  1. I have a printer installed on my Linux desktop that works absolutely fine (HP DeskJet 5550). I want to be able to share it with other computers on my network - one Linux and twop windows machines. As I'm sharing with windows machines - I figured the best way was to share to everything via samba. So I began to merrily set everything up and it all seemed to be going fine - all the network computers could "see" the printer and installed it and acted as if everything was fine - but they can't print. Again, the remote machines act like it's all fine asnd as if they are printing - but nothing ever get's through. CUPS does not even register the new jobs. I have checked to see if my firewall is getting in the way - but it really doesn't seem to be: I still get the same problem even when the firewall is switched off Any suggestions - I reall need to get this printer shared - my wife's final year project is due in a couple of days and it would be MUCH easier to be able to print it at home!

    Printer problem

OK - I've moved the printer to my main desktop since my server simply wouldn't print anything sent to it from over a network - CUPS wasn't even registering new jobs. I wondered if it was to do with the computer. Still can't print from over the network - so I tried to browse to localhost:601, and was informed by my browser that this port was disabled for security reasons. 1) How do I re-enable this port? 2) Could this be why I can't print over a network - port 601 is for CUPS right?

    Printer problem

I guess I could give a few more details about my setup Printer: HP DesktJet 5550 - connected via a parralel cable Shared via samba to two wndows laptops and one Linux desktop At least two of the machines (I haven't checked the third) can see the printer and act as if they have it installed - but absolutely nothing get's printed when I try to print from them - the printer doesn't even flinch!

    Printer problem

Making progress - the server can now print to the printer - but none of the other machines seems to be able to. They can all "see" the printer over the network and even install it - but all prints simply fail. Anyone help? It's no good having the server able to print if it can't share the printer! Edit: There is a firewall running on the server - but I have checked that this isn't the issue by switching it off and testing to see if I could print - I still could not

    Printer problem

I have just spotted another error: lpadmin: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused Could not set up/change the queue "Printer"! foomatic-configure failed at /usr/lib/libDrakX/printer.pm line 1495. That line reads: @{$printer->{currentqueue}{options}} Does this shed any light?

    Printer problem

This is almost definately NOT a hardware problem - I jsut bought a new printer (my boss was paying so I figured I might as well  ) and I get exactly the same problem. Is this "lpstat: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused" likely to be the cause? What would cause that? It would be a real help to me if I could figure out why I can't print anything.
  7. BTW - what PGP plugins are you using for outlook?
  8. sent you something using gpg from evolution - let me know if you got it
  9. Kmack, I have found a gpg plugin for outlook. I tried it and fuond it was ok - to a point, maybe you would have better luck. http://www.openpgp.fr.st/courrier_en.html Also, I tried downloading PGP from PGP themselves - and it looked like it might work well - except that to really get anything out of it beyond basic file encryption you would have to buy a license, which seems a little unecessary for this context :)
  10. There is an option like that - but I deliberately looked at the encrypted version to confirm it was using your key. The thing that interested me was that it used your secondary key - not sure if this might cause an issue
  11. Not elegant at all! The ideal is if we can both figure out how to read and write encrypted emails with the email clients we use. The odd thing is that if I send myself an encrypted message it works exactly as expected, but not when I get an encrypted message from you - although that may be to do with the email address you used. I guess we can figure that out when you've worked Kmail out! :D
  12. I have just looked at the emails I sent you in my "Sent" folder and I can't read them because they are decrypted and it is using your key - although the secondary one, not the primary one. I don't know if you get to choose which key to decrypt with or if it is automatic
  13. I tried to use Kmail, but the encryption button was greyed out in the message window - I could not select a key at all We will figure this out - let's keep trying
  14. can you try sending again from the other email address please?
  15. Hmmm - there was never any option for selecting a key when I sent to you, I figured it just used the key associated with your email address. Did you ever succesfully read my encrypted mail?
  16. I noticed that the decrypted message that you sent was from a different email address than the one in your key - maybe this is what has confused evolution so that it is not decrypting Anyway - in the meantime, enjoy the lightning!
  17. I was able to decrypt via seahorse though, so I read your message, which is progress at least :)
  18. I got your email, but it wasn't decrypted - I can only see the encrypted text as plain text, which isn't much use. I can see that this will require a bit more experimentation on our part
  19. kmack - tried to send you a mail and encryption wouldn't work it. I pasted your key in to a text file called KMackKey and ran gpg KMackKey This seemed to work in that I saw the details of your public key. However, when I tried to send you an encrypted email with evolution - it complained that it couldn't find a key for your email address. I'm really not sure why this happened - I followed the instructions in the evolution help exactly and it was seeming to work right up until I tried to send the encrypted message Any ideas what I did wrong? I'd love to figure out how to get this working
  20. I ahve generated a set of keys - one public and one private- can't remember if I used RSA or not - which one is the default?
  21. Thanks - see you in the morning :)
  22. I've recently been trying to set up PGP encryption & signing with evolution. So far it seems to have gone well - I've been able to send myself as couple of encrypted messages and then read them - not all that exciting though really! My questions are: 1) is GnuPGP compatible with normal PGP? i.e. if I send email to someone using outlook, or whatever, wil lthey be able to use that implementation of PGP to talk securely to me? 2)In order to test that I have done this properly in a better way, it would be helpful if I could interact with someone else using encrypted email - can anyone let me have their public key so I can send them an encrypted email? You can pass it to me via a private mesaage if that would be prefered. Thanks in advance

    Wolfenstein 3D

Anyone got this working under linux yet? I found a linux port - but the install instructions are rubbish. I got it here: http://wolfgl.sourceforge.net/ BTW - I have the commercial version, not the shareware version - which might be partly why it is a bit more challenging to get working as I assume that the shareware version has a lot of the data files included
  24. BTW - the dock app I use for this purpose is wmappl - and it does the job very nicely
  25. If you really want icons on your desktop - do you really want fluxbox? You can download some dock apps that can launch your favourite applications and they sit very neatly in the slit thereby keeping your desktop free of clutter - the way a fluxbox desktop should be :D
