  1. Nvidia has a c header issue, ie it is missing it. Without this file nvidia won't compile the driver. Also, on my machine after the driver is compiled and installed I still need to modify the xorg.conf and modprob.preload files before nvidia drivers load correctly including glx.

Following once more the steps in sequence:

    1. Preparations:

    a. Make sure you have the proper kernel-source files installed, easiest is via mcc>software

    b. Get a copy of the pm.zip file mentioned earlier and unzip it to /usr/src/linux/include/linux

    c. Get a copy of the latest nvidia drivers for linux .6111 is the latest thusfar

    2. Start a terminal and enter 'su' without quotes to get root priviledges and provide the password

    3. Shut down your X server by entering 'init 3' or 'telinit 3' and login as root

    4. Change directory to where the nvidia installer is located and enter

    'sh NVIDIA-linux.x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run' without the quotes

5 Modify the xorg.file by entering 'vi /etc/xorg.conf and press INS to start editing

    a. change 'libglx.a' to 'libglx.so.1.0.6111'

    b. change 'vesa' or 'nv' to 'nvidia'

    c. press ESC and type ':wq' to safe the changes and exit the editor

    6. Modify the modprobe.preload file by entering 'vi /etc/modprobe.preload' and press INS

    a. add 'nvidia' on a blank line

    b. press ESC and type ':wq' to safe changes and exit the editor

    7. Reboot your computer.

    Good luck!

  2. AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K L2 90nm 939 pin

    Or

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 512K L2 90nm 939 pin or the 3000 for a little less (been shown w/ that mobo to hit 3500 speeds)

When I purchased my equipment I read many reviews on hardware especially cpu's. Test showed that AMD 64 +3200 cpu was the best value for your money. Like suggested before, I defiinately would spend my money on more and faster RAM than the CPU. In the top range, it only matters a slight increase in frame rates whereas faster and more RAM would almost double your rates. Easy choice I would say.

  3. I checked the versions and like mentioned before yes its the latest. I have tried them myself and they install correctly. However the issue I am getting is that with Mozilla-firefox installed, and set it as the default for html via config desktop>file associatons>html> moved mozilla-firefox to the top, i twont load properly. Two things:

    1. mozilla-firefox keeps asking at each load if it can be the default browser. I click yes, but the question keeps popping up again next time the browser is started.

    2. when clicking on a link in say an email, it wont open the browser and link, instead it produces an error saying it cannot open wiith a reference to a file in my users cache.

FYI, i installed mozilla-firefox after a clean install of 10.1 OE and after urpmi set using easyurpmi

    Suggestions anyone?

  4. Perhaps a thought to install firefox using urpmi :

    # urpmi mozilla-firefox

That will install the latest vesion of firefox and creates all the menu entries for you. If you want it on your taskbar, just right click on it and choose add application button and navigate to mozilla-firefox under web browsers.

    Edit:

I assumed you have the contrib urpmi setup correctly, if in doubt check your settings via easyurpmi: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

  5. - I downloaded a free program called CDBurnerXP Pro (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) to burn the iso's to CD. I would say that perhaps my problem lies here. Maybe this program didn't do a good job, but I also burned a Windows NT iso for another computer right after burning the Mandrake ones. The NT istallation was flawless, so I have ruled that out.

This i can rule out, I used this program and it did its job just perfectly and all the others i advised using it as well. It even worked for me where K3B failed.

Without knowing the rest of it, it sounds to me that ram is a little short, ie only 32MB. If it is that you cant put more ram into it, perhaps a suggestion to fall back to an earlier version of mandrake that is less demanding on your resources, otherwise i would surely put more ram into it.

  6. I cant help ya with the flashplayer other then adding that i managed to install it correctly. I am using Mozilla-firefox as browser btw.

With regard to your slow response this might have to do with IPv6 enabled. Ivan McCann has posted how to disable it. This is how he tackled it:

Ok, I had this problem. I have fixed it (at least for now) by turning off IPV6 support.

To verify you have IPV6 on, run ifconfig and look for `ipv6` on your main network interface.

To turn it off, su to root and edit /etc/modprobe.conf

Add this line at the bottom of the file:

    alias net-pf-10 off

Save, sync and reboot nicely. Yeah, I know its a windows kinda thing to do, but:

    service network restart

does not appear to do the trick. You are welcome to try. <IMG SRC="images/splatt_forum/icons/icon_smile.gif">

Once rebooted, my browsing sped up immensely. I watched my workstations network output and it appeared that my system was doing multiple IPV6 requests before using IPV4.  Removing IPV6 has improved my life. <IMG SRC="images/splatt_forum/icons/icon_smile.gif">  Its not a good long term solution, however. I will be watching for a proper fix.

    Hope this helps.

    Ivan

  7. You say you renewed, does that mean u had it before and it worked?

Waiting for Mandrake to reply to your request is like hoping to win the lottery soon, it ussualy doesnt..

I assume you checked your account and see if your hardware spec is uploaded and present and also all the other info in your profile is there, ie your account itself is active?

  8. i would assume you have diabled the service to start up automatically. Although im not aware what service you disabled, in general if you right click on the systemtry you can add applets or application buttons. I would look there if you can find the service you disabled. Another choice might be via MCC: Star>System>Services and see if the vital service you disabled is in there.

Question, did you have the eth0 before?

Also, please post your configuration, that will dramatically improve the chance you get the right answer to solve your problem

  9. Best thing to do would be a manual configuration of your network. It looks like you already did that. The hostname doesnt need any entry, also for the zeroconf field, just leave them blank. Once your internet connection is working properly you can move on to the network configuration. For that you need sambe, check the howto for clear instructions to set it up.

  10. Thanks for the reply AussieJohn, and fyi, i already tried to do that. I agree with you that it might be a permissions issue. My account is not root, whereas the disc i burned showed owner to be root. Also i noticed that there were permission differences compared to the cd and the new .Mail folder in my home directory but im not sure thats because of the cd-rom nature.

    Any other thoughts, anyone?

  11. Welcome to the club, and yes i am confident that other me and all the other users will do our best to help you. To answer your basic question: howto install software? u can use the mandrake control center: Star>System>Configuration>Configure your computer and select Software management.

Use this tool to install available packages that come with mandrake. You can also add additional packages to this library by using easy urpmi using this link http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

The site is pretty much self explanatory. Once you have set your urpmi to also use contrib and main pointed to a mirror in your vicinity you can add even more programs. In order to use that u can type in a console (most often as superuser or su).

You might want to read the howto's on that subject for more help. Another tip would be to familiarize yourself with some basic bash commands.

Finally don't forget to issue a search on this forum if you have any specific questions installing software. Most likely somebody b4 you already dealt with it.
