk-1-1mdk.i586) scriptlet failed, exit status 21

As you can see, status 21. I have tried this from command line, and through MCC, the results are the same both ways. Here is what I see in /boot.

    ls -l

I get a new vmlinuz file, but I do not get a new initrd-2.6.12-31mdk.img file.

This is a triple boot system. I have posted this before, but I have not received an answer, so I thought I would try again. Mandrake 9.2 is the system controlling lilo. I know I have to update lilo.conf and then run 'lilo' under mdk9.2. I tried that with a variety of other kernels, but none seem to install all the files.

I suspect the problem is the install script can not update lilo, since it doesn't find one. Can someone give me some guidance? I have read a ton of posts recommending using Mandriva kernels.
