  1. Hey, I noticed the name under your penguin and then went to my favourite Australian newspaper site (www.smh.com.au - one of the biggest selling broadsheets in Australia) and there was "Sinterklaas". Check out the front page before they change it. Just in case you can't, here's what they said (and here's the photo too): "It's getting hot in here... Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa Claus, makes an appearance at Bondi Beach" Thought you might appreciate it :)
  2. Hey devries, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you (family, work etc :)). My friend is interested in getting Mandriva installed on his lappie, so I'm going to do just that. Now I know how to get Rosegarden up and running (if not fix the last problem - something he can play with :)) I'm sorted. Thanks very much for your assistance with this; it has been of immense help.
  3. If a picture's worth a thousand words then this is in a different language :) Okey dokey (and do I appreciate your assistance or what!) In qsynth setup, under the audio tab, I changed alsa to Jack. Changed the channels and audio groups to 20 each installed a soundfont I found on a free site (I have NO Idea what this is for or what it does or means) Then, see images attached... I dragged the audio thingo in MIDI across to the second window and you can now see the output in both MIDI and AUDIO windows in the attached jpegs :) NOW I HAVE SOUND! ... except I get a message from Jack saying: "Jack audio subsystem is losing sample frames" This results in stuttered sound. I've buggerised around with the thing - not that I know what I'm doing - but to no avail. and I get this message from qsynth: fluidsynth: warning: Failed to pin the sample data to RAM; swapping is possible. So... huge steps...THANKS... and some more to go... so close. I was so excited when sound started issuing from the speakers
  4. Okay, First things: did you know your penguin is taking acid?? :) Second: unchecked realtime - of course, as you suggested qjackctl works as normal user :) Great. Rosegarden starts up without any problems... whoo hooo! Third Qué? Do you mean literally to right click on the window "input device: hw:0" and then drag this to the icon for the speakers on my computer???? I know I'm sounding as if I don't know what you mean... I think this is because, urm, I don't... %) This is embarrassing, truly, because if that's not what you were suggesting, it's actually what I did... and it didn't work. If it is what you're suggesting, then ... HELP! :))
  5. Hey devries, Jpegs! (you show me your's, I'll show you mine - LOL) I'm going to post jpegs of Jack and Qsynth to show you what I'm looking at, but I'm wondering if the problem is not a littlle more prosaic. I can't play ANY midi files at all. I've just downloaded one and I try to play it with Kmid and though it THINKS it's playing the file, I get no output. URK!!! I've not tried to play a midi file before so what do you think???? qsynth_output.txt
  6. Hiya devries, Well.... jackcktl didn't work as root, but qjackctl does (???) qsynth works as root BUT rosegarden still give the same error message if I start is as 'user': "Attempt to launch JACK audio daemon failed. Audio etc etc etc However, when I start it was root is gives no errors :)) Now, I've not used Mandy for a while (I know, splitter! Traitor! Heathen! Manchester City supporter!!!!! :)) and so went to change the auto suspend to 2 secs so that. I checked the sound "test sound" - fine :) I checked "Test MIDI" and *nothing*!!! I suspect this is where the problem lies (Rosegarden now runs but I still get no sound issuing from the speakers). What gives with this MIDI thingo??? I admit I've never 'knowingly' used anything with a midi file, so any assistance or redirection with this would be most appreciated. I'm assuming there's somthing I need to do to make the soundcard play midi files??????? Ultimately this is all in the aim of installing Mandy on a friends lappie (as Rosegarden is part of the package in Mandy) and when it's available for my lower-status, not as impressive, splitters distro (is this enough self-debasement???) I can then get it up and running there too :) Thanks for your help. I recall you sorted out a problem in Mandy 10.0 for me too, so it's nice to know you're still around. Many thanks and much appreciation.
  7. Here's my post (in the event you'd like to see it :)) https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=29509&hl=
  8. Hi all, I've installed LE2005 on a P4. It has a: ICH2 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller Now, I can get sound etc. That's all fine. The problem is with running Rosegarden. I installed Qsynth and Qjackctl but.... Qsynth says it can't start without Jack and Jack says: ************************** 10:06:34.833 Patchbay deactivated. 10:06:35.201 Statistics reset. 10:06:35.329 Startup script... 10:06:35.330 artsshell -q terminate 10:06:35.486 MIDI connection graph change. 10:06:35.874 Startup script terminated with exit status=256. 10:06:35.883 JACK is starting... 10:06:35.914 /usr/bin/jackd -R -dalsa -dhw:1 -r48000 -p1024 -n2 10:06:35.947 JACK was started with PID=8044 (0x1f6c). jackd 0.99.0 Copyright 2001-2003 Paul Davis and others. jackd comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it under certain conditions; see the file COPYING for details cannot lock down memory for jackd (Cannot allocate memory) loading driver .. apparent rate = 48000 creating alsa driver ... hw:1|hw:1|1024|2|48000|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|32bit 10:06:36.169 MIDI connection change. 9. DOH! :)) Sorry spinynorman. Hey devries :) I'm going to start a new post - as my questions are becoming a greater part of this persons initial query, but can I ask SN... where does one acquire a soundfont from? I read in one post someone got there's from a SoundBlaster CD - but my sound card is an integrated Intel... As usual, any help, redirection or assitance will be greately appreciated. EDIT - Okay, so Google and Clusty are friends of mine who I've neglected :)) I'll make a post regarding Jack though... he's NOT a friend of mine at the moment.
  10. Hey Spinynorman. I'm trying to set up Mandy LE2005 on a P4. Sound if fine but I cannot get sound in Rosie :) Where on earth do I go to config Qsynt?? I'm testing this out as a friend wants to install Linux on his lappie (he plays with sound a lot) and has tried Ubuntu but couldn't get Rosegarden going on it. I'm suggesting Mandrake as he's new and wants lots of GUIs (man after my own heart). Any help or redirection would be most appreciated. Thanks.
  11. Hi BillATL, I’m considering installing Mandy 2005LE on my HP dv4000 (dv4121ap). It has the same Intel wireless card. I’ve not used Mandrake/iva :) for ages and was wondering if I could ask a couple of questions about your solution? Are wireless-tools version v27-pre23, And wireless-extension v16, already installed in Mandy or do they need to be downloaded/installed separately? I’m assuming I have to download the firmware separately :) The other bits I’m not sure about are: arc4 and crc32 Crypto Libraries in the kernel – are they installed already? CONFIG_NET_RADIO=y. – what does this mean? Where is it? I’m afraid I’m not clear about this either - where/how does one acknowledge the name? I apologise for the fact that I haven’t yet tried this. It’s a ‘working laptop’ (for Uni, for wife :)) and I’m just trying to minimise the downtime (she’s happy to have Linux on it, as long as it don’t have it away from her for long :)) Any assistance would be most appreciated and kindly regarded.
  12. Hi all, I know this is a frequently posted issue, I guess I'm feeling somewhat hopelessly confused today :( I've installed Man 10.0 before, and Firefox and RealPlayer and not had any problems. I'm not sure what I'm NOT doing this time. (I'm sending this from another machine so cannot remember the details exactly, but the following is pretty close) I installed the latest Ffox at /home/patrick/programs/firefox-installer/firefox Realplayer at /home/patrick/programs/RealPlayer/realplay (realplayer is the GOLD 10 bin file) Realplayer seems to work fine if I activate it from the command line or its icon, Firefox works fine too) Everything seemed to install fine. I've copied over the two nphelix files to the firefox plugins, I just cannot work out what to do next. As I said, I've done it before but I just cannot work this out today. Is it 'echo $PATH' then if I get something like '/usr/X11R6/bin' I should go: 'ln -s /home/patrick/programs/RealPlayer/realplay' ????? I know that this is tedious and I'm very sorry for that (and embarrassed - I feel like I'm losing the little Linux knowledge I do know), but I would appreciate some assistance with this. Thanks for any assistance provided.
  13. Brilliant. Thanks for that. The only other questions I have are (and should have asked the first time): 1. How do I work out what the current settings are (so I can always get back to them), or would going to the GUI mouse settings and choosing 'default' reset them? 2. Do I type 'xset m 1/8 1/8' as stated (as root) for example, in the command line? I realise this may seem like I don't know much about it (which is VERY true) but I do like to make sure of what I'm doing first. The first thing I remember from using Linux is "don't play around on your box as root, late at night, or when you've had little sleep" - a bit like the warnings on bottles of medication. LOL Again, thanks.
  14. Hi all, I have an odd request. In Man 10.0 the GUI for mouse speed only lets me change the speed to x 1.0. I'd like to make it slower than this. Is there away of doing this? I'm assuming that it will have to be via the command line, but have not idea of where to start. Any assistance/advice/redirection most appreciated.
  15. Hi, Installed Man 10.1, Ffox (latest) and then RealPlayer using the RealPlayer10GOLD.bin file. chmod'd and then installed. It works well on the www.abc.com.au site (Australian national broadcaster) site, but when I try to view the video at the www.smh.com.au site (Sydney Morning Herald - major Australian broadsheet) the image is broken by green lines and interference. I've tried a few other sites and it seems fine. I've tried the site using Winders and it plays fine in Realplayer. Anyone any ideas. I've modified the settings in RP to show my broadband speed, but can't find anything else to modify, change, etc. All help much appreciated.
  16. Steve, Thanks very much. You know when you just can't see the forest for the trees? I think I'll tell the kids I need more not less sleep :))
  17. Hi all, Can anyone direct me to where in the Control settings, in the GUI (KDE) that I can set the mouse speed. I'm lost and think I'm missing the bleeding obvious. All and any help appreciated.
  18. Well, thought I'd share with all that my Dolphin tablet (Aiptek clone) works perfectly on Fed Core 3. I couldn't not get it to work properly in Man 10.0 or 10.1. Very sad. In Fed Core, all that is required is to slow down the mouse! In Man .0 and .1, this helps to improve the operation of the tablet, but not to the same degree as it does on Fed Core 3.
  19. Hi Devries, I had a quick look at the Cinelerra site, they recommend: Dual 2.4Ghz Opteron 4GB RAM. 200 GB storage for movie files. Gigabit ethernet This seems like one big machine... are you running it on something similar, or can it run on less? (I understand that Kino will run on far less).
  20. Well, I have to say that unfortunately the solution that has worked is not the one I was hoping for. Changing the mouse speed made the tablet work better. Unfortunately, changing to Fedora Core 3 and altering the mouse speed meant that the tablet worked perfectly. Whilst I am happy that I can get my tablet working in 'a' linux distro, I'm sad that I couldn't get it working in Mandrake :( Wacom tablets, so I'm told, work very well in Mandrake 10.1 without any re-configuring. Unfortunately the one I've been trialling has to go home and I can't justify buying a new graphic tablet when this one works in FC3. The failure of my graphic tablet to work in Linux was the one thing inhibiting my exclusive move to Linux. Now it's resolved, but now how I had hoped it would be. As someone who is new to Linux, I would like to say thanks to people who have helped me with other Mandrake issues. I have appreciated the help and support enormously and it has certainly made the move far easier than would otherwise have been the case.
  21. Thanks for that. I like 10.1 except (as I've noted on another post) it doesn't want to play happily with my scanner - which works PERFECTLY in 10.0! Back to 10.0 I think and IDE. :) Thanks to everyone who posted.
  22. Ha-ha! (said it haughty stage voice). Well, didn't bloody work did it LOL This is what I can do... I can judge pretty much the area that is scans without risking mechanical damage. I can scan (final scan that is) and as long as I don't reach the 'point of possible damage', it's fine. I can then scan the whole page and then rescan the area I want. I just can't use preview scan... In summary, I can use the scanner, it's just not as functional as it is under 10.0! Very weird Well, I'll post a bug and see what happens. Very disappointing, as I had high hopes for my change to 10.1.
  23. Hi there again. I was just wondering if it is possible to UNinstall SANE from Mandrake 10.1 and then install the version I have in Mandrake 10.0. Would that possibly change how the scanner is being seen/used by Xsane/Kooka? Any ideas as to whether it would work? I've also just worked out that if I manually set the area to scan (don't do a preview scan) and then hit 'scan', I don't get the mechanical problem :) I'd rather not have to do that, however, which made me wonder if installing the earlier version of SANE would work.
  24. I haven't had any major problem since getting my speedtouch to work, but I don't really try to do anything clever. Also I don't want to spend all my time tinkering, so I tend to install every second release only. :) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ta for that. I guess I'm the same. I prefer to use my time 'doing something with the machine' rather than engaging in prayers with the Linux deux ex machina :) I think I'll take the advice to leave well enough alone and await 10.2 - unless I can get my scanner going in 10.1 - I hate to replace serviceable hardware (and my wife, kids and mortgage wouldn't let me anyway LOL).
  25. Hi there, I'm considering upgrading to a newer computer. I've noticed some people having problems installing on SATA drives and so am looking for some advice. I've noticed that many of them are now being offered with SATA HDDs and am wondering what the status of these is with Mandrake 10.0 Official? Are there some that work better than others? Are there any specific issues in relation to particular types of motherboards, SATA drives and Man 10.0? Are there some mobo/SATA combos to avoid/ aim for? Thanks.
