  1. the truth is that i havent heard of this news until now. to me it sounds nice. if they are going to fork the project then that would be good to the linux community if it will provide better services/software. linux is all about choice. this move will only provide us with another one. :) ciao!
  2. basing on the posts, then i would say yes. basing on my (1 week) experience then i would say no as i havent encountered anything yet (knocking on wood). ciao!
  3. will do. thanks for the input guys! ciao!
  4. after reading that read about the sudo package. there is a simple introduction/tutorial at manrakesecure.net. ciao!
  5. yes, i have read that part but im hoping on the part that said it should normally work unless something in the NTFS setup barfs partimage. here is to hoping that it works. :) ciao!
  6. it seems this fits better here... Im working at a Win2k and NTFS only office and I need to reblast (restore from image) a couple of workstations for deployment. The problem is that the main tech group is having difficulty creating a new norton ghost image of the updated workstation configuration. So i had these idea. IDEA: boot the model pc using knoppix, create an image of the whole harddrive (and i mean the whole since repartitioning isnt allowed, dont ask me why), and write the partition to a shared folder in the network (actually my workstation). If im successful at that then i would just reverse the process to do the other workstations. Questions: 1) Does partimage really work with creating an image of a NTFS drive? My knoppix is one version older than the current release. 2) If i need to update partimage to do this, how do i do this without downloading the new knoppix? im on dialup at home and i need to do this on monday. 3) Will i encounter problems writing to a shared folder which I hope to connect to using samba? How about reading it to do the blasting? 4) Any problem that i missed out? ciao!
  7. have you seen this thread -> http://mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=4324 ? ciao!
  8. my offtopic reply. ciao!
  9. what flags did you use to install/update the rpm? can you give us the name of the packages in question? if they have the same name or provides the same components then rpm shouldnt have installed them unless you used the 'forced' flag. doesnt rpm -e [packagename] work? anyway, i think your system is in bad shape. look at it this way, we have a 8.1 guru here that specializes in exotic problems that would get normal people running through a re-install/upgrade. :#: ciao!
  10. from http://mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?p=30915 im just reposting it here hoping it can get the targeted audience. reply back on the thread please and notify our french translators. ciao!
  11. although i would recommend that you always boot to the console mode and install Xtart (to switch between available windowmanagers), it might not be convenient for you so just check SoulSe's post and do it in reverse. ciao!

addendum, you only need the makefile if it provides the uninstall target. but the bold letters above still holds if the app developers did some magic things. :#: ciao!
  13. would any mod be interested in cleaning (re:deleting/splicing/locking) this thread? ciao!
  14. <snip> oh that does it. this was supposed to be another attempt by me to inject humor to this escalating issue. i should have stayed offline and work instead. i never thought i could escalate a thread this far in such a short time. sorry guys. [...] i think ill just log-off now. ciao!
  15. as I said quite clearly, this is not about opinions. It is about Ixthusdan insulting me and calling my fact based arguments "absurd". and thus it all boils down to opinions: ixthusdan's and your's when it comes to each other's posts. worse, where were the mods when Ixthusdan began this? All of a sudden when I call him on it it's a problem? where were the mods? pick one 1) dealing with problems/situations in their real life, 2) browsing other parts of the forum, or 3) cowering in the corner because they feared me . kidding aside, it was me who brought this thread to bvc's attention. if only i paid enough attention to what was being posted and saw that it could get this ugly then i would have called their attention. them being evil mods doesnt alter the fact that this is our board and we should each help in maintaining harmony. no, let's not. in fact, I want an aplology from Ixthusdan, and I want it made clear that such behaviour will be moderated as it is supposed to be. if it was me (which it is not), lets try this again when everybody has cooled down. from my perspective tempers are already at high levels. it is up to ixthusdan if he want to apologize or not, or how he want to handle this situation. and if anybody thinks a thread already has something brewing, dont hesitate to flag a mod's attention. help me find work for them to do. :) err, pardon me but like i said bigwords make my head spin . but can you explain how this differs from what i said? and im not telling anybody specifically. im telling EVERYBODY! and not much good at that i think. ciao!
  16. this is the first time that somebody complained for not being blamed. :) and i hope this is not another 'im leaving post'. is it just me or is everybody experiencing loss of humor and increase in crankiness? ciao!
  17. im not naming names as im not placing blames (hey, it rhymes!). cant we just meet on a neutral point, respect each opinion even if we dont appreciate them, and stop with the assinine remarks? for pete's sake, this thread is even offtopic (i think. hey bvc, how come i have not seen mods exercising their power to splice threads?). lets just settle things down a bit. and join me in heckling the mods, admins and aru. ciao!
  18. like i said, i didnt follow this thread. but reading a few lines led me to believe that this is indeed going to the path of a word-match that can get ugly. either respect each other's opinion or slug it out personally (pm, email, irc, phone alls). im not taking sides but please no more remarks against each other. the world has enough conflicts. :) and im no gandhi character either. i just hang-out here. ciao!
  19. just post the result of this command please $ ls -l ~/.wine ciao!
  20. freshmeat.net rpmfind.net :#: i heard that mdk hides most packages so as not to overwhelm newbies. see this thread -> http://mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=4098. ciao!
  21. i think it would because configure will just create the make file (and its targets). since wine was installed using the makefile's install target, the uninstall target will perform nicely. i have been doing this for sometime now (get wine cvs snapshot, configure, compile, if successful call uninstall then call install). ciao!
  22. i could do that but i maintain a few cvs snapshots of my own so it would be nice to compile it from there. i guess ill have to scrap the whole directory and start afresh as i will try installing 9.1 tonight. ciao!
  23. it been a long time since i updated my gaim cvs sources but all these talk about gaim 0.6.0 is tickling my interest. however my attempts to update my cvs view abruptly end with an error and refers me to nonexistent error messages in the console. anybody have an idea why? is the cvs access temporarily out-of-service? ciao!
  24. tyme, i think sunnydale used make install to install wine and deleted the source afterward. he only needs to run the ./configure script to generate a make file (he is getting errors because he just untarred the sources and i dont think it comes with a default makefile) and then just run make uninstall. or else i misread the whole thing. ciao!
  25. save it in rtf and then change the extension to .doc. if the recipient is that technically stubborn (or misinformed) then he/she wont know the difference. :#: ciao!
