  1. Bump again - come on, I simply don't believe that no-one knows where the wizard saves the changes to, or how to find out. I've already tried checking the logs, but they don't seem to reveal anything
  2. Have you tried actually printing anything? In my XP box, I often get an access denied message depsite the fact that I can quite happily print to the shared printer
  3. Thanks for all the help, I have been in touch with Palm and they have suggested that the cradle might be faulty. I will get that checked out
  4. This doesn't seem to work SoulSe - this option seems simply to be the ability to add owner information (the only option I can see is "owner" not "user") I did attempt this(based on what you said in the last thread - I wasn't ignoring you!) and no desktop client (windows or Linux) picked up the user. If you have any further advice on adding a user direct to the palm, then I would be gratefult ot hear it.
  5. Thanks, I'm coming to the conclusion that the palm might be defective. Last night I tried to get it working on a firends windows computer and I had the same results - could not add a user to the palm. I have no idea if I can get it fixed if the palm is broken :( My only hope is that windows XP could be the problem - I have not yet had a chance to sync with a non-XP windows machine. Does anyone know of any problems relating to Windows XP? I've already seen seomthing online but it said that the problem was resolved if you used Palm Desktop 4.1 which I am
  6. It is possible that the palm is defective, although before I had it, it was in regular user with my boss and he had no problems with it. I have done nothing to damage it since I've had it so... No problems arose before I performed the first hard reset. The hard reset did clear everything - the problem comes when I try to reinstall the user, it doesn't seem to want to work. I a mcurrently trying to complete this step on windows or linux (I periodically switch between the two to see if I can come up with something new). Ultimately I want to work with linux, but I'm kind of hoping that if I can get a username on there any which way, then I should be able to sync with Linux - I hope!
  7. My last set of posts on this subject ( see http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=1105 ) was getting a bit long - to summarise: I am trying to sync a palm Vx with evolution running on Mandrake 9.0. I have installed the absolute latest versions of gnome-pilot, pilot-link, evolution-pilot and related files that I could find. I am failing to sync at the very first hurdle - I can't set the username on my palm. I have tried via the wizard from gnome-pilot and via install-user. The furthest I have got is the palm telling me that it has connected and is trying to indentify user, but it get's no further than that. I am getting sooooo frustrated - especially since I hear so many people saying they got it working first time - what's wrong with me!? Any help would be very, very much appreciated - I am at my wits end!

    X-Windows Managers

I would hope that what I have since said may be of more help - plus if AA actually tried and liked some other window Managers then I think that would have been helpful

    X-Windows Managers

Another option is to use run level 3 (where you log into text only mode) which is better anyway. You could then install Xtart which lets you choose which WM to use when you start X - this way you could still have your choice of WM depending on how you feel. If you have mulitple users - your files will be in diefferent /home/ directories You can change to run level three by going to the boot settings in DrakConf and setting it to NOT start X at boot time
  10. I was going to bump this, as I figured someone, must have a clue where the wizard writes to! It doesn't look like it's got all that far down the forum though. I guess this bumps it anyway! :D

    X-Windows Managers

Or you could just try soem other windows managers - KDE is not necessarily the best you know... Fluxbox?
  12. Quote from the Palm V manual: I have performed a hard reset on my palm and attempted a HotSync (have repeatedly tried with both windows and Linux) but I am NEVER asked to give it a new name. As a result it does not havea name. As a result (I assume) I cannot perform a syncing operation. Anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this?
  13. I have already done a hard reset on the palm to get where I am now - previously the user had been my boss, who gave me the pda. I thought that owner information was simply to specify contatc details in case I ever lost my palm. Reading throug my instructions it seems to say that the user is established from the desktop. Either way, I added my name in that space and I still can't sync :(
  14. Is that not likely to protect any data in case it gets "nuked" by the sync? I will try that although I doubt I will be able to perform a backup - it seems impossible to get a username onto the palm - even through windows. I think it is supposed to ask for it during thefirst sync, but it doesn't. I'm not entirely sure why this is, but I'm becoming fairly sure that all my problems stem from not being able to get a user onto the palm. I have tried running install-user but it simply didn't work. It's as if the palm doesn't expect to need a user.
  15. By the way - I am using a serial cradle, but I was under the impression that this was the easiest way to establish a link
  16. Ok, I suspect that the problem lies with not being able to perform the first sync with the palm. I therefore have no users set up on my palm. I cannot get this to work with any of the linux tools, so I trying to get this initial step performed in Windows. Once I have a user on the palm, I will try to sync from linux again. The problem is that I can't figure out how to do it from windows either :) I have read the manual and it says that I should enter a new user after I have pressed the HotSync button - I've tried that, but it still tries to connect with no User. Any tips on this step?
  17. Alternatively you could simply use firestarter instead of shorewall (although you will need iptables now I come to think of it)
  18. OK, I've tried to PPP to the palm and, while I didn't succeed, I did get as far as the palm trying to authenticate. This leaves me to believe (hopefully no wrongly) that there is nothing wrong with my physical connection. I am still a little bemused as to why I cannot sync my palm with my desktop. I have tried syncing with kpilot, jpilot and gpilot. It is the latter that I woukld prefer to use simply because I would like to sync with evolution. What could be going wrong here?
  19. AAAARGH! This is so frustrating! It seems like other people are getting this to work without having to do any config, but I simply can't get it to work at all. Gnome-pilot and the evolution conduits are installed. I try to run gnome-pilot-control-center but it says that there id no device available - even though there is a palm Vx attached to the computer via the serail port! The serial port is enabled in BIOS (I saw another post where this was one guys problem. What else can I possibly do? Someone - please, please help me. I have tried finding how-tos on the web, but have found absolutely nothing useful
  20. Does the Samaba Wizard in DrakConf write to /etc/samba/smb.conf? I have run through the wizard a couple of times and it has set up my server perfectly, but, as soon as I restart the computer - I lose it all. How can I persist the results of the wizard accross restarts?
  21. Also, any tips on getting gpilotd to start at startup? I would have though this would be automatic, but it doesn't seem to be
  22. OK, all the counduits for evolution are installed. I have hard reset the palm so everything is "virginal". Only problem now is that I can't run the wizard to set up a user on the Palm as it's already been done. Is there a way, short of uninstalling and reinstalling gnome-pilot, to clear this so I can start again? I am assuming that this is the only reson it's still not working
  23. Ok, I tried kpilot and it didn't work :( It got as far as identifying the user but no further I tried running gpilotd (for some reason this isn't automatically added to the system services to be started at startup). This didn't seem to even get as far as kpilot. I am begining to think that this is a security issue - my boss has let me have his palm Vx and it still has some of his settings on it - including user and password. I imagine this would affect things? How do you set things like that right?
  24. I'm trying to sync my Palm Vx with evolution and having very little success. I havetried running through the settings in evolution, but have had no success. I read here that someone had succesfully synced a Palm and MDK 9.0 (which is what I'm running) with no setup - this is what I want to do! Any suggestions?
  25. Although the turn of conversation here has become slightly off topic, I have to say that I wasn't digging at you - I actually agree that it would be fantastic if there were more native Linux games. Let me formally add my voice to the rebellion - Boycott WineX!
