  1. Well, still nothing. I logged in as root, and edited that file. MenuEntryHeight was not there, so I added it - alphabetically, even. I tried it with 32 first. Once I changed it and logged in to my user account, there was no change. I went into "advanced" in the icons section just to make sure. The icon size in the "panel" area was still shaded. I even tried the same procedure usng a height of 48. Still nothing. Both times I rebooted the system, just to make sure. Strange how in "panels", there's a 32 option, but it's shaded . . . you can't change it. Adding the MenuEntryHeight changed nothing. Another thing I found was that with SUSE you can, in addition to the above, open up the console or press alt F2, and type in "dcop kicker pnael restart." That didn't work, either. I tihnk this whole procedure applies only to SUSE. Too bad. I see no reason why the k-menu icons have to be so small in Mandrake 10. Even WinXP allows you to change the icon size in its start panel. (By the way, my icon set is "Nuvola", and it has all the correct sizes, each in their own folders from 16 to 128. They resize perfectly on the desktop and in folders, etc.)
  2. No luck. Under the "advanced" settings, I treid the "panel" option, but that is shaded and can't be changed. The other ones don't make any difference, either.
  3. bump. I, too, would love to know. The right-clickling applies only to the taskbar icon size, not to the icons in the k-menu itself, such as office, internet, multimedia, and the icons that are deeper in the menu tree. I tried to look at all the look 'n feel options, but to no avail. Maybe there's a console command? I'm using KDE 3.2, Mandrake 10 Official. I'd appreciate any help :-)
  4. Thank you very much for being so helpful ! A new thing learned today. :-) Yet another reason to love Linux: accurate colour labelling. I assume, however, that when I run games in Linux (under WINE, I guess) that in windows require 32-bit, I'll need to do some tweaking, right? By the way, now that I'm asking, what is the BEST windiows game emulation package? Is it still WINE? I heard something about WINE-X or something, too. Thankis again!
  5. How can I change the colour depth maually in MDK10? I only get options for 16-bit and 24-bit, but since my vidcard supports 32-bit, I'd like it to go higher. Do I edit some sort of file through the console? If so, could someone please give me explicit instructions on what commands I should use, etc. Thank you :-)
  6. How do I access the thesaurus in Kword (Koffice)? There doesn't seem to be one. EDIT------------------------------- Never mind, I found it. Right-clicking in the document will do it (show related words.)
  7. When I installed MDK10, my Radeon 8500 128mb vidcard was detected and I was asked if I wanted to use Mandrake's XFree86 3D acceleration. I chose to do so, and now it seems that I am 3D accelerated. Now . . . . I know that with WinXP, there were standard Radeon drivers (good ones) from ATI, and that my "display" options increased - I could tweak OpenGL, etc. I replaced those drivers with some customized ones from Omegacorner (Driverheaven), and they were faster and I had a few more options as well. So I had very good, highly tweaked drivers under XP. Now, I know that MDK10 gave me 3D acceleration . . . but is this all it is?? No "tweaking" options? Are there better drivers out there for MDK10 and Radeon cards? I know ATI has some but they're quite old. I'd appreciate any help. :D
  8. I've been researching this problem for over a week now, making phone calls, posting in forums, and yes . . . . . you need to use a REAL modem with Linux. Ther is a slim (to none) possibility that you *might* get a winmodem to work, but even then, you're still going to have issues. You need a modem that is not software driven, but that has full hardware . . . . an external serial modem. I've also heard that PCMCIA hardware modems will work, but in any case, virtually any brand of external serial modem is almost guaranteed to work with Linux. The setup ios simple too, especially in Mandrake 10: simply select the port location of the modem, have it queried, and input all your ISP info - password, phone#, etc. Believ me, I've already tried at least 7 winmodems with Linux Mandrake 10, and it's been nothing but headaches . . .ESPECIALLY for a noob.
  9. Thanks for the tips Vee . . . yes, that's me, "new and lazy." Definitely. Coming from WinXP I expect everything to be automated. The more I use Mandrake10, however, the more at home I feel with it. So, putting up with modem hassles is worth it. ;-) Yes, I've alerady explored Kppp, it reminds me of MacPPP on my old MacOS 8.0 system. As for the serial modem, I'm looking into either a US Robotics or a Zoom.
  10. Point taken, VeeDub . . . . I'm getting a serial modem this week. ;-) Thanks.
  11. Thanks plati!! I'll have a look at that. A few people swear by the U.S. Robotics Sportster 56k external (serial) v.92 modem. Anyone else using this? Appaerntly, it works right out of the box, no configuration necesary apart from selecting it's port in Kppp. BUT, I think people are referring to an older model. How about the newer model of this?
  12. Maybe it's time for a list like this. If it's already been done, then I apologize, but I'm just exasperated with Linux's poor 56k modem support. So, please post your working 56k modem. Conditions: 1.) Must work with Mandrake10 Official, at least 2.) Must work right out of the box, that is, no drivers to download/compile, and even better if MDK10 Official does most of the configuration automatically. 3.) Can be PCI, or a Hardware modem (better.) 4.) Please note what you paid for it, in US or CDN funds. My setup: AMD Athlon XP2000+ ECSK7S5A mobo 768mb DDR RAM Radeon 8500 128mb Sounblaster Audigy X-gamer **Mandrake 10 Official, with 2.6.3-7 kernel** I'll be honest, this thread is to help me, but I think it might help others as well. I KNOW about the Mandrake10 hardware compatibility list, but I prefer the experiences of actual users. It would be nice if there is a 56k modem out there, PCI or hardware, that is designed specifically for newer MandrakeLinux10 kernels (especially 2.6.3-7), that if possible, comes bundled with Linux drivers. Maybe what's best is a hardware modem. I know it's asking alot, but I like asking anyway. My 56k Conexant drivers from Linuxant are kernel-dependant, and it turns out (my luck) that my kernel (2.6.3-7) isn't listed. I have neither the experience nor the nerves to update/recompile the kernel. So, I'll opt for a new, more compatible modem. Thanks.
