Sorry I have been so slow to respond to you posts. I have been distracted by an effort to build firefox 1.0 from source. In fact, this build process is where I stumbled upon the extraction peculiarity.
Aru: I am getting a "command not found" when I try ark with and without the help flag. I am using KDE 3.2.
More detail:
Extracting a small 1 MB bz2 file works equally fast whether I use tar from the CL or Konqueror.
Extracting a large 30 MB bz2 file works using tar from the CL and takes several seconds. Using Konqueror, I waited 30 min for the extraction process to finish and gave up.
-
(p.s. did you try using ark?)
Help me out here. Is there a command line to do this? Lots of googling is indicating that ark is part of KDE via the file-roller GUI??
-
I am using GuardDog 2.3.2. It is working fine on MDK 10.0. Give it a try instead?
Regarding your mouse. You can manually edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to change the mouse description. Unfortunately, you need someone more knowledgable than me to tell you what to change it to Try googling for more information......

ark?
Thats not fair, ark is not discussed in my O'Reilly Linux pocket guide. :D
Time to google for ark and learn some more....

I have downloaded a 30+ MB tar.bz2 file that I wish to extract. I can go to the command line with tar xvjf package.tar.bz2 and extract the files without problem. If I instead choose to be Windows lazy and open package.tar.bz2 file in Konqueror and copy, the extraction takes FOREVER. Why is this?

Do I have to use Linux compatible ISP?
I am a linux noob too, but I think this is BS. Your problem lies with your hardware somehow...
-
You will need the Login ID and password that your ISP gave you.
It might help to remove the ethernet card, you do not need it for dial-up.
-
Could it be that your computer hardware has some problems?
Try downloading a memtest boot disk (google for it) and run it overnight to check your RAM.
-
but in the options theres only 70 maximum
When you say this do you mean from "Screen Resize and Rotate"?
-
...anyone understand what this means, and will a reinstall fix it?
Maybe you should try to clear the CMOS on the motherboard. The manual should describe how to do this.
-
Login ID- i assume this is the same as Username on windows?
Password- I think this is the same as the password on windows
Login ID and password are for your ISP, not for windows
Why do you need an ethernet card if you are using dial-up?
-
Glad you were able to get firefox running!
-
Login ID and password are for your ISP.
Do you have an ethernet card and a modem?
-
Take the motherboard out of the case and assemble the computer with the bare minimum: video card, CPU, and RAM. Use this as your starting point. As pmpatrick says, does it POST?
What kind of motherboard and processor? We will need some details.

Delete the profile from your original mozilla installation.
Launch firefox and create a new profile:
$HOME/where-ever/firefox/firefox -profilemanager
-
This link gives instructions and a link to a RPM with MS fonts link
-
I have been thinking about making my own build. A little intimidating though.
-
Ahhh, I was looking for firefox instead of mozilla-firefox
Still, I already have up-to-date version of firefox running. I am looking to install a build which has been compiled with specific options making it optimal for my processor. Mozillazine has several individuals doing these 3rd party builds.

Well, based on your responses, I think I will abandon my project to hack and rebuild freetype. Thanks for the help.
-
memtest will check your memory's integrity
just because your RAM looks OK and is properly seated in the slots doesn't mean all is well
-
put the folder anywhere you like
a right click on the desktop will allow you to create a shortcut on your desktop , you need to link to "firefox" within your folder
you could also place a shortcut on your "start bar" uising menudrake
-
Are you sure your hardware is OK? Try running memtest overnight to check your RAM.

bvc:
You are speaking to a linux noob, and I don't know what LFS is. What are you suggesting I do with your linked file?
The website I linked to talks of hacking and rebuilding freetype to get around some Apple imposed limitations on conventional freetype. Do you think this is just a bunch of nonsense?
-
Thanks adamw. Your response reinforces information I was able to get from some googling. I will leave my glibc alone. I am trying to run some firefox builds which are optimized for my AthlonXP processor.
AI: I went to the site you linked, and looked through their list of rpms. I didn't see firefox listed. I am already running an official build of firefox 1.0. I am interested in running some firefox builds which are optimized for my AthlonXP processor.
extracting a tar.bz2 file

Ahh....It turns out kdeutils-ark wasn't even installed.
I have installed it. Running from the command line to extract firefox-1.0-source.tar.bz2 I get:
$ ark firefox-1.0-source.tar.bz2
