  1. Yes, I can print a test page from the printer. Cups claims to see the printer, but this is difficult to verify... I'm not using mdk or KDE... This is on my server so there is no X anyway...
  2. I have a printer connected to my server via a parallel port. dmesg | grep lp returns that lp0 is on parallel0 I have parport, parport_pc and lp loaded as modules. I have been trying to configure the printer via the cups browser interface. None of this works at all and I get no error messages in any of the logs! Can anyone suggest a way forward?
  3. There isn't anything in modprobe.conf - what kind of thing should go in there...?
  4. I'm trying to set arch up and get my clie syncing. The difference is that I'm using udev now, which I never have before... I've followed everything I can find about setting UDEV up to get my clie working - and creating a symlink to /dev/pilot The relevant part of my udev.rules is: #Sony Clie BUS="usb", ID="2-2", KERNEL="ttyUSB*", SYMLINK="pilot" And my udev.permissions is: # pilot/palm devices pilot*:root:root:0660 The (relevant) result of udevinfo -p /sys/class/tty/ttyUSB1 -a is looking at the device chain at '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.1/usb2/2-2': BUS="usb" ID="2-2" SYSFS{bConfigurationValue}="1" SYSFS{bDeviceClass}="00" SYSFS{bDeviceProtocol}="00" SYSFS{bDeviceSubClass}="00" SYSFS{bMaxPower}=" 2mA" SYSFS{bNumConfigurations}="1" SYSFS{bNumInterfaces}=" 1" SYSFS{bcdDevice}="0100" SYSFS{bmAttributes}="c0" SYSFS{detach_state}="0" SYSFS{devnum}="12" SYSFS{idProduct}="00da" SYSFS{idVendor}="054c" SYSFS{manufacturer}="Palm, Inc." SYSFS{maxchild}="0" SYSFS{product}="Palm Handheld" SYSFS{speed}="12" SYSFS{version}=" 1.00" can anyone show me where I'm going wrong? Nothing appears in dev when I press the button and I do have the visor module loaded
  5. Let's not get over excited :D It's just an experimental install to see if I can get everything working how I like it. Windows is still my primary desktop OS. I'm going to put together a spreadsheet of things I need to get working before I can go back to Linux only... I might even post it online so that you guys can give me some help!
  6. Posting this from within Ubuntu - first impressions are not bad, althoguh I don't like a lot of the defaults. I know the distro is supposed to be a gnome distro but how easy is it to install something like fluxbox or xfce4? Despite recent rumours to the contrary, I don't really like gnome all that much...
  7. Just out of interest, why is using XML configs bad?
  8. I never hated them as much as I now do until I'd experienced something else...
  9. nope - I hate RPMs, one of the first things I felt when I switched to a non RPM distro was enourmous relief. I have no problem with getting my hands dirty with configs - been doing it for a ges. All I want is something that works as it should (even after updates...) and something I can set up so my wife can easily use it. Edit: I downloaded ubuntu last night - maybe I'll ahve a crack at that soon. Windows will remain my main dekstop OS for the forseeable future though...
  10. OK - I admit it. I'm getting ready to download a distro to put on my spare hard drive. If I can get everything working how I like it - and set up so my wife can use it, then I'll consider putting it back as a main distro. So question is - which distro should I choose? I might try mandy again since it might make life a little easier for my wife. I really fo hate RPMs though... Did I hear something about being able to use apt...?
  11. Just to say that my problems were nothing to do with compiling anything! I suspect it's a hardware conflict. Plus you spell phunni with an i... Plus, I'd been running somthing like gentoo or arch for ages before returning to windows (mostly for my wife's (and therefore my) sanity) - so it's nothing to do with running for cover at the first sign of a problem! Plus - I'm still here! Don't talk about me as if I'm long dead or something!
  12. post your X config - it will be in /etc/X11 and either be called xorg.conf or XF86Config-4 depending on what X server you are using
  13. I do play the occasional game though - so 3D has always been important to me... Plus - figuring out the lockups eventually isn't acceptable because it also inconvienienced my wife. I'd far rather still be using Linux, but it just wasn't practical. I'm sure I'll return to Linux eventaully - but I doubt it will be all that soon...
  14. And, if I was the only one using my PC (and not my wife as well) I would still be a windows user. But the time it (sometimes) took for me to get things working was more of an inconvinience for her than just me. When I finally had the problem with X locking it was too big a thing and too important a thing for her to be without a PC for the time it would take me to fix it. Therefore I don;t use Linux on my home PC anymore - but I'll never use anything else on my server...
  15. Very sad.... But its a sad fact there doesn't seem to be any CuBase equivalent etc. in Linux. for instance. Dual booting sucks, or more accurately sucks up time. I know music is important to phunni so perhaps if/when we get the linux equiv phunni will be able to chosse a single OS for everything. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Music is not only my life, but how I make a living as well. I use Linux for all my sound production between Hydrogen and Audacity I have pretty much everything I need. There are other great projects as well. CuBase SX and the like are obviously in a different league, but they are also full of features that nobody uses. Audacity has all the basics I need plus many plugins that can be downloaded to achieve most things. I have no Windows partitions on any of my computers and am also installing Linux on my computer at work now (just got permission). There is nothing Windows can give me that Linux can't except a headache and a cramp in my arse. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I could never get a set up like that working properly... Hydrogen was always fabntastic, but with out decent audio editing and sequencing (which I could never manage) I only had drums! (albeit absoutely cracking drums ;) )
  16. OK - I've backed up my Linux home directories so I can easily return to Linux. I reckon a few months (weeks?) with windows will do me good - probably remind me why I love Linux so much... I have to say though that I've had less problems with my windows system in the past 6 months or so than I have with Linux - that's jsut my honest experience. To be fair, though I have used the Linux box about a hundred times more... BTW - it's not source vs rpm for me - pacman is a binary installer. It's not debs either. I just never got on as well with an RPM based distro (and i've tried a few) as I have with a distro that uses something else. Nothing to do with feeling more "expert" it's just my experience of rpms and other packages - I have largely bad RPM experiences and largely good pacman ones (also liked emerge on gentoo - mostly...)
  17. I have absolutely no doubts at all that linux on the server beats the pants out of windows every time, but I keep running into problems - mostly with X (xfree and xorg) Now, it's probably largely down to the fact that I've got an ATI card and not an Nvidia one - but it would be cheaper for me to install windows (already have a license) than to go out and buy and equivalent Nvidia card. I have a top end card - 9800 pro Also, I have forced Linux onto my wife - mainly because it's my computer and I didn't want to run windows - but she gets very frustrated (as do I) with things going wrong or not working as she expect them to and with freqent X lockups which can only be fixed with a reboot - not even windows is going down as often as linux as the moment. I can't fix it either... I have tried a number of distros and I really don't want to go for a rpm based one. I like arch in many ways and pacman is great, but I just can never get to a state where everything works exactly as it should - and that's frustrating me. I like linux and, as I say, will always run it on my server - so I won't be completely leaving the fold...
  18. I'm thinking fairly seriously of going back to windows as my main desktop OS I've just been really fed up woth various annoying problems I've had in Linux recently. The distro that by far I prefer (arch) has a not enourmously helpful community, meaning that it's a struggle to get help, unless someone here can help me or unless I switch distro - which I really don't want to do. My experience of linux over all is that is hasn't been much more stable than windows as a desktop operating system - although there is at least a smaller virus risk... One of the things I like about linux is the tweakability, which you don't get in windows - but that might be good to help me spend less time on the computer... I hate MS - but more because of their business model than their software directly. I use it on my laptop anyway, so that's not much of a reason. I'd still use open source stuff like firefox, eclipse thunderbird (I guess - unless there are any better suggestions for email clients on windows...?) I'll still use linux on my local lan server, but not sure about my main desktop... So - come on, convince me I'm being silly!
  19. Your X config isn't set up properly. Either use drakconf to try and sort it out (should be doable on the command line) or, if you know the details for your monitor, mouse etc you can run xconfig and see if you can get it set up that way. If you find that the config asks you for detaisl you don;t knwo then you can always ctrl-c and find out before starting again...
  20. On one of the old boards, there was a how to written (I believe) by Tom Berger on this - does anyone know where it is as I remember it being pretty good and might be a good way to get me started...
  21. An install of Java 1.3 would (as devries suggested) casue those problems. One of the difference between java 1.3 & 1.4 was that the latter includes the XML classes where the former does not. So if you have 1.3 and have not added the XML jars then you will get ClassNotFounds... Upgrade to 1.4 or download and copy the XML classes onto your classpath - a simple download of xerces should do it. Although you'd be better off upgrading to 14. - or even the fantastic 1.5...
  22. Recompiled the kernel and it all seems fixed now - thanks for all the help!

Devries: I'd alrteady seen that article and thought it looked helpful. The only area I stumble on is where says to patch the X Server. Obviously I can download the patches, but I'm not certain where i need to run them from. I know from attempts (with varying results :D ) at patching the kernel that sometimes the location where the patch is run can make all the difference...
  24. Yes it does - thanks. I fell much clearer about how it all fits together and what I want to do - perhaps it's time to start having a go!
