Need some help getting a program to work with Wine
phunni replied to a topic in Virtual Machines and Emulators
doing a simple search for "tablature editor linux" will show you some linux alternatives - maybe you don't need to get powertab working under wine... -
I have a samba share set up and working and included in my /etc/fstab I would like to be able to mount this share as a normal user and also to be able to read/write to it. At present I can only mount it as root and it is read only. The entry in /etc/fstab is as follows: //livingstone/C /mnt/livingstone smbfs user,credentials=/etc/samba/auth.livingstone.paul 0 0 Any suggestions anyone?

OK - I have installed blackdonw 1.4 to see if it runs any better than Sun's VM I followed the instructions for installing the plugin - i.e. made a symbolic link to <JAVA_HOME>/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins but now galeon cannot display java applets - it says it can't locate the plugin. I assumed (based on expereince with othe plugins) that galeon simply used themozilla plugins. Should the plugin have a specific name? Edit: never mind, I have returned to Sun's VM as I didn't notice any significant performance improvement with blackdown's - all work's well, if a little slowly :(

I want to recompile the multimedia kernel
phunni replied to phunni's topic in Command Line, Kernel and Programming
I figured I might have a go at this and have downloaded the kernel source and two patches (low latency and pre-empt. I have, however, two questions that I cannot find the answer to on the internet: 1) How do I actually apply the patches? :) As I say I have downloaded two, but they came with no documentation and I can't find any help on the net 2) If I've lost supermount (which I'm not too sad about) how do I go about switching it off to avoid the "not supported" error messages? -
Sun's Java. Have blackdown ported 1.4 yet?
-
Thanks - already use fluxbox and have for ages. I will try and find out about optimising services though

Does anyone know where to get the source for the mandrake multimedia kernel? It was on contrib (I think) when I actually installed the kernel, but doesn't seem to be now. Also when I am recompiling the kernel, what kinds of things MUST not be modules - examples would be helpful. I want to try to make the leanest kernel that I can. Also, previous attempts to recompile the mandrake kernel have resutled in supermount not working - which surprised me as I was using a mandrake source package. How can I get round this?

I run Java software/applets quite a lot as my job is a technical trainer - primarily working with Java. I have discovered that on my desktop, running Java applications and applets simply seems to much for my system. Now, I am aware that Java can be a memory hog and, because of the VM, runs a little slowly - but with 128MB of RAM I should be able to load and run simple applets. Is there a way of optimising my system - short of buying more memory, which I actually can't afford to do - that will help with this problem. I am running the latest Multimedia kernel from textar

I read somewhere on this site (I can't find the post - just didd a search for it) where someone was asking about how much memory the Linux kernel could handle. The thread seemed to be suggesting that over a certaim amount of memory (256 or something like that) all memeory was imply used for caching - is this true? I must admit that this sounds a bit odd - so I hope someone is going to correct me. I do see that caching wouldbe very useful in restarting apps - but it also seems to me that running apps may be very memory hungry too
-
It probably is obvious - but it didn't occur to me I am using the es1371 driver - is this fully duplex?

Hmmm - it looks like realrekord isn't finished enough yet :( If I try to run a shceduled recording I am told that it's not implemented yet, and if I try a straight recording then I get audio via realplayer, but nothing is recorded. It looks like a good solution though - I'm not sure if it's not ready yet - or if I'm doing something wrong
-
Streamripper sounds like it is for MP3. I looked in contrib and plf and found realrekord in plf which may be a solution. I also need some way of setting what time it should start/finish recording
-
Turns out that I can record to a hard drive as I have a USB hard drive that I can mount very easily - I thought that it wouldn't work for some reason. It has to be via realplayer as this is the only format I can get these streams in - I can't listen to the rugby any other way that I am aware of
-
Is it possible to record audio that is streamed from the interent via something like reaplplayer? If so, can it also be recorded onto something other than my hard disk? I regularly listen to English Premiership Rugby via the internet and it would be quite helpful if I could sometimes record a game. The reason I ask about something other than my hard disk is simply that I don't have all that much space on my hard drive and I expect that 80+ minutes of audio would take up quite a bit fo space :D

I guess we're getting a little off topic - but it' my thread so who cares? It does annoy me the way porn popups can appear at almost any time - what if a little kid was looknig for game cheats? My wife was looking for something on the internet and, for the first time, fell foul of porn popups - this helped my case dramatically Glad you got it sorted with your girlfriend :)
-
Solved it - I looked on the internet and, while deliberately avoiding porn, I noticed that some people where saying that this only worked for them if they laoded into a saved game. I tried it and I appear to be one of those people

I've just realised that my above edit probably doesn't notify anyone of change - look at my post and help me! Edit: Please

Whenever I try to run a help from a gnome app, gnome-help crashes. On further investigation this seems to be a yelp problem. Whenever yelp is run it complains about not being able to run yelp-base because of a no such file or directory error. I cannot find yelp base anywhere. Anyone able to shed some light on this?

I wondered about that - but I really don't know what files to adjust permissions for. Edit: plus - did you ever actually adjust any of the files on your computer? Where did you install the game - I have it in /usr/local/games/wolfenstein - is this the same for you? If so it seems unlikely to be a file permissions thing
-
AAARRGGHH - how frustrating! I have upgraded from 1.4 to 1.4.1 and I have also entered wolfsp +set sv_cheats 1 and it does not work for me. If I try to do it in the game using /sv_cheats 1 them I am told that sv_cheats is read only - why does it work for you but not for me?
-
I did this exactly again this morning and it didn't work - sv_cheats is still set to 0. Is it possible that punkbuster is affectign the single player game - or is it purely a mp thing? I'd really like to get this working - especially as it seems possible and there isn't an obvious reason why it isn't working for me
-
I'm not married to you and I don't believe you either... That's OK - I don't really need you to. My wife knows me pretty well - so I think she does believe me
-
Hmmm - I tried exactly this and it didn't work - sv_cheats was still = 0 Perhaps I did something wrong - I'll try it again and post my results tomorrow
