  1. Follow - Up:

Found solution. Do not know why or how it works but it does.

Set file associations as you want them and at the CLI run:

    kbuildsyscoca - noincremental

Don't ask, I don't know. It has been working for me for a while now.

By the way, if anyone knows what this command does - do tell. :D

    Cheers,

  2. Actually the X600 is supported - just not out of the box. ATI Website

That doesn't mean that setting it up will be easy though. If you are interested you may want ot check out a tutorial on setting up ATI cards on Mandrake 10.1 here

I hope this gives you a little direction. As all of use ATI card owners know - ATI does not support linux very well at all.

  3. Good Morning,

I have been trying to set up a cron job for urpmi to update my sources (more an excercise in setting up cron jobs really) For learning purposes I am using Webmin to edit my cron jobs.

    This is what I have:

    /usr/sbin/urpmi.removemedia -a /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/updates/10.1/main_updates with media_info/hdlist.cz  /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia main ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/pub/linux/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz  /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz  /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/10.1 with hdlist.cz

This is the error I get:

    Output from command /usr/sbin/urpmi.removemedia -a /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/updates/10.1/main_updates with media_info/hdlist.cz /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia main ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/pub/linux/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/10.1 with hdlist.cz ..

    usage: urpmi.removemedia [-a] <name> ...
where <name> is a medium name to remove.
--help         - print this help message.
     -a             - select all media.
-c             - clean headers cache directory.
-y             - fuzzy match on media names.
     -q             - quiet mode.
     -v             - verbose mode.

    unknown options '--update'

Maybe based on what you see you can tell me why this is not working. I do not know, for instance, if you can place multiple command in a cron job (seems to me you would have to be able too) and if so, how do you seperate the commands? (ie with a ; or a , or just a space)

Finally, I know that webmin is just an interface for cron management, so it is adjusting an actual /etc/cron file, but I cannot find it in any of the cron directories. If I could see the actual file I am sure it would be helpful.

    Thanks again,

  4. Follow-up

Sort of answered my own question - I was able to alias postfix and root to the email address that I wanted. (If previous msg was regarding alaises - please disregard my last question)

Anyway - just to make things interesting - one more question.

I trying access this new local mail account through kmail and I keep getting the error "could not lock /var/spool/mail/user" and I do not understand why?

I know this may seem a little convoluted, please bear with me. Thanks.

  5. Thanks Dyslexic, I think the procmail file is better than the .forward file and will consider this.

Anon, I do have webmin installed and understand what you mean but I cannot seem to find where I would change that setting you mentioned. Is it under servers>postfix config or under system>users? I use webmin quite a bit...but there are so many options. Appriciate clarification.

    Cheers

  6. I am trying to get postfix to forward my root email to an outside pop3 account and it does not seem to be working. I have placed the .forward file in root's home (/root) and added the email address that I want it sent to (someone@somewhere.com) and then chmod 0600 the .forward file, but still all system mail (including other local users mail) is being sent to postfix@mymachinename.com...I am stumped.

No net resources I located could help me on this one.

As usual, thanks in advance. :D

  7. Very strange. I just tried it and, again, no net activity. Just stops at the end of the pasted command. Tried 10+ mirrors - there must be something else that I am missing.Everyother group plf and main etc. work perfect.

    :wall:

  8. Tymestream like I said we did all the steps. I even ssh'ed into his pc and looked at the XF86Config and I could see the fglrx as the driver for the card. Wouldn't start until I changed it back to "radeon".

I have one question though about the 24 bit for the vid settings. Should it be 16 bit instead? fglrxconfig only seems to give you a 24 bit option.

Of course I have really no idea what else to do. Like I said no warnings when installing the driver. He is running 10.1 also.

Maybe if you could post your XFConfig file that might help so I can compare the two.

    Here is my XF86Config:

  9. Try a different mirror. be aware that the contrib list is very very big compared to the others too, so leave it for an hour, it may not have hung

Okay. But I have tried many mirrors and I watch my bandwidth monitor and there is no activity. I will leave it for the remainder of the day.

  10. I have been using urpmi for a while now and ever since I started I have never been able to get the contrib hdzlist to download. It always hangs at retrieving hdzlist...

Has anyone else had this problem or know of a solution.

  11. Found solution. Do not know what this does but, just to close this topic.

In the file associations menu where you tell mandrake to open .htm or .html files with your browser ( in my case opera ) append %u to the end of the command.

    eg: /usr/bin/opera %u

This eliminates the problem and everything works great again.

Does anyone know why this is?

  12. Okay I have tried all the suggestions above and it seems that everything is working okay. Device mounts and unmounts at my request and fstab lines are not being deleted anymore. Final issue, I hope, the device seems to hang on large file transfers (100MB +) and my var/log/messages file is filled with this:

The files transfer simply stalls and gives a I/O error. Any ideas.

  13. I think it is part of usb thing.  When you plug in you usb drive Mandrake tries to detect and mount the drive automagically for you like in Window$.  So you don't have to enter a line for usb drives in fstab and mtab.  In mdk 10.0 and 10.1 CE, the auto-detection and auto-mounting work fine in my case.  But in 10.1, I am having a little headache.  Even though mdk 10.1 harddrake detects the drive as sda, but it does not auto-mount the drive.  I have to run the configure tool to mount, but it does not work after a reboot.  I have turned on hotplug for usb and firewire devices, but it still doesn't work properly.

    J.T.

I will try that as well, though I fear that it is a ongoing problem with 10.1 OE.

  14. Check your BIOS setup.  I had to turn off the option allowing BIOS to detect accessories (USB) and turn on the option allowing OS to detect accessories.  Untill I did that, the same thing kept happening to me.

That is interesting because I had heard the opposite - that setting the bios to detect devices made it easier for mandrake to see them. I will turn it off and see what happens. Thanks.

  15. I have been having some trouble with mounting a usb drive in mandrake 10.1 - as I have read this is not uncommon. My question is : Why does Mandrake delete lines that I place into my fstab? I set up my usb device and it works fine, I then remove the device, and when I go to use it the next time it says there is no entry in fstab or mtab for it?? It is a line that I manually entered and not one that MCC entered on my behalf - this seems very arbitrary to me. This would be like Mandrake not finding a CD in your cdrom drive and then removing that line from your fstab file. Very frusrating indeed. Any ideas?

  16. Very odd problem has started to occur - whenever I load my bookmarks, regardless of what browser is default, it seems to try to load the page from cache? It is really annoying and I am wondering if anyone else has this same type of issue or has a solution?

When I try to access a bookmark, this shows up in the address bar, sometimes the page does come up other times not.

    file://localhost/var/tmp/kdecache-jeffrey/krun/5009.0.

I think the problem is between Mandrake passing the link to the browser since following bookmarks from within a browser works perfect in all the browsers I have installed.

Nothing critical, but annoying none the less.

    Idea's?

    Jeffrey
