  1. I set up logwatch to run nightly and every day I get warning like these reported by the kernl: 17 Time(s): atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x81 on isa0060/serio0). 17 Time(s): atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e001 <keycode>' to make it known. what causes those, should I worry and how do I fix it?
  2. yes, the basic python-based client is quite serviceable. bittorrentgui I think it's called.
  3. Is the transfer of files from windows to windows machine any faster? I always though that windows file transfers were "pacing" themselves. I didn;t measure the speed but I noticed that hte lights on my switch blink on/off and that seems to indicate the the transmission is not "continous". I don't know if this is a "feature" of the samba server.
  4. I believe it should work in linux too, it's mostly a function of your hardware (mobo and modem) and your BIOS. Never used it though.
  5. Problem solved. For whatever reason sendmail wasn't working either (messges would never leave the queue), so I removed it (urpme), made sure postfix was removed too. I then re-installed postfix (urpmi postfix) and made sure not to use the wizard. When I would try to use mail, I would still get some weird error message, but after a bit of research of the internet it turns out I forgot to start the service, so after doing a "postcript start" everything started working just fine.
  6. answering my own question, rpm -q kdenetwork-krfb gave me the answer, but is there a way to do it with the urpm tools?
  7. I want to know which version number my kdenetwork-krfb rpm is from the command line (over SSH). I don;t know how to query it. If I do urpmq kdenetowrk-krfb, it simply shows "kdenetowrk-krfb".
  8. what does this do? why does it work? My linux machine is on 24/7 and idle most of the time so I would like to have a reliable solution that would keep it cooler while idle without slowing it down (or worrying about temps) when busy.
  9. to install azureus simply untar (expand) the archive, cd in the directory and type "./azureus" and you're in business. get java here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp I've never tried the rpm version, I always installed the binary version (run the file you download basically). Just follow the isntructions for whatever version you download.
  10. I went the sendmail route. I'm really not interested in receiving email or using it for "regular" emails on this machine, so is there "minimal" and "secure" configuration that I want to run it under?
  11. I still can't get this working! Here's what I did: urpme lm_sensors downloaded lm_sensors-2.8.5 source tar extracted tar file su make clean make user make user_install so far so good no errors or anything. the user install tells me to add /usr/loca/lib to /etc/lib.so.conf wich I did. I then run lm_sensors, using all the default answers. I tells me to add "alias char-major-89 i2c-dev" which I did the it tells me I'll need to do: modprobe i2c-isa modprobe w83627hf but when I do the "modprobe w83627hf" I get the same dreaded "FATAL: Module w83627hf not found." What am I doing wrong? By the way, doing a sensors -v does show 2.8.5 so it looks like it was compiled properly. I really want to get this working but I'm not sure what to try next.
  12. you can also try alsamixer at the command line, it uses characters to draw the graphs but you'll get bargraph for absolutely everything. I think m mutes/unmutes the selected entry and "space" toggles capture
  13. mdk 10 has been driving me nuts lately. It all started with my wanting to use a script called logwatch, that distills logs into an email summary for the purpose of alerting the administrator of potential security issues.. logwatch uses the "mail" command to send email. When I try to the the mandrake control panel's "server configuration" wizrd for postfix, it asks me a couple of questions then simply tells me to that the install fails, without any details, and tells me to try with different parameters. how do I send mail from the command line using the "mail" command in mandrake 10? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  14. that's not the point. why is my console suddenly broken and how do I fix it?
  15. If I press CTRL-ALT-F3 to bring up another console, it looks very strange, it almost looks lie "ascii art" text. I can sort of read a few huge words on the screen and see a huge blinking cursor. I also get the same behavior if I press ESC during shutdown to see the text "behind" the shutdown screen. This happened fairly recently but I'm not sure when. The most recent things I have done that could have caused this are: - upgraded the motherboard - installed newer NVidia drivers - did along overdue update and picked up at least a dozen updates through the Mandrake Control Center Applet Any idea? I wish I could take a screenshot.
  16. don't I already hae i2c in my existing install, or do I need to upgrade to a new version to support the new lm_sensors? What would the name of the rpm/tar be for i2c?
  17. they are all backward compatible, I'd use the latest windows version.
  18. A friend of mine running Red Hat (I think 9) has a tool running nightly called logwatch which will parse all sort of logs and report any potential security issues. Is there a similar package for mdk10? I found fwlogwatch but it seems dedicated to firewalls (iptables, Cisco...) whereas I'd rather see local and SSH security warnings.
  19. Well i get lower framerates for ut2004 and glxgears with the 5600 compared to the 4200 both 8X agp. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Get a 6800GT and overclock it to Ultra speed. Still over $300 though.
  20. Try and play with the settings. Some functions like shadows are very CPU intensive and don't add much to the gameplay experience. Try enabling tripple buffering and VSync for more consistent frame rates. The new Onslaught mode just uses a lot of CPU compared to Deathmatch for example, but you should be able to get playable framerates. My main problem is my video card: GeForce 2 Ultra used to be The Sh*t a few years back but it's showing its age now. Get whichever version you want, the DVD or the 6CDs version, they're identical and you don't need the CDs or DVD once it's installed (with the game patched to 3236). The "Special Edition" has an extra DVD on creating maps and mods for the game, but you don't care about that or you'd already own it.
  21. doesn't the disk need to be unmounted in order to be partionned? I assume when you plug it in it gets automounted. Something to try.
  22. Interesting, I've had the game crash "randomly" on me too. Do you know if the 3236 patch stops it from crashing? under windows it removes the CD check. I just realized I never patched my linux install. I have the DVD version and I would rather not leave the DVD in the drive for feer of it getting damaged. I was quitre happy that Epic removed it in the 3236 patch (in windows at least).
  23. I guess I can;t figure out how to install it from source. I type make all but it stops before the end. The instructions on how to build it are old (they reference 2.2 kernel) and it looks like I need the entire kernel tree to build lm_sensors? Can I use a red hat or fedora rpm instead?
  24. I went a different route for now, since I read on the Teamspeak forums that it works fine withe the SB Live! and I had one lying around: I put the SB Live! in and I think it fiexed the sound output problems, but now my microphone doesn;t seem to work in teamspeak. Using kmix I can bump up the "feedback" volume from the microphone and I hear it in my headset so I think the mic input is working, it just appears not to get to Teamspeak. I also launched Audacity and hit the record button and all I get is a flat line. How do I select/enable my microphone?
  25. Well, this confirms that I need version 2.8.5 and nothing else: (from the lm_sensors page) and from the lm_sensors freshmeat web site for 2.8.5: I can't find a mdk rpm of v2.8.5, what is the next best solution? If I build from source, will it screw up urpmi like I suspect? Can I use RedHat or Fedora packages? (those are available). Thanks
