  1. HD has own powered enclosure. My problem is mdk don't use udev to permantly assign dev names as does othe distros.
  2. Thanks for the reply--Please step me thru the config. files. I want to use the drive as a portable full featured distro. I found udev but do not know how to modify to assign permanent dev names. My livecd is actually a puppy distro on a flash drive so I can quickly go to any part of mdk and modify it. Sorry for the delayed response, but I did not get email notify of your post. Will fix email now.
  3. I installed mandriva spring 2007.1 on a 20g usb hd in the first partition, partitioned for swap, fat 32, and another ext3 (empty, for now). The install was done with the drive connected to a powered usb hub. I would like to connect the drive directly to the laptop (hp/compaq nx6110) without the hub. First boot connected to laptop; hangs at grub. modified menu.lst to identify drive as sda. Now hangs at some boot sequence that apparently tries to check the attached drives and gives error message; 'superblock corrupted, if sdb is really an ext2 formatted drive run e2fsk.' I cannot even capture the boot message thats displayed. I'm sure this is a simple problem to you experts, but its frustrating to an old windows user thats trying to go modern.
  4. I made a clean install of Mandriva 2006 on to a new hp nx6110 laptop using the free download dvd. During install I got : "missing /mnt/lib/hotplug/firmware/ipw-2.3*.fw" Get from http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php I hooked up the wired lan and downloaded the tar to my user desktop from sourceforge and do not know how to install the driver. I tried to ark it and get a message indicating I do not have write permission, so I tried to ark it as root and can only access root files not user files. My apologies, for a simple question but it has me in a tailspin.
  5. Well, I went to mcc and searched for libncurses. Found and installed libncurses and libncurses-devel. No change. I still get the error message. What does relink mean? Relink what to what? Off topic: I used mcc last night to install new kernel (2.6.8.1-12mdk). Worked great even updated grub with new option. Question: where is the new kernel /usr/src/2.6.8.1-12mdk? I have /usr/src/linux and /usr/src/2.3-19mdk but no dir for the new kernel. uname -a gives 2.6.8.1-12mdk. ***********Found it!!! Its where it should be: /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk Still don't understand use of /src.
  6. I tried urpmi : # urpmi ncurses ftp://ftp.ens-cachan.fr/mirror/Mandrake/o...9.2mdk.i586.rpm installing /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/ncurses-5.4-1.20040529.2mdk.i586.rpm Preparing... ################################################## 1:ncurses ################################################## Then tried wget: ]$ wget $(urpmq --sources ncurses) removable://mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/ncurses-5.3-1.20040125.4mdk.i586.rpm: Unsupported scheme. Should I continue and try to rpm replace?? I have read the rpm docs since redhat brought them out but they intimidate me. I have been using Mandrake console (mcc). Thats easier for an old wore out non programmer.
  7. Each time I call up a man page I get the following error message: less.bin: Symbol `ospeed' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking How do I relink? what do I relink to?? I'm using Mandrake 10.0 and do not know when this problem started. Any help is really appreciated.
  8. Thanks, that was easy. The hard part is getting to think like linux. This "aint" got "nothing" to do with software. This is merely administration, setup, configuration or tips and tricks.
  9. when I double click on a .mpg file it opens in totem. I want to open all .mpg files with mplayer. can anyone tell me how to select the default application for defined extensions?
  10. I have a Dazzle fusion video capture dev. works great in xp, but I want to capture vhs to dvd using mandrake 10.0 Kino does not see the dazzle or I don't understand how to select the correct dev.
