  1. In Europe the DVB is the way to go. Here in Finland the analog sendings will be killed in 2007 so all analog receiver cards will be useless after that. My TV and VCR are now some 14 years old. The end of their life can't be very far, so I have been looking for replacements. I was thinking about making a PC based digital recorder/TV and run into this project: VDR Needless to say, I'm quite interested, but so far had neither money nor time to actually start. Has anybody on this forum done it? Any success? Hashimoto
  2. Ah, it's that way around. I should have guessed tha actual blame was on M$... Hashimoto
  3. I get this message every single time and I got to use the button to power off. I understand it that the system is already in "Shutdown mode" and it is safe to use the button. The reason for the system not to power itself off is a (known) bug in the VIA circuit on my Abit KX7-333 MB (or at least that is what I found out when playing around with ACPI and trying to fix the problem). ACPI does not work with it and I guess I can blame VIA for that (funny though that Widows works OK...). I have no problems restarting the PC though. Using ML10CE with ReiserFS. Hashimoto
  4. Ah, the card readers. Now, they can be pretty grueling. First, it could help if you tell which version of Mandrake you are using and the make and modell of your card reader. Simple one card readers shoud not be a problem. I would suggest that you plug the reader in and insert a card. Then start your computer. The system should detect it automatically and MDK10 should place an icon on the KDE desktop (I quess this is the MS way of making things, but it should work). My reader got detected during Mandrake 10 install and supermount works fine. Clicking the icon opens Konqueror with the CF contents. However, if you are using a multi card reader you may find yourself in trouble. I used to have a CF/MC combo back when using MDK9 and I never succeeded to make it work. I gave up finally. I haven't tried with Mandrake 10 though. And dear senior/experienced/guru fellow users. I've been using Mandrake some three years now. I have learned a thing or two, but I still consider myself as a newbie. In the beginning I was totally lost with some instructions I got from here and elswhere. We newbies need good, clear and simple point-to-point instructions and advice. The geek mumbojumbo, which is clear and easy to you, is sometimes hebrew (or finnish, if you prefer :P ) to us. I can imagine Nazgulled's frustration with this issue and understand what he needs: "Please open Mandrake Control Center. Click on Hardware and... Write "/mnt/cf.." to the box..." etc. Regards Hashimoto
  5. Thanks guys, This forum just amazes me in the responsiveness! I run the original CE without any updates. Got to update, I guess, but since I'm behind a modem, I got to wait till I'm back in the office and can burn the updates on a CDR. On the other hand the OE will soon be out, so maybe I'll wait for it. Let's see Hashimoto
  6. Ladies and Gents, When I insert a CDRom in the DVD/CDR (an old LG) and open up the Konqueror I have no probs reading the contents. But when I try top do it for another CDRom, I have no success. The same is true to the CDRW (HP something). Only the first read is succesfull. During the second attempt only part of the files are shown, sometimes the names (of those few files) are replaced by question marks and sometimes absolutely nothing shows up in the window. Closing the Konqueror window inbetween the changes does not help. It seems that Konqueror is running even after closing the window (process in the Kmonitor (?) window still there), but killing this process does not help. The discs should be OK since I can read them in the office. So, is this and issue with Konquer or are both of my equipment failing at the same time? Any hints? Hashimoto
  7. Salut Gowator, "And you'd think a bit of respect might go a long way in supporting Finnish in Linux" Couldn't agree more... :D Linus help us! Oh, sorry. His mother tongue is Swedish. Anyway, our noteworthy group of five million speakers is hardly the first group to consider/worry about. "p.s. Don't wanna upset ya but have you considered using a US keyb ??" No offence, but nope. We need these scandinavian letters (åäö) all too frequently to manage without a real finnish keyboard. Even my real name has 2xä at the end. Or lets make a sample: "This desk here" in finnish is "Tämä työpöytä tässä". Imagine writing that without the scand keys on keyboard... "(I can't even imagine what you do with 16 cases )" Well, you know the prepositions(?) in english (on, in, at, by, out of, into etc.) are basically written into the words. I never mastered them at school, but maybe it is enough to be able to use them. I guess our ancestors didn't have much to do during the cold and dark winters, so for pastime they decided to make speaking just a tad more challenging. Hashimoto
  8. Thanks Gowator, This is not actually a big problem for me, just an annoyance. The strange thing for me is that comma turns out pipe. I could somehow comprehend a dot, but pipe somehow doesn't make any sense. Anyway, waiting to see if a fix is out some day. Hashimoto
  9. Ladies and Gents, Does anybody know why does this happen and how to fix it: I have a finnish keyboard. The num pad has comma (,) as the decimal separator. and it has been defined as such in the KDE control panel. In KDE and other apps it seems to produce the proper sign, but not so with the Mozilla. Push this button and pipe (|) comes on the screen. Pushing comma on the alphabet keyboard is OK, however. This is somewhat annoying at least when I'm paying my bills on line. So if there are any ideas on how to fix this, I would appreciate them. BR Hashimoto ML9.2
  10. OK back again, After a little reading I realized that I need to install the dxr3 packages to have support for the card. Done, but I still don't have any pic out from the card. How does one then configure the system? I seem to miss /dev/em8300 so its obvious some kind of cinfuguration is needed, but how? Hashimoto
  11. It's a video out card with - s-video connector for video out - stereo out connector - S/P DIF out connector - VGA IN & OUT connectors (VGA pass-through, which is working, but I guess that is what is says: just a dumb pass-through Hashimoto
  12. Hi, I bought a secondhand RealMagick Hollywood Plus HW MPG2 decoder. Installed it and ML92 seems to correctly recognize it. The quesitons is, how do I get the playback from Xine (or Totem ar anything) to happen through the card so that I can connect my TV to it? How to configure the card options (in harddrake) and how to configure Xine (decoder options I guess). Newbie trying too much? BR Hashimoto
  13. Well, it seems that my mobo has a VIA circuit and there is a BIOS fault that prevents the ACPI froms starting. Kernel has this on the black list or something so obviously it will never work with this BIOS. Got to see if I can update it somehow. Thanks anyway. Hashimoto
  14. Gents, ML92, Abit KX-333, XP1700+, ATI Radeon LE, 256MB, 60GB, I got this problem of not getting the acpi to work. MB is ACPI compliant and worked fine with W2k. But since switching to linux I have not been able to shut down the PC without by pushing the button. Now, I'm fed up with this and want to get the ACPI to work properly. A slight difference I could notice in behaviour between ML9.1 and 9.2 is that with 9.1 I had to push the power button for five secs to shut down. With 9.2 this happens almost immediately. Still the system ends up with "Power down" and waits for my action. Enabling ACPI at ML control center (acpi=ht) does not work. Neither does any combination of acpi=on/off/ht noapic/nolapic in lilo.conf/start up. The processes list shows that ACPI and daemon are always down. APM is not enabled. There is no proc/acpi/. Thus I guess the ACPI is not set up in any way. Being a *nix-illiterate (even though using ML since two years) I need somewhat attention to get this done and would really appreciate simple instructions. Maybe I even learn something in the process. BTW, there doesn't seem to be any usable FAQ on setting up ACPI on ML. Anybody? Hashimoto
  15. Hi folks, I was playing around with the Kicker and removed the Korganizer from it . It was on the same "box" with the Klipper. Now I just can't find a way to get it back in the original place :? . If I add the systemtray, the Korganizer is there, but it is not in the same "box" as the Klipper. How do I get it back like it was? Hashimoto
  16. Sorry for late reply, been out of country for a few days. Thanks for the hints, I will try them next week (kinda busy just now) and let you know how things work out. Hashimoto
  17. Hi there, Just out of curiosity (and future reference), I installed Rosegarden4. Everything seems to run OK except for the sound. There isn't sound. What may be the problem? I downnloaded some MIDI sequences and I can well hear them on other apps (KMidi etc), but RG4 does not send out one note. I even adjusted all the AlsaMixer controls without success. Am I just so plain stupid (quite possible) or do I have to configure RG4 somehow or what? Any help is appreciated. MDK9.1, SBLive, AMD1700+, mm-kernel, no probs with other sounds. Hashimoto
  18. Thank's guys, I found my mail. I would love to update Mozilla, but since im using modem connection...
  19. Strange things happen to my emails in Mozilla mail. I have several email accounts but only one is affected: It downloads and shows email OK, but if go to another account and then return, all mails are missing. Nothing, empty. I even looked behind my screen, but they are not there either. And this happens at my fathers, computer too (got him converted). I have the standard MDK 9.0 with Mozilla 1.1. Regards Hashimoto
  20. What can I do: OO Calc uses "." as a decimal separator and "," as thousand separator even though I've set it vice versa in KDE/ML9. How to fix this?? Couldnt find any setting for this in the OOo. Thanks in advance. Hashimoto
