  1. Hey Kenton, I am having a heck of a time with these drivers... Want's kernel source and all... I get the 2D version, but not the full 3D accelerated ATI 9600 drivers... {sigh} But help is on the way with the nVidia drivers! Any tips, pass em on... looks like a couple of ATI driver threads going on right now... L8ter!
  2. Thanks for reading MY mind ... Got the same message, Kernel source is installing as we speak! Thanks! PS - still getting errors. in as su, but I am getting "Permission Denied ' when following the instructions the other fellow posted came up in the error message: *** WARNING *** Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system. You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module. Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh' in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository. (see readme.txt for more details.) Working on it... (grin)
  3. I just made an attempt on this... Freaky how this stuff works... gotta compile everything, and if you don't get it right it ... the it just *sorta* works... I am running Kernal 2.6.3-7mdk. Got this error message: *** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module. *** WARNING *** Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system. You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module. Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh' in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository. (see readme.txt for more details.) As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance. failed. *** Error: no kernel module build environment - please consult readme. Installed: qt3 (gcc 3.2) based control panel application === ATI display drivers successfully installed please run 'fglrxconfig' now === Time to get out to the Barnes N Nobles and get busy learning how to compile. Looks like it might just come in handy... (grin) Might just have to revisit the NOOB center here and see how to compile a Kustom Kernal. Oh yah - going to the referenced sub dirs and running the ./make.sh hasn't done a thing for me yet.... Working on it... It wasn't as easy as it looked! (LOL)
  4. Thanks to All - Just ordered up the eVGA nVidia 6800 from ZipZoomFly... Labor Day price was $278 no shipping! Chose eVGA due to the upgrade program - One time upgrade for the first 90 days - Just pay the diff in cost between the 2 cards. Guess that puts me about halfway to the 6800 Ultra! Check the eVGA site for particulars if you are interested... It will be just a little bit until I get the AMD 64 system... but at least I can use the new card in the existing Mandrake 10 system. Should be a pretty fun exercise to change out the card and drivers... (grin) I will do some searching for this exercise before I do it... (LOL) Too bad this isn't like OS2... Hey, maybe it's time to setup a triple boot system... bet OS2 would scream! I did see that ATI had no drivers for the Linux 2.6 kernal. nVidia does, so it was pretty much a lay down at that point. Thanks again for all the advice. Bet my screen savers will start to fly with the new drivers.
  5. Hello spiedra, 1) Interesting - I did see several "how do I get this Nvidia working" in the hardware area... and my ATI AIW 9600 installed and was recognized during install by the Mandrake 10 software... Hmmm.. I will do some more searching and perhaps change my plans... haven't ordered the video just yet so now would be a good time to put in the research. I appreciate the advice! 2) Yah, well I had to ask... I did point out that I squeek when I walk (LOL). 20% off the boxed AMD 64 version will help me for sure. I like your point of supporting the Linux cause (I did pony up for the Silver Membership) so it would be no stretch to go for the box WITH A MANUAL! That manual thing helps at times (grin). The competition has been good for MS, and I bet it won't be only $129 for Longhorn if it ever gets out!!! Thanks for the guidance. I appreciate it, and the spirit with which it is given ! Any other thoughts?!?
  6. Greetings to All from a total NOOB... Running on a Shuttle SN45G2 and an AMD Athlon. Looking to upgrade the entire system to the Athlon 64 939 CPU - Got a couple of questions... 1) - Looks like the ATI Video cards are the way to go - Currently running an AIW9600, looking to upgrade to the AIW9800 - Mandrake 10 installed no sweat on th3 AIW9600, so I reckon I should stick to what is working - expecially since I see NVidia reference in the FAQ, but didn't see ATI in there... Seems that ATI is the better platform at this time. Is this also true in the AMD 64 version of Mandrake as well? 2) I see that as a Silver Member I get a discount on any purchases... but can you get Mandrake 10 for AMD 64 in the "free open source" market? Yes, I do squeek when I walk, but I thought Linux was supposed to be *free* (grin) Any leads on this? Any other thoughts that might help me out are appreciated. {Edit} Oh yah - I will be getting the Shuttle SN95G5, AMD 64 3500+ 939S, 1 GB OCZ PC3200EL ram, IDE drives, Pioneer DVR 108 DVD Writer, ATI AIW9800. Any tune ups or suggestions here are also appreciated... Now you know why I am looking for the *FREE* version! TIA!
  7. Well, I got so disgusted, I installed RedHat 9.0! I am so smart... The RedHat actually *sucked* for me... Didn't see the network, wouldn't allow the ATI AIW graphics driver to install... So I just reinstalled Mandrake 10 - and voila! it's working perfectly now... go figure... perhaps the reformat of the partitions with RedHat, then Mandrake cleared out something left over from v9.2 In any event, thanks for the help! I am up and fully functional at this point. Anyone want to buy some RedHat ISO CD's?!?!? (grin) L8ter...
  8. Thanks for the hint.... That has already been done through 3 reinstalls or so... (grin) I will be sure to dbl check... any other thoughts?
  9. Greetings, Total noob - had mail working fine in Mandrake 9.2... heard some good things about v10, so installed it (several times now) and having some issues with the Kontact and Evolution mail clients Setup all of the apparent mail settings - Same settings used with Mandrake 9.2 "KMail" and get alsmost immediate failures! Kontact says - Unknown host pop.mail.com Evolution says - Error whild "Fetching Mail': Host lookup failed: host not found I figure that I missed something, or I am fighting a 'bug' that needs an update. I have been through the system config, and I am using the same info in all dialog boxes as appropriat for pop and smtp settings... Pretty confused right now... (grin) Anyone able to shed some light? TIA!
