  1. Because I or no one can access the site via the internet. The hostname of my box is mandrake101.no-ip.org, which is why I can access it. My site still can't be accessed via the Internet.

Ya, that could definatly be a problem.

Check your firewall logs, I"m trying to access your site now. Perhaps there'll be something in them that will give us a clue as to why its not accessable.

It says loading and transfering data but it hangs on that.

I think I see at least part of the problem. mandrake101.no-ip.org shows an IP of 63.210.163.XXX when I ping it yet when I try to access the page it gives me a 64.10.164.XXX address.

  2. They're all linux usable. TCP/IP is TCP/IP well you get the idea. If you coudln't get on using KPPP chances are it was a setting that was either missed ot not put in correctly. I say this only because it's sooooo darn easy to do.

As for calling then ISP for help, unless you need some frustration I strongly suggest not doing that. The first words out of thier mouths will be something like:" We don't support Linux, please go into your Control Panel..." :-)

Are you sure that the info you put into KPPP was correct? User name, pass, number etc? Did you try one of the other dialers?

  3. I got all the 1.3.27 packages downloaded and installed. Everything is at the default settings. I can still access the web server via localhost, the LAN IP Address, and the hostname (mandrake101.no-ip.org), but I can not access it via the Internet Address assigned to me by my ISP. I am no longer using the LinkSys Router, only 2 NICs now. The Firewalls are turned off, except Shorewall, but I have allowed access to port 80. This is really starting to upset me now. I don't know where the problem lies, could it be something in the Network settings ? Hostname ? I have tried everything in the httpd.conf file, but nothing works.

My first thought is DNS settings but why are you so concerned about this? You can access by localhost, the lan IP and the no-ip name. Why is it so important to access by the IP given to you by your ISP?

  4. I can have you up and running in 10 minutes. step 1 Go get yourself a copy of IPCop 2. Burn the iso to disk then power down the machine with the cdrom in it. 3. Install the cdrom temporarilyin the machine thats going to be the firewall and install IPCop and when the install is down put the cdrom back in its proper machine.

And baddaboom baddbing one NAT capable firewall with a lan and a dmz set up if thats how many nics you had installed. Its also a proxy server, dhcp server with a nice little web based front end or you can ssh in do tweak it through the cmd line if you so choose.

  5. Telewest are great untill you have to ring support' date=' where your meet with

"what version of windows are you using",

"im not using windows im using linux",

"ok goto start run type winipcfg",

"errr [sarcasum'] it says bash : winipcfg not found"

"you must have typed it wrong"

    and on we went

LOL, you actually called the helpdesk at an ISP for help when you run Linux? tsk, tsk, tsk Never do that unless you feel the urge to confuse the person on the phone or need a headache. Very few offically support anything other then windows. And if the add says works with any OS then mean any windows OS.

  6. Many thanks copex.  I had a look at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/  and I see that Tiscali are up among this month's leaders.  So since I already use them that's the way I'll probably go.  Now, just to show how uninformed I am :-) - at the moment I use kppp to connect.  With ADSL would I continue to use kppp  and would Tiscali have to provide me with DNS numbers? ( At the moment I don't have to provide kppp with any DNS numbers, though formerly I dd).  Or is this all tosh and I have to configure all sorts of stuff?

I don't know the ISP but you don't necesarily have to set DNS or IP numbers for that matter, I set my 10. ip from my ISP on my firewall, my buddy on the same ISP doesn't set anything as it's all done by DHCP/PPOE, and my dad in Alberta just sets his username/password and he gets it through DHCP also. They all just used the Networking component in the MCC to set it up to get the IP through DHCP.

  7. Not sure why any ISP wouldn't work. TCP/IP is TCP/IP is TCP/IP. The only time I could see it now working with anything but Windows is if you have to install some silly software of thiers to get connected. But even those ISPs the default ppoe clients in linux and windows seem to work.

  8. I did a bit of research and the only thing we can do is to remove these entries from the log files (the attack itself is harmless on linux host anyway).  That can be done easily without much effort.  Only have to add a couple of line in the config files here and there.  Here are 3 usufull links related to that:MOttS

Humm, thought I mentioned something like this can't hurt your linux box earlier. My logs are full of folks trying to run .exes etc to infect an IIS box. In a sick way its fun to watch them trying.

  9. Well i like to run only one OS and it is linux because I use two hard drive one is run windows98,he told me you should run windows on master hard drive & linux  at slave hd.

O.k.let say I get a brand new computer with out any OS,is it possible to install linux OS?

Yes, there is no need to run a dual boot machine if you don't want or need too. Turn on the new computer, set the bios to boot to cd first, just to be on the safe side, save and exit and when the machine reboots it will boot to the cd which will then start the linux install.

  10. Is there a computer that only linux can run with out lindows?

Not quite sure I understand the question. Just about any computer can run linux just as just about any computer and run windows or lindows(although why you'd want to run linows I'll never know).

Do you mean without dualbooting so you have a linux only box? Thats easy, if you have a bootable cd blow away whats on the drive and set your bios to boot to cd and away you go.

  11. is it possible for mandrake to be booted with a floppy?

Yes like Ramfree said. In the MCC under Boot, I think theres an option to create a boot disk, also during the install it give you the option to create one as I recall.
