  1. Thanx, scrarecrow. I have HAL running. $ps aux|grep "hald" hal 8146 0.0 0.2 5124 3828 ? Ss 15:28 0:00 /usr/sbin/hald hal 8151 0.0 0.0 1864 592 ? S 15:28 0:00 hald-addon-storage I have everything installed for removable devices like HAL and pmount. Now Ubuntu does not even recognize my firewire hard drive. However my usb pen drive is recognized but not mountable. The following is the detailed error when I try to mount my usb pen drive mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Error: could not execute pmount J.T.
  2. I have Ubuntu Breezy on my dual MP Athlon with 1.5 gb of ram 3 hard drives (2 WD, 1 IBM), add-on firewire/usb2 card. I connect my LaCie firewire 40 gig hard drive to my box but am unable to access it. Ubuntu recognizes my LaCie hard drive when I check the devices screen. However, it does not auto mount or even put an entry of the drive when I click on computer under Places menu. Furthermore when I plug my flash drive into either the usb2 or usb1 port, Ubuntu put an entry into Computer but is unable to mount. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks, J.T.
  3. What kind of hardware do you have? AMD 32, 64, SATA controller,...? I have an Gigabyte AMD64 NForce4 motherboard with SATA controller. When I tried to install x86 32 bit Mandriva 2006, the installer kept spewing out "Disabling IRQ #10" or some other IRQ#. I had to disable both SATA controllers in order to install Mandriva. I have not tried the 64 bit version yet. Try Ubuntu. For me, I don't have the same problem with Ubuntu or OpenSUSE 10. Hope this help!
  4. qnoq, Sorry for not responding to your post earlier. That's the beauty of GNU/Linux. If you're not happy with on distro, you can switch to other. Regarding how to choose bootloader for Mandriva '06, on the installation summary screen at the end of the installation, you are presented with different options to configure your box like X, services, network, bootloader, etc. Hope you can give 2006 another try. I am using Ubuntu on my desktop box with software raid and 2006 on a portable drive booted off usb. J.T.
  5. How big is the new hard drive? It could be unsupported hard drive by the laptop. I had an Athlon mobo which does not support hard drives larger than 80gig or larger, and a Thinkpad 166 mhz which does not support 10gig or larger. I wonder if your laptop supports hotplug. You might damage the drive when you hotplug it. That means you plug in the drive while the system is on. Have you checked whether the drive is set as master or slave? For some old laptop DVD drive, it can be slow to boot up. J.T.
  6. What bootloader have you used? For me, it seems like LILO is not working with RAID. I tried GRUB, and it works fine. J.T.
  7. I wonder if you know how to use ndiswrapper, which loads winblow$ driver. Have you done any google search regarding your network card? Post hardware specs and model. JT
  8. I have 3 hard drives of different sizes but use LVM to make them into one big virtual hard drive. They are two different 80 Gig Western Digital and one 200 Gig Hitachi. I make them into one LVM volume then create partitions on it. With the exception that I reserve about 150 MB on the first hard drive for the boot partition so that I install the bootloader. J.T.
  9. Mandriva 2006 does not support NVidia SATA. I have a NForce 4 mobo with SATA controller on it. When I install both 2006 RC2 and 2006.0, I have the same situation as you have. I turn to one of the concole by alt+f2 I think. I see the message "disabling IRQ 10" and the whole setup is hung. I have to disable the SATA controller to get pass that error. I don't have this error with Ubuntu 5.04 and 5.10 and SUSE 10.0. I don't know why. I started a thread regarding this issue earlier. J.T.
  10. Those cheap raid cards are no good at all. They use the CPU to process the raid. I have a promise raid controller. Before buying it I did a little research about whether the card is supported under linux on google and promise site. I said to myself "Yea". However, after getting the card and doing a bit deeper research, I found out the hard way. The card was only supported in Redhat 9.0 with the driver downloaded from promise website. I went to kernel website and search on the archive and all the posts there said that the card was not hardware raid. It was software raid processed by the CPU via the driver. So, now I use the card as a regular add-on IDE controller. J.T.
  11. Hello Angel, IHMO, those software RAID is not worth the trouble. Unless you are willing to invest in hardware RAID like 3Ware cards, just use you SATA card as a regular IDE and utilize LVM (Large Volume Management I think)in Mandriva. I just set up a box with two 80 GB and one 200GB hard drives in LVM mode on a fake RAID card used as IDE controller. One warning though! You need to set aside a /boot partition on the first hard drive for about 150 MB at the very beginning of the hard drive so that LILO or GRUB to be installed. Hope this help. J.T.
  12. Hi all, I just got 2006.0 x86 DVD powerpack. I tried to install it onto a usb drive with an AMD 3700+ system. However, 2006 cannot get pass detecting an NVidia NForce 4 SATA controller. I hit alt f4 I think and see it says disabling IRQ 10. The installation just stalled. The box has 1 GB RAM, 250 GB SATA, and NVidia 6800 PCIE video. After I went in the BIOS to disable the SATA controller, the installation is fine. I have no problem with Ubuntu 5.04 and 5.10. I tried noauto and nodmraid option with no avail. I want to test X86 version first before trying the x86-64 later. I wonder if the x86-64 version will solve the problem. any suggestion? J.T.
  13. I think with ISA soundcards, you can have only one card at the time. J.T.
  14. Can you disable the onboard? I wonder. J.T.
  15. 10.0 is a bit tricky to install on a usb drive. You don't need expert mode to install 2006 on a usb drive. The installation should go as if you install it on an internal hard drive but choose the usb drive instead. The usb drive should be sdx (x stands for the letter of scsi device). If you have only the usb drive connect to the system, then it should be sda. After choosing the drive, partition as usual and install. After the installation, if you system is capable of booting from usb, then you just change in the BIOS to boot from usb as the first boot option. After booting from the drive, make a rescue boot cd so that you can boot the usb drive from systems that don't have usb bootable option in the BIOS. J.T.
  16. Actually, for installation of 2005LE, there will be some tricks to get the process going. You have to use alt1 to get the process going. 2006 is the easiest. You don't have to change the BIOS to boot from USB. Just boot from CD-ROM if you have 2006 CD's. During the installation process, just choose the usb drive I think will be labeled as sdx depending on whether you have other scsi hard drives in your box. I installed 2005 LE on a system with usb1.1 without usb bootable ability but was not able to boot from the drive. You can install 2006 using a system with bootable usb option in the BIOS. After the installation, boot from the drive, and then from the command line type #mkrescue -iso Burn this image to a cdr and boot the system from a non-bootable usb system. J.T. P.S. you need to have LILO installed not GRUB in order to create a rescue disk.
  17. I wonder why you want to install MOVE on a USB drive when you have 2006. 2006 can be installed on a USB drive without much trouble. J.T.
  18. What version of Mandriva do you plan to install? 2006 is the best for usb hard drive so far. I have tried 10.1, LE 2005 with so much trouble configure the drive to run. 2006 installation process recognizes the usb hard drive with no problem and 2006 runs wonderfully off the usb drive. I have a WD Passport 40 Gig drive. About half is for Mandriva 2006 and the other half is FAT32 for both winblows and linux. J.T.
  19. I only tried using ndiswrapper with mandriva 2006 RC2 and the card works fine. I have not tried with any other distro. So, I don't know. After installing the window$ driver, you need to configure the card by inputing SSID and WEP if your router is configured so. J.T.
  20. Get window$ driver package from linksys. Unpack it. When ndiswrapper asks for .inf file, pick any of the .inf file untill your card is recognized. That's is how I did for my pc card linksys wireless. J.T.
  21. I was able to install both 10.1 and 2005LE on a WD Passport 40gig usb drive but booting from it is another story. I have tried to boot from the laptop that I have used to install both versions to no avail. Now after installing 2006RC2, I have a globetrotter clone at much cheaper price. There will be systems out there that do not support Mandriva. I have tried my usb drive on some Gateway laptops, but these laptops have some hardware that does not support linux in general. The drive either does not boot or kernel panic. J.T.
  22. Are you having access to computers with USB boot option? If you do, you can make a rescue iso image using mkrescue. And if you have access to a cd burner, then you can burn that image to a cd-r and use it. I think the complete command for it as follows mkrescue --iso boot.iso Then you can burn boot.iso to a cdr using k3b or any cd burning software you like. J.T.
  23. I was able to install LE2005 on a usb2 WD Passport 40 gig without any trouble but booting it up is another story. I tried everything to get LE2005 to boot off my usb drive to no avail. Now, I am able to use the drive with 2006 RC2 on an AMD 64 laptop, a prostar 1ghz pIII, and school desktop systems. I had to install 2006 RC2 using a system with usb bootable, basically a usb2.0 equipped system, and then made a boot cd so that I can use the hard drive with usb1 systems. So, 2006 RC2 is running perfectly well with a usb drive for me. Hope this info helps. J.T.
  24. I wonder if earthlink does not support linux. Is your computer behind a router or hooked up directly to the modem? J.T.
  25. I install 2006 RC2 on a dual AMD MP 1200 with 1.5 GB RAM and 3 harddisks. two western digital 80 GB and a deskstar 200 GB using promise fastrack tx2000 without using raid. I set up software raid on the two 80 GB harddisk. After smooth installation, bootloader cannot install on any of the options presented. Errors either segmentation fault or 0x3f error. So no bootloader means no mandriva. Any suggestion? J.T. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
