  1. I installed 2007 powerpack,I re-instlaled twonkyMedia server,a UPnP server I used to stream videos and music to my living room, but they cannot connect. In addition I can't conect to the server frommy windows machine however I can connect on the linusx machine by going to localhost Is there some kind of firewall messing things up? looks like shorewall was running, I stopped it but it makes no difference.
  2. I cannot belive you think 2007 is hte easiest distro to install. I have had nothing but trouble since I started, nad I have installed mutliple version of mandrake to date. glxgears doesn't even seem to be installed nor does urpmi know anything about.
  3. I have a GeForce2 Ultra in my linux rig. It worked just fine under 2005SE I installed 2007, X wouldn't come up so I had to use the "nv" module instead of nvidia toeven get into X I went to the nvidia page, dowloaded the drivers, and it tell ms my card is not support, that it's "legacy"? does that mean I can't get hardware acceleration in 2007? glxgears also doens't appear to be installed, nor does "urpmi glxgears" work.
  4. I changed nvidia to nv in my Xorg config file and I now am able to log in graphically still pissed Mandriva couldn't get it right I want Hw acceleration too, I play games on this rig ... heading over to nvidia web site, see if I can install from there
  5. dmseg pointed me to /var/log/Xorg.0.log whch contains: So I get something is wrong with nvidia support. hmmph. how do I fix ot short of re-installing?
  6. installed 2007 (I had to manually partition the HD so it would have enoguh room). Now it appears to try and start X but fails and gets to a gui login. how do I troubleshoot this? I chose the same video card as in 2005SE, I did ask it to automatically install the nvidia dirvers, was that a mistake? when will linux distros finally get installs right?
  7. looks like by defaul the installer picked ony 4G for the / partition which is not enough to install "everything". Still doesn't explain why it should hang though I had to go in fdisk and delete the partition table for it to get past the license stage
  8. I removed my HS which held 2005LE, installed a new drive (300G) in the machine, booted from 2007 DVD I did "use free space" in the formatting options thinking that it would tell me what it did (but it didn't) It gave me the option to copy "CDs" from DVD to HD, which I did. Got to the package selection screen, selected more or lesseverything ecept I just select KDE, not the others. ---> it gives me a message that ther is not enough space to instlal all selected packages????? So I figured it screwed up on the formatting, so I reboot the computer, start the install over, and now after I accept the license and clcik next, I get a blank pane. "License" is sstilll highlighted on the side, "Security" should be next but it doesn;t quite seem to get there. why is it hanging? why did it get there the first time? how do I fix it? why did it tell me I didn't even have enough space on my HD? The bIOS sees it as 300G by the way
  9. I thought that that the idea *redundant* RAID was to allow you to keep going if one drive failed. It seems that the dual disk solution is what I need anyway. Also in case soemthing really bad happens that corrupts the data, an "offline" backup is more likely to be safe. I don;t want to backup over the network, but a disk in the same machine that gets unmounted and powered down should be safe enough (short of the case catching fire!) I have a script that does basically that. it uses cp and not rsync, although I might change it to use rsync as it seems more efficient and has a better handling of "exclude" options
  10. I think this belongs in the HW forum... Among other things my Mandriva machine is being used as a UPnP media server (running TwonkyMedia server with D-Link DSM-520 client). This means that I have a rather large collection of music (almost 30Gig) and a fast growing collection of movies (still in the process of ripping all my DVDs to DivX). Given how painfully slow it is to rip everything, I would hate to do it again in case of harddrive failure. There is too much to do backup on DVDs, so I could use a 2nd harddrive to make a 1:1 copy of my media directory, or I could use RAID to get redundancy. how easy is RAID to setup? what are the pitfalls? can you boot from the raid partition or can do you need a 3rd disk to boot from? can you do it softwre only or do you need hardware? I wouldn';t mind learning about RAID, but having a 2nd disk in the machine that only gets powered up and mounted during backups seems like an easier solution.
  11. I'm still running SE2005, and I am about to do a hardware upgrade (nothing big, just going to larger hardrive, althoughI may try redundant raid). Should I install 2006 or should I wait for 2007? Last time I tried to upgrade from one version to the next all sort of goofy things happened, so I'm a little concerned about going to 2006 now, and upgrading to 2007 when it comes out. I saw 2007 is in beta 3 but I don;t really keep track of what the roadmap/schedule release is...
  12. the problem is hwy did they have the wrong permission to start with?
  13. I run logwatch (www2.logwatch.com) nightly. it goes through system logs and extracts "interesting" information. This morning I have the following in my log: is this normal? I don't remember seeing eanything like that before. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  14. I took a look at my syslog today, and it's full of messages similar to this one: what does it mean, how do I fix it? googling only seems to dig up stuff that's several years old.
  15. yes filelight and the Konq file size views works great and show the info in 2 slightly different ways. I can;t remember the specifics but to get the filesize view in Konq I had to install something, like maybe one of the kdeaddon packages. That was a long while ago though. I personaly prefer the filelight view.
  16. I did call the corporation sponsoring the web site and pointed out that they should have a low-tch low badnwidth alternative to that flash <censored>
  17. My wife has not been complaining since I replaced Windows with Linux on the family laptop, but she finally did yesterday: Safeway stores is running a promotion that requires you to go to a flash web site, and the site complains that we are not running the latest version of flash. As far as I can tell the latet version for windows is 8, but the latest for linux is 7. For all I know it could be that the web site is being stupid and refusing to play content that it could with flash 7, but the bottom lline is, it's not wooking.
  18. One reason that I upgraded to firefox 1.5 was that sometimes firefox starts interpreting the "up" scrollwheel motion and the "go to previous page" key (like backspace), so as I try to scrollthrough a web page, it sendd me to the previous page. Unfortunately firefox 1.5 suffers from the same problem. Firefox is the only app I'm aware of where the behavior of the scroll key is incorrect. This only happens under linux, in fact I think only my Mansrake machine has the problem, not my Mepis-based laptop This is driving me nuts to the point that I'm ready to stop using Firefox if I can't find asolution here.
  19. Just looking up the instructions on what to copy takes more than 1 minute. Especially since the name of the pluggin changed since I last did it with java 1.4 or something like that. It's not hard, it's just an annoying step to perform. Why the firefox install script can't scan your machine for a jvm is beyond me.
  20. I followed the instructions in that post and it mostly works, but java doesn;t work in firefox anymore, so I'll have to go look for the instructions on how to get that done, etc... This is exactly the type of things I was hoping NOT to do. At least all my extensions seem to have been imported properly
  21. Is there a way to get ARK to recognize RAR files without having to have to choose them from a drop down menu? I find this extra step annoying.
  22. Last time I updated firefox from the mozilla site rather than use an rpm, it took me days to straighten it out, because the tarball does things differently from the rpm. Is there an rpm of firefox 1.5 for 2005LE? All I can find is 2006 based and won't install on 2005LE.
  23. I haven't installed 2006 yet, so I haven't sued Smart. Can Smart and urpmi co-exist and not walk all over each other's toes? Can software installed by one be removed by the other for example (or upgraded, or whatever...)
  24. I downloaded a 1.3G torrent with Azureus, it has hundreds (may be a few thousands?) files in it. Downloading the file works great, but when Azureus copies the file from the Incomplete directory to the finished torrents directory, I get an error (from Azureus) that the copy failed because too many files wre open. Outof curiosity I copied the same "incomplete" torrent on the windows machine and Azureus was able to finish it and move it with no problems. As far as I know both the windows and the linux machine have a the same defualt parameters for Azureus and I wasn't downloading or seeding any other torrent at the time. I'm guessing the problem is either with Java or Linux. How do I go about solving the problem? This is going to be a "progressive" torrent where new directories will be added from time to time, so I'm goin to keep running into the same problem.
