  1. I tried the newest version of knoppix and it wouldn't detect my internet :X. I'm going to re-try everything again and see what kind of success I have with it.
  2. Hello, Well I got my system running great and everythin is working fine EXCEPT my DSL speed :( I did all the steps that you did ac_dispatcher, but I still notice a major lag, when I first try to log on. I log on to my computer, open up gaim, and it takes ages for it to connect. And to connect to irc.freenode.net on xchat just takes days. I serioulsy don't know what the problem could be. Is it something in the hosts? what is it?!? It was working fine, until I reboot the computer or something of that sort and then it goes back to really really slow stuff. Not the phone line because when I'm hard wired to it, it goes by pretty damn fast, just as if I were connected to the dsl straight on. I'm open to any more suggestions? I'm in a desperate state to get this fixed! -Luis
  3. Well I got the WEP problem fixed. And went ahead with the install. ...... But something went wrong and yeah screwed up :( So now I guess I'm going to have to re-install ubuntu, since it would not run due to a bunch of error. Lot's of them, mostly errors on the root partition. Thank god it didn't do anything to my windows partition or that would of straight up sucked. -Luis
  4. Ok here is the first help for this transforming ( me turns up his new home system ) Anyhow I got the passphrase thing from my router makes Linksys. It set up a WEP key. I got the number down, and I went to install it hoary on it, I put the WEP key in, and it said something about my system not being configured with DHCP or what ever it's called. I never had this problem before, as I look at my router settings it says that it's PPPoE. Which according to some people completely fine, and like I said it's worked fine in the past. Any Ideas? BTW I read the configuration screen and it said if it was created by a passphrase to use 's:nnnnnnnn' n being the WEP key. Anyideas? I think I'm going to try without the 's:' Thanks
  5. Thanks gawator. Right now I think I'm going to dual-boot. But the Linux system is going to pretty much be the primary. Everything on Linux runs great, just that it's lacking some tools for wireless and all that crap. And please tell me if I'm wrong because I think I am. The whole ordeal with me installing XP was that I didn't know how to search for networks with Linux. I thought that the wireless app in ubuntu would tell me but I was not finding anything. I knew ( after I installed XP ) that Linux had some command to check that for me, which I felt stupid. I pretty much punched a locker at school just for that. Linux is the PIMP of OS's, I'm just going to have the XP system just to be there. And maybe something that I can't figure out how to do on Linux I will just switch to this OS and it will be done. I was running a great system. On Windows it takes up to one minute to transfer songs from my computer to my iPod. In Linux it took less than 5 seconds. Also gtkpod ( the equivalent of iTunes ) let's me play songs that are on my iPod, which windows does not. So in this case gtkpod has a crapload of advantages over iTunes. Tomorrow I'm going to install Linux again, dual-booting for a while. I have a 40 GB hard drive so I'm going to make windows about 15 and the rest for Linux. After that I shouldn't have to re-install for a really really really really really really long time. WEll I can't wait until tomorrow, have to call LinkSys and get my router stuff picked out. The router is dying on me every once in a while, so they said that they will replace the router :) which is awesome. On the other hand I'm on my way to having a great system. -Luis
  6. I installed Windows again, and that's it. It did actually fix the speed problems. I guess I'm still not good enough to run a full system with just LInux installed, there are some tasks that I can't do on linux, and must do on a windows. I might do some dual-booting for a while, I don't know right now. But as it looks right now I don't think I'm going back to Linux for a while. I don't know I'm starting to get very skeptical about all these things. I know I said I was going to quit, but I'm really not quiting. Just taking a break from it. I'm most likely going to install ubuntu again when I build a desktop PC. for now I'll bookmark this page so that I can use it when I come back.
  7. Hello all! Well ubuntu. Hmm the name is cool. This distro is by far one of the best distros that i have used in my time. But I need some help. First of all, my internet connection is extremely slow after I updated to Hoary. I don't know what the cause is I keep on calling ( sprint ) which are the people that provide my internet. They say that everything shows fine on their computer, but I'm constantly getting huge amounts of lags, slow page browsing and take notice that I'm paying for a 1.7mb line. Or 1700K. But I think I might get that problem solved today after my gruesome e-mail to sprint. On the other note I need some good tut for cpu throttle. I think I saw some here on the board, but I can't find them. Ubuntu doesn't seem to have a wiki on how to do it. ( or I just can't find it ) So I was wondering of some of you can give me some steps or point to the right direction of getting this done. My laptop has always had this serious heat issue ( ac_dispatcher you being the main witness ) I just need to get that working that's all, everything is runnin very well. My ipod is finally working under Linux which is a wonderfull thing. And I love it. thanks for the help. -Luis
  8. I'm extremely mad at both ubuntu and my self. I had warty running fine, and decided to update to Hoary through the net upgrade. It just fscked my computer up. Very very bad. First of all they said that the install will not delete anything, like my files and stuff. Well they were wrong, it deleted a website that I was working so hard at in /var/www/apache-default, it also removed my limewire. A ton of packaged INCLUDING the kernel where not upgraded. I've been so happy with having ubuntu because it was/is very easy, but like someone mentioned that ubuntu is still a very buggy distro, and I think it paid off to me. This has been my worst Linux experience ever. As a warning to some of you, back you stuff up before you upgrade, because not even the developers know what ubuntu will do. I will try Hoary, from a cd install, which I don't have because gnome has NO cd burning program that compares to k3b. When i install Ubuntu again, which I'm hoping I do today by installing windows, downloading ubuntu and then burning it from windows, since it's the only OS that I can rely to actually work perfectly. I will install KDE. Also ac_dispatcher, since we both have the same laptop I've too noticed that ubuntu hogs up a lot of the memory. And mepis seems to be doing the best job on our laptops, I might take that into consideration and install it. For now ubuntu is great, and it will get better. But they need to work out some of their issues with upgrading. I would like ubuntu to me more like mandrakes upgrading, that you can pop in the hoary cd and it gives you the option to boot, instead of having to go through synaptics and all those complicated commands that they gave me in #ubuntu. The most annying of couse was the " not upgrading of the kernel ". If the kernel was not upgraded ( and it's one of the most vital parts of the OS ) then who really knows what other programs weren't? For exmple I know for a fact that ' gtkpod ' which I use for my iPod was not updated. Which didn't piss me off, but like I said the kernel did. I don't eve know what to say anymore , I like ubuntu but at the same time I freaking hate it. I really do, like I would like to burn it down right now. GNOME needs some better burning programs like k3b. gnomebaking just hands down sucked ass. Couln't even get the right speed to write the cd's at. even with the defaults. so for me tonight it's going to be Ubuntu + KDE = Happy Me!
  9. Oh there is a way to tweak them, it's just a bunch of option to xorg.conf, I think I have a few I don't know I'll have to check and get back to you. The tweaks pretty much just enhance the video cards performance a little more. Good to hear that you got them working.
  10. Just a quick note to anyone that has an ATI Mobility Card. The only Mobility cards supported are M9 and up, anything below that ( like the m6, in my case ) are NOT SUPPORTED . The best thing that you can do is compile the kernels radeon drivers into the kernel, if you want to do that contact me and I will give you a great how to on how to do it.
  11. hmm It might not be a resolution problem could be a video card problem. On my laptop I have a ATI Mobility M6 ( which is very crappy ) and when ever I can't run games the same problem happeneds. I'm only able to run a few games, however non of the ones that you have named Things you can try: You can try fiddeling with the screen res. some more, but It might come down to wether or not you have the ATI drivers. If you do have the ATI drivers installed, then it might be a problem with the res. after all. But if not I would deff. give them a try, and I'm 99% sure that the ATI linux drivers support that video card that you have listed. There is some posts in the " Tips and Tricks " forum, go in there an look around, there a quite a few awesome how-to's. Also try running simple games that might have come pre-installed when you installed Linux. Such games can be BZFlag, TuxRace and a few other ( urpmi bzflag or urpmi tuxracer ) So once again, check to see if you can run the basics of games & if you have the ATI drivers. If not then you might want to give those drivers a spin, like I said I'm pretty sure tha they support your video card, but double check just to be sure. Good Luck -Luis
  12. SoulSe: I looked for that option and it's there but it's faded out. so either that means that it successfully read the iTunes data base ( which I could have ) or it's not available :( Anyhow , I'm getting a use of this GTK pod, still debating on wether I should keep windows or not, since the only reason that I was using it was because of the whole iPod thing. But I seem to have got it working on Linux now so it's all good :) Thanks for the help -Luis EDIT: It still keeps on saying " do not disconnect " I'm I have now let it go for more than 30 minutes and still the same thing. Is it healthy for me to just disconnect it? I mean I don't want to cause any more damage
  13. Ok well thanks guys I got it working I uploaded 2 songs, but I have 2 questions First of all when I want to upload a song or after I'm done adding the songs and I want to add them to the iPod do I just hit the " sync " button or what else is there to do? The other thing that I was wondering is that it takes about 5 minutes or so on windows to transfer a handfull of songs onto the ipod, and if not mistaken it took Linux less than freaking 2 seconds? Is this correct or did I miss something I saw that the ipod after I had unmounted it and stuff still had the sign " do not disconnect " I left that for about 5 mintes... so I don't know if that's what let the songs copy , or what. But it would not go away ... I'm wondering if there is a way to change that or, what must be done .... thanks -Luis PS I just found out it's those scripts that take care of that :) ..... lol stupid me ALWAYS
  14. Thanks SoulSe I'm trying that out right now. As for the HFS if I can get the songs copied onto the hard drive ( 568 ) I would do so, if not then I will just leave it alone. Sounds like it might be faster than fat32 or what ever I have on there right now. Just want to see if I can get the iPod working with Linux PERIOD , messing around with it will come later :) -Luis
  15. yes, I added that. It was also mentioned in one of the links. No my problem is that I can't write anything to my iPod, when I get home I'll try it again and give you the full error message. Pretty much it says that I can't write anything the device, it's a read-only I believe. -Luis
  16. yeah lol, I personally never EVER will trust one of those Online Free Giveaway things, just not my thing. Please go spam another board. -Luis
  17. thank you for the post cybrjackle, but I have come accross some of those links and that is what I have been trying to use. Still no luck tho :\, I'll have to try and get a hold of SoulSe he has apperently got his to working perfectly -Luis
  18. well from I know it's an iPod mini, and I bought it during Xmas. Is there somewhere that I can look that tells me? EDIT: LOL ok I looked at the iPod and this is what I was able to get Version : 1.2 Model: M9160LL Format: Windows
  19. Ok well I installed Ubuntu Linux , and let me tell you that detected the iPod right of the box. I was able to mount it and everything, but when trying to use gtkpod to transfer the songs on there it says that it's not writeble or something, one thing that I liked a lot was that I can transfer songs from the iPod to the computer, which if I believe iTunes doesn't even have! So I'm thinking about doing that, and formatting the hdd on the iPod , and having HFS instead of the fat32 that I currently have. But I seriously don't want to try that, it might just mess something up :( I'm open to any ideas , so please place your comments, I want to have another reason to be completely windows free :) -Luis
  20. The only thing that I'm having trouble with now is my iPod. I'm able to mount it and everything but when I try and use gtk, everything goes haywire. Keeps on telling me that I don't have write permissions or something like that :( Any of you guys have experience with iPod and LInux? I've followed all those links on the net and I still can't get mine to work. -Luis
  21. Ok well there are some good news and bad news ... thankfully the bad news don't pertain you :) I found out that these drivers do not support my M6 video card BUT!!!! they do support the M9! So go ahead and try this stuff your self, because if you configure it correctly it will work. Just a note of advice, make sure you copy your current xorg.conf to something like xorg.conf.backup, just incase it does not work you can always go back .... GoOd LuCk and I hope it works for you, for now I'm off to meddle with Ubuntu :) YUM!!!! -Luis
  22. Well I hate to have to admit it but Jet2k5 is back on Ubuntu :) After medeling with Linux for a while I've decided that I want a distro that is both stable & up-to-date . Ubuntu seems to be doing those very very well. The main reason for giving ubuntu another try is that I have a very crappy ATI card on this laptop and almost no drivers work with it :) which means that I never have DRI unless I do a kernel compile. Which I had to do 3 times in mdk, and let me tell you it was a pain in the ass. However ubuntu has DRI on my computer from a fresh install! So this distro is deff. staying on my box, no matter what. I'm now off to try my iPod, I've seen that cybrjackle has apperently got his working :) so I'm of to try it, and maybe I can get rid of windows for once and for all I guess it's good to be back?!? -Luis
  23. I think it would be nice if you can stop in #musb on irc.freenode.net, instead of having to post every 5 minutes a 10 minute chat shouldn't be too bad , could it? I'm in there right now ... lol I'm in there 24/7. -Luis
  24. lol, thanks, I clicked on it but it's not displaying anything :)
  25. ok, thanks!! well I actually fixed the problem by switching to the stock kernel and that worked right out of the box :). But now when I went to startx, it says that ' no screens found ', which I can relate to your last post, so I will try and fix it as soon as I'm done with my bk. -Luis
