is this possible. i was just thinking if i have a serial keyboard for my aging P166 back at home and im not sure if it was shipped back to the province. my rough idea is to boot the 166 with a floppy-based distro and do a network installation using ssh.

can anybody refine/refute my idea? i still dont have any specifics on how this can be done so any input is appreciated.

a search in freshmeat reveals dnotify. its description states

dnotify is a simple program that makes it possible to execute a command every time the contents of a specific directory change in Linux. It is run from the command line and takes two arguments: one or more directories to monitor and a command to execute whenever a directory has changed. Options control what events to trigger on: when a file was read in the directory, when one was created/deleted, etc.

you could get away with setting a share user and then swoop the files with chown -rf share.share /home/shares (check the command. my cli memory is getting rusty), or you can ask the bash nuts in this board for something more fancy.

just like what the article said, lindows is just what attracts attention to the hardware. i guess you can just install mandrake with it but im not all familiar with the hardware specified in the article.

mine goes like this: fat32, fat32-extended,/boot,linux-mix-mash.

the only reason i keep /boot with ext2 is i might try to install another linux system in the machine and keeping the boot partition basic will definitely help. besides its only 96MB. how long would it take to fsck the whole partition?

yes. my mandrake system at home is mostly reiserfs except for /boot (which is ext2) and /var (ext3 because I have read somewhere that there were some problems with reiser and a daemon that I can remember which).

you can also go wacko and try the various filesystems available during installationg. just make sure that you do an expert install to get the most out of the experience. dont let the expert label fool you as its easy if you can read and understand the instructions. :#:

I was thinking about installing Mandrake 9.1 and normally I just choose the mandrakedir on the ftp-server, but there is also a mandrake-crypto and a mandrake-devel directory. What are the differences?

without visiting the sites ill hazard a guess.mandrake-crypto contains crytographic tools while mandrake-devel is the cooker folder (experimental builds) . since 9.1 is still a release candidate, i would further guess that the main directory and mandrake-devel contains packages that are not that much different.

Last question: if I would compile the mandrake-source (not the applications) on my computer, would that result necessary in a faster OS( I know it takes a  long time to compile)? If yes, with wich gcc-version should I compile it?

you would probably just gain a marginal speed increase which is not worth the hassle of rebuilding the whole distro. but then, nobody is stopping you to experiment. :#:

i dont own a dell but excessive harddrive activity means that it is being accessed. does it happen no matter what OS is currently running? it might be that the memory is not enough and your OS is caching some data into its swap. but then it could be a number of mechanical reasons,i.e. loose seating of the harddrive, harddrive is really noisy, harddrive is going to give, etc.

just a guess as i dont have a linux system here to test on, try creating a directory in your /home and create a link in var to point into it. something like

# ln -s /home/www /var/www

or something like it. it might not work but its worth a shot.

there is not limit to the number of threads that you can start in a day, much less for technical questions. the number of people answering is not relevant. you are not helping that number to increase if you embed questions in a non-relevant thread because the people who might be able to answer might not visit the thread thinking they cant add anything in it. just like what Counterspy implied, putting your question in a relevant thread or in a thread of its own will benefit future users of the board who have a similar question. that is not even saying putting relevant subjects in each thread. when you are searching the board, it would be faster to pinpoint related threads if they have subject like "Help in compiling xxx app" rather than "help me".

you need to be root to use urpmi (last i looked you had to be). :)

Isn't that backwards?  --initdb initializes the rpm database and --rebuilddb rebuilds the database.

you might have to do it the way bvc said because you need to rebuild it to working order before initializing for use. just my opinion though.

you can only use that kind of importing if the class being imported and the source file being compiled belongs to the same package (either defined or unnamed). otherwise you have to use the fully qualified packagename for importing.

sorry but i didnt read the thread thoroughly but skipped here and there. from what i can remember, the rpmdrake (which is the frontend for urpmi so i believe what i will below can apply to urpmi itself) that came with 9.0 has a safety net that when a user tries to upgrade the kernel it will install it instead. This was brought to a lot of newbie complaints before that the rpmdrake from pre-9.0 releases were happily upgrading the system whenever the user clicks on the install/upgrade button and thus hoses their system down.

thus, to make rpmdrake more newbie-friendly it was splitted and dumbed down*.

actually its good but when i tried it i was looking for something to replace hummingbird's exceed in exporting the X display to window clients. my most significant beef with it is i cant figure out how to open X applications in their own window. to me, using cygwin makes me feel im using just a dumb x-terminal console (it might be a good thing but it leaves me craving for more).

btw, i noticed that we have hijacked this misplaced thread. Moderators?
