  1. Hello all.

I just installed 2008.0 and it seems OK, but I have an issue with the

    Samba network performance on it.

I have a WD My Book World Edition (worst name ever). I have it mounted as

an SMB share, this is the line from fstab:

    //allonewordbook/ALLONEWORD /media/mybook/alloneword smbfs

    user,credentials=/etc/samba/

    auth.allonewordbook.alloneword,noatime,uid=alloneword,gid=alloneword,exec

    0 0

It mounts OK, and I have write access, but it is really really slow,

around 1 MB/s to copy stuff to it, and 2MB/s copying stuff of it.

But it only happens from my Mandriva 2008 box.

It is fast copying between my Vista laptopm and another Linux box I am

using and the My Book World.

NFS copying between my two Linux boxes is fast.

I am on a gigabit network, and everything is running at gigabit speeds.

Any ideas on what is capping the SMB speed on my Mandriva box?

    Hardware:

    AMD x2 5200+

    RealTec 8169 Gigabit Network Card

    Thanks.

  2. Try using the svn version or the tarball from mplayer homepage, get the full codecs package , I set up this way on a 2006 and work fine.

Yeah I tried compiling it from a tarball from the site. That is when I got this error:

    libmpcodecs/libmpencoders.a(ve_x264.o): In function `x264enc_set_param':
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x160): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x1f2): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x206): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
    libmpcodecs/libmpencoders.a(ve_x264.o): In function `config':
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x369): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    make: *** [mencoder] Error 1

A google search told me :

    <snip>

At one point my mplayer build failed in the linking phase with an error

message like undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'. This was because I

had only build a static x264 library, and the old dynamic library was

still lying around. The linker preferred the dynamic one and thus didn’t

see the newly built library at all.

    </snip>

But I am not sure how to get past this.

I installed x264 from a tarball on the videolan site.

    Thanks

  3. Hello all,

Has anyone managed to install MPlayer 1.0-rc1 on Mandriva 2006.0?

I can only find an RPM for 2007.

I have tried installing that and it complains about unable to find libx264.so.54.

I have compiled and installed x264 from source, from videolan.org.

    It created libx264.so.54 in /usr/local/lib

I added links to them in

    /usr/local/lib64

I have tried compiling it from source, but I have no had much luck.

It gets most of the way through the make, but dies here:

    libmpcodecs/libmpencoders.a(ve_x264.o): In function `x264enc_set_param':
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x160): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x1f2): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x206): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
    libmpcodecs/libmpencoders.a(ve_x264.o): In function `config':
    ve_x264.c:(.text+0x369): undefined reference to `x264_param_parse'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    make: *** [mencoder] Error 1

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks.

  4. Hello all.

I have spent the last few days trying to play a 3D game called Warsow. :wall:

It requires some statically linked files, one is:

    libXxf86dga.so.1

    The closest I have is:

    libXxf86dga.a

    (in /usr/X11R6/lib64)

I have installed all the devel libs for xorg:

    lib64xorg-x11-static-devel

    lib64xorg-x11-devel

    lib64xorg-x11

    All are version:

    6.9.0-5.10.20060mdk

One search result said I could try this:

    g++ -shared -o libXxf86dga.so -Wl,-soname,libXxf86dga.so.1 -Wl,--whole-archive libXxf86dga.a

    But I get this error:

/usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib64/libc_nonshared.a(elf-init.oS): relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against `__init_array_end' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/bin/ld: final link failed: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

When I try and find a package for libXxf86dga.so.1 I can't find any for Mandriva 2006.0.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  5. Hello all.

I have a question about Xine, when I finish watching something in xine, and

exit out, when I start xawtv the window is blank. I can hear the sound.

but the image isn't displayed. It is like xine isn't release the xv

overlay correctly, and xawtv isn't being aggressive enough and taking it

back. I can get around this by starting a movie in mplayer, which takes xv

overlay, then quite it, and mplayer gives up the xv control, starting

xawtv again, and all is well.

Any ideas on getting xine the give up control of the xv overlay stuff??

    Cheers.

    MDK 10.1

    xine: 0.99.2

    xawtv: 3.93

using what ever xorg came with MDK10.1 (6.7.0) video drivers are just

nvidia ones, (can't find exact version now)

  6. I tried installing acpi, this is what happened:

I installed ACPI, edit lilo.conf and added:

    append="acpi=force"

    to the entry for 'linux'

Booted up, and checked if acpi was running, it wasn't.

If i type acpi in a console I get this:

No ACPI support in kernel, or incorrect acpi_path ("/proc/acpi").

This is at the top of dmesg:

I am thinking acpi isn't going to work. The laptop is only used at home,

and doesn't have to have complete functionality, just turn the thing off

    when it is shut down.

Ohhh well, I don't think this is going to work. Despite some sites I've

googled (searching for compaq 1900) saying it worked fine for them.

    Thanks.

  7. Hello all.

I have recently installed 10.1 on to a compaq presario 1900-XL laptop.

The problem I have is I can't get a battery monitor to work, or for the

laptop to shut down properly. After getting to the end of the shut down

process, it stops on Power Down, and I have to hold the power down and

    then it will turn off.

In dmesg these lines come up:

Compaq 12XL125 machine detected. Enabling interrupts during APM calls.

    ....

    apm: BIOS not found.

In the bios I have made sure that power management stuff has been switched

    on.

When I run apm in a console I get this:

    No APM support in kernel.

I am using the default 2.6.8 kernel.

Can any one please help me get apm to run, thank-you.

  8. OK, I just installed 10.1 OE (installed over 10.1 CE (re formated /

    partition)

I had this same error in CE, and I never fixed, I just got around it so I

    could live with it.

The problem is, NO mixer will affect my PCM volume, ie. I can adjust the

master, others and sound levels play, but, the PCM slider does NOTHING.

    OK, I have tried:

    aumix

    alsamixer

    alsamixergui

    kmix

    the gnome mixer

    gkrellm

My sound card is a CM8738 (using the snd-cmipci module). Using the default

alsa server and stuff (what ever was installed when I installed 10.1 OE)

I havn't installed any extra sound stuff at all.

gkrellm's mixer is set to /dev/mixer

When I run xmms (used to just have sound playing while I tried stuff, but

it is the same for EVERY program that makes sound) and I select esd, sound

plays fine, but the mixers (mentioned above) make no affect on the volume

    of the play back.

I've tried going through esd, oss, alsa, and the mixers don't work with

    any of them.

I've gone through the trouble shooting thing in the snd stuff in mcc.

It all looked fine. there were lots of modules loaded in lsmod, snd-STUFF

What was interesting there was nothing inside /etc/modules.conf but the

modules had been loaded, so I am not worried about that.

    Google isn't helping much :(

    Any ideas?? Help please :)

    Cheers

  9. OK, I tried some new things today.

I can run multiple scp transfers at the one time. and all run at the same speed, never going over the 39kbs, but in totaling however many transfers I am running times the 39kbs.

I still have not found anything in any config that limits the speed, and I have tried using -l 500 on the command line when transferring stuff.

  10. When you say " when I try to copy the files back onto my computer " I'm assuming on your LAN...... to a windows box ??

    Nahh, to my linux box.

here are the details at the moment.

    scp - 39kbs

    NFS - 100-200kbs

    smb - 30-39kbs

    fpt - 39kbs

I have checked the config for ssh, sshd at both ends, and no where has it set the max bandwidth. Same for ftp.

It downloads torrents faster than it gives them back to me :) well except for nfs.

But I have had about 200kbs total downloads on torrents, about 4 or so torrents all at around 50ish.

But then it slows WAY down when I try to copy them back.

I have tried through my 10base hub, and through a cross over cable, didn't see any speed difference.

I am going to go and get a 10/100 card on the weekend and try that with a crossover. I have a 10/100 card, but the one in the BT box is a Realtek 8029(AS)

(The box was built from random bits I could find for it.)

    Cheers.

  11. Yeah, we down here in australia most of the torrents move at a very slow pace any way :)

But I have tried with both a torrent being that is still seeding (but complete), and with one that has been stoped before I copy the file out.

    Thanks for the reply

  12. Ok, I've set up my headless bit torrent box.

It is a rather modest box, just a PIII 800 and 64MB ram.

It is mdk 9.2 PowerPack but doesn't include X or anything. Just apache

with some mods like php and mysql. (don't ask about why I am using 9.2, it was my fourth install today, went through MDK10 OE, MDK10.1 CE, and slackware 10 (twice).)

The box itself seems to be working fine. Torrenting is working fine.

But when I try to copy the files back onto my computer it takes for ever.

I've tried transffering files through nfs, smb, and ftp (proftp).

When copying through ftp the speeds sits just below 50kbs (kilobytes),

    never going higher.

Through NFS it would jump between 50kbs to 200+kbs (but never higher than 300kbs) and the overall transfer time was that for transfering the file at the average between the peak and the lower limit (around 125ish kbs), smb was slow like ftp, never getting above 50kbs.

I've looked at top on the torrent box, and the cpu is about 97% idle when

    copying files.

(From a reply in another forum: the card is a Realtek 8029(AS), DMA is ON on the HDD.

I am also running WELL LOW on ram, but the swapspace hasn't been touched yet.)

    Does anyone have any ideas??

Another quick question, i am trying to kill a bunch of services at boot,

is it safe not to start kheader?? I am thinking it is, as the box is just sitting there, and I am not messing around with the kernel.

    Thanks.
