You need to install some dev packages. Try kernel-source, kernel-headers, gcc2.96 (even 9 has it I believe). Since my install went smoothly I can't really tell you exactly what package you need but those are a good start.

I too get it squacking about vmmon modules but when I go to build them I get: None of VMware Workstation's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running

kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

Now I know enough to get in serious trouble :lol: but I wouldn't have a clue to know what the path is for something like this. Any pointers on where I should start looking? I tried /usr/include/linux and /usr/include/asm and /usr/include/net but all gave me the same question about my C header files.

Must remind myself I went to linux cause it was more challenging and interesting. :D

MD 9 is not listed as supported on the vmware website. Yu'llprobably need to wait til they do support MD9.0

How'd folks get it to install then? I swear I saw posts here and the other forum and newgroups from folks running 9 that got it installed. To bad they didn't say how though. :-)

Ok I give up, whenever I try to install VMWare on my MDK 9.0 I get the

following error:None of VMware Workstation's pre-built vmmon modules is

suitable for your running kernel.

I've tried versions 3.0 (which worked very nicely on MDK 8.2) and 3.2 with

no luck. This is just a default install of MDK, I didn't choose anything

like the Enterprise or Secure kernel.

Any one have an idea what I have to change/do to get VWmare to install on my

system?

Now I just have to find a version that works on 9.0.

Sounds pretty much like my experience with VMware, although I went in knowing it wasn't for gaming and that things would be slower. For me that's no big deal I basically only use it for applying for jobs so I don't care much about the speed.

I like your last one about the DHCP "confusion" EEP that could have been just a tad bad and confusing. :o

SNF is a dedicated MDK distro for a firewall. I prefer one like IPCop but the principle is the same. A dedicated box running a stripped down linux distro configured as a firewall.

Theres always my personal favorite option. Get your hands on an old pos computer and make it into a dedicated firewall. I run IPcop on mine but theres a lot of options out there if you don't like IPcop.

Why not use urpmi instead of rpm? It should make the dependencie hell easier to deal with.

In any case, is anyone having problems with 9.0 dropping the network connection? I crawled out of bed this morning to find I couldn't go anywhere online. After checking that the nics were all green, killing the ISP gateway ( as vibe can majorily suck that way) I went into MCC/Network to find the network down. It was a simple matter to bring it back up but that was definatly a first.

The nic is a 3com509c which didn't ever do this on 8.2 and while this is the first time it's happened on 9.0 its darned odd. And now large amounts of coffee are necessary.

It's the full version you download. The only thing that is a trial about it is the license agreement..

What about virus dat updates? I used to have a copy of McAfee that wouldn't expire, or was it Nortorn, that wouldn't expire but after X amount of time you couldn't update the dat files.

A DMZ is demilitarized zone, geek speak for the place, away from your lan, to place things like servers for the outside world. Seen them called as Red (internet) Green (Lan) Orange (DMZ).

Yes you can. I have an old pos IBM, p100 and a whopping 64mg of ram and a 2g hd that is running IPCop on as my firewall/NAT box. By default to the lan it allows email, web, ftp etc. You can set up a DMZ for things like emial, ftp, web servers if you want to run those or you can forwared the ports back to the lan server if you haven't got enough boxs.

I have my ISP line going into the firewall and from one nic there to a 8 port hub and the other nic to the DMZ where I have my servers and

I've never noticed a performance drop in speed due to the wall, unless I misconfigured it of course.

I have my sound working in VMWare, as I recall (and it's been a while since I did this) I had to get the path, kill the sound in linux, put in the path in the VMWare config and launch the OS and it worked. From that point on I just launch VMware, select the OS and sound works fine without me having to kill it in linux.

Like the others said though considering that VMware isn't meant for things like games is it really worth the hassle to get it working?

How about this option? Take that spare computer of yours and run it as a dedicated firewall with something like IPCop? I suggest that one as I know it best. anyone know how to make KDE 3.1 co-exist with KDE 3.0.3?  I haven't tried it yet, since MDK9.0 has been so worry free for me.  But...if it aint broke...fix something ....

Think I"ll let someone else be the guinea pig on this one. I have 9.0 humming along nicely and don't really want to bugger it up trying 3.1 (at least not yet :lol: )

YA I never figured out how to run icq/ msn messanger/etc. off gAIM but would like to know ...

ICQ is easy just fire up Gaim, it installes pre-configured for ICQ. MSN and the rest you just go Tools/Plugins and select the correct one. As in libmsn for the MSN network etc. Then once that's done you go Tools/Accounts/Add. Change the protocol to the IM that you want and fill out the information necessary. Then once your back at the Ac****s window highlight the one you created and click the SignOn/Off button and you're off to the races.

BTW depending on the IM filling out the information in the new account may require either putting in your UIN or your hotmail address.

how long would the .iso's take on 56k?  An estimation here.

I remember getting a copy of RH on a 56k and days per iso would be a safe assumption. Head over to cheapbytes and see if they have it would be a better idea.

Thanks Moon Child. I used to run Licq until I found that Gaim would allow me to run ICQ, MSN etc all at once.

so if i'm on 56k they won't affect my speed, and if i shutdown every night instead of leaving comp up will that really matter, like affect it in any way?

It won't affect your connection speed, however it can affect your processing speed a little if you have a smallish cpu. But the app is very well designed in that it uses spares cycles so there shouldn't be any real noticable difference.If you shutdown it obviously stops processing but can be set to autostart and can also be set to only up and download with your permission.
