  1. Hi

When I first started OO.org on Mandrake 9.2 (I updated to 1.1 final from Cooker) I noticed that the file format presets were set to M$-Office formats (doc, xls, ppt). I set them back to OO.org native formats because I don't want to lock my data in proprietary file formats. But next time I started OO.org, the format presets were set to the M$ ones again!

Is there a way to get rid of these presets and switch back to OO.org format presets permanently?

    Thanks for any help

    Chris

I take it that you have set the defaults in the Options?

    If not then try this:

    1. Start OpenOffice

    2. Go to Tools menu and select Options

    3. In the list on the left hand side of the dialogue box click on Load / Save then click on General.

    4. In the options on the right hand side, down near the bottom, is the standard file format selector.

    5. Select each doc type in turn and then change the 'Always save as' option to read the OpenOffice.org format.

    6. Click 'OK'

The only thing I can think of is that you selected the MSOffice options during the installation procedure.

If you have any further problems can I suggest that you send them to the OpenOffice mailing list at http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html. That way you are more likely to get a quick response from one of thousands of contributors and also developers.

Let me know if this has helped.

  2. I believe OO1.1 is supposed to run as a multi-user system, meaning that once you install the rpms as root (or run their installer on their website, as I did), you have to run an additional setup as a regular user.  That creates a folder in your home directory, from which you begin OO by invoking the "soffice" command, as peep correctly mentioned.

All of that information I know from reading their readme.  May want to check the manual included with the RPM.  (I don't know where it is, as I installed from their site.)

There are two ways to install OpenOffice. Either as a network install or a stand alone install.

A network install saves on disk space where more than 1 login is going to use the program.

    To install for a network:

    1. Download or otherwise obtain the latest version which is 1.1.0, this will be a tar.gz file

    2. Extract the tar.gz file to a directory of your choice.

    3. Open a console, su to root and then cd to the directory that the tar.gz file was extracted to. In this directory will be a file called setup.

    4. run this file by typing ./setup -net

    5. follow the dialogue boxes.

    6. Once installed logout as root and then close the console.

Now each individual user needs to install the necessary files in their home directory

    1. Log in as the user who wants to install OOo and locate the directory that the program was installed into in the steps above. You can either use the console or Konqueror.

    2. run setup (this time without the -net suffix)

    3. Select Workstation Install

    4. Follow the dialogue boxes.

This will install the minimum amount of files in each users Home directory

Once installed each user can then, if they want to, obtain and install OOQuickstarter. This puts an icon in the tray to start OOo without going through the Kmenu.

If you want to install OOo as a single user then:

    1. Extract the tar.gz file to wherever you want

    2. Locate and run setup, using a console or Konqueror

    3. Follow the dialogue boxes.

If you then have problems using OOo I would suggest submitting your question to the users@openoffice.org mailing list located at http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html

There are many helpful people on this list including Sun staff, developers and book publishers

  3. What do I need to do to view .rm video in mplayer? I've installed win32 codecs, realplayer codecs and realplayer win32 codecs. I've copied them all to /usr/local/lib/codecs/ as per instructions on the mplayer site

I'm using version  0.91-3.3.1 of mplayer

Why not just download realPLayer for Linux. It works fine on my machine?

Can't locate the URL at the mo as our corporate site has it blocked.

  4. First, have you run all the updates; there are several fixing bugs in drakconf and the menu problem.

I thought I had but I'll check tonight

Ok, everything looks fine now. As PMPatrick suggested I downloaded the outstanding DrakX updates and I can now add users as before.

I still get a very minimal Kmenu as default but at least I get the Edit Menu option when I right click now and so I can relaod the system menu and get back to normal.

Thanks for your help and advice B)

  5. First, have you run all the updates; there are several fixing bugs in drakconf and the menu problem.

I thought I had but I'll check tonight

Second, to fix the menu, right click on the "K" on the kicker and select menu editor. The stuff is probably there but just hasn't been selected to be visible. You can correct that with menu editor. Don't know why you can't launch konqueror; try opening a console and running:

    $ konqueror

and see if you get any error messages.

As I said originally, I don't get the Menu Edit option when I right click over the Kmenu. Also I don't get any shell icons offered, no shells offered in the menu nor the Run Command option.

I have since noticed that if I try to click on the CD icon on the desktop I get an error message in a box titled Cervisia and the error message says something about not being CVS. I can't remember exactly what it says at the moment and I am not at my Linux PC.

Everything works fine for the original user.

  6. I have just found a site (in Spanish) that describes exactly how to configure my camera. Looks like the main problem is that it doesn't appear as /dev/sda1.

The only thing I have in /dev/ is a link to scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc called sda, but that doesn't work no matter in what port I plug my camera in.

I had a similar problem using my camera in ML9.1. I have a Fuji Finepix 401 and nothing I did enabled me to mount it, either with or without the docking cradle. In the end I resorted to buying a smartmedia adaptor, called Zio. This worked as soon as I connected it with a card in.

However, I have since upgraded to ML9.2 and now my camera works perfectly both with and without the cradle.

I would suggest that you consider one or the other of these options.

Hope that helps in some way B)

  7. Hi,

I am having problems adding users to my system and I was wondering if anyone can tell me where I'm going wrong.

Initially I only had myself as a user (as well as Root, obviously) but I want to add my daughter.

I went to MCC - System - Usedrake clicked on Add User and entered the relevant details in the fields.

I then logged out as myself and relogged in under her login and went through the First Time wizard, selecting KDE default and setting her email client as Evolution.

Unfortunately this is where the problem starts. When I try to double click on her home icon I get a short burst of activity in the Panel but nothing opens. Then if I go to the Kmenu I only see a very basic layout of 6 or 7 categories with only item in each category. I get no config icons, I get no Konqueror icons and when I right click over the Kmenu icon I get no Edit Menu option.

Has anyone come across this and if so what have i done wrong or what do I need to do?

BTW, I have tried deleting this new user several times with the same effect.

  8. Problem now solved :D

I used urpmi to install videolanclient and that installde a bunch of other stuff including libdvdcss2 and libdvdplay.

Now all three video players work OK except that the display in their individual windows as very bright. The main screen is fine though. I obviously need to play around and set contrast & brightness for the programs but so far have only found that in Mplayer which has an equaliser but which resets to default every time I close it down.

I'll keep you informed of the progress

  9. If I leave my computer for even a minute without doing anything the monitor goes black.

Mine has a tendency to go freeze during the initial boot, whilst all the services get started and the (OK)'s get printed down the right hand side.

The only thing I can do when this happens is remove power from the PC.

Not been able to pinpoint exactly when it does it yet. I'll post more when I do

  10. Here's a strange phenom .. phenom... phnom .. occurrence :P

    I have LibDVDread installed

    I have LibDVDnav installed

    I have LibDVDcss installed

I have 3 video players available; Mplayer, Totem & Xine

If I play one of my DVDs in Mplayer it plays fine, I don't get the on disk menu that enables me to choose scene, extras etc but it plays ok

If I play the same DVD in Totem or Xine I get an error telling me that I am trying to play an encrypted DVD and in order to do so I need LibDVDcss installed

    Anyone come across this before?

  11. One of the feature I miss (or probably just don't know where to find) from the old board is to view all the posts from one day ago or whatever depending on how you set the time. How do I do that in this board? I tried doing it via search but it says to put something in the search field in order for the command to be executed (something about too much thing to search or something).

Thanks in advance for the advice.

    Hi DragonMage,

I missed this option as well, until I found the equivalent for the new layout.

Near the top right hand corner of the screen is are a set of options as follows:

MY Controls : X New Messages : View New Posts : My Assistant

If you click on My Assistant another window pops up. In the section headed Show Me are the following options:

    The Moderating Team

    Todays Active Topics

    Todays Top 10 Posters

    Overall Top 10 Posters

    My Last 10 Posts

Click on Todays Active Topics. This will display the messages in a similar format to the old layout. Above the messages, on the right, is an area called 'Show Me Active Topics Posted..' and then below this is a text box labelled 'From..' and below that a text box labelled 'Today..' followed by a button with two arrows on it.

Drop down the option buttons for these two text fields, make your selection and then click on the button with the arrows on it.

If anyone knows a quicker way then feel free to respond. :)

  12. I feel a right divvy

I have been trying to get my digital camera, a Fuji Finepix 401, to work for ages with no luck and resorted to buying a separate smartmedia card reader in order to download the pictures.

However yesterday I was mooching around at home and came across the box it came in. When I picked it up something inside rattled. Investigation revealed a second USB cable. This cable, rather than connecting the docking cradle, connects to the small USB socket on the side of the camera.

So I plugged the cable in to the computer then into the camera and then turned the camera on and bingo up came the icon for /mnt/removable. :?

So, if anyone out there is looking at buying this camera, although it has been superceded by now no doubt, they can take heart that it will work with 9.1 but without the cradle which is no big deal.

  13. Good Evening,

I am trying to install a windows program using Wine and am getting an

werror message. Can anyone explain what I need to do please.

The program I am trying to install is Family Tree Maker 9.0 (FTM)

I have installed Wine20030618 and have loaded the FTM Cd into the CD drive.

Then I opened a shell and typed:

    wine /mnt/cdrom2/autorun.exe

This produces the following error message:

    Anyone have any suggestions

  14. kmack........

i had the same thing happen with OOo1.1 final. i heard (& read) that it's supposed to integrate with KDE, but it was a no go for me, too. i also installed to /opt where my old version was in /usr/lib, so i don't know if that made a difference. unless somebody has a different solution, you just need to use menudrake to change the run commands. note, that with this version of OOo the command syntax has changed. in older versions of OOo, to run "writer" (for instance) the command was "oowriter" it is now "swriter". (without "quotes") that goes for all the OOo programs now. so, they would be like this....

    swriter

    soffice

    simpress

    smath

    scalc

    etc.........

    hope that helps a bit.........

    Chris

S'funny, I'm currently using OO1.0.3 and I've always had to use swriter etc to load the programs, and this has been the case for every previous version I have installed and used.

  15. Just thought I'd let everyone know about a mouse that I bought recently.

I was on holiday in the UK recently and whilst there I popped into a local computer store and purchased a wireless mouse. It's labelled as a Mercury mouse and is produced by a company called Kobian.

It comes with the usual Windows driver disk and a two page, A5 instruction sheet telling you how to load the driver and setup the buttons.

No mention of Linux was made on the box only all the Windows variants and I bought it on the off chance that it would work.

Once home I removed my existing PS2 mouse, plugged in the receiver, powered up and lo and behold it worked first time :)

It has two extra buttons, one on each side, not sure how to program those yet though.

Just thought I'd pass that on in case anyone else was looking at one.

  16. OK!  Thanks again!  That is what I figured, but I didn't like the fact that the mindi CD wasn't booting into lilo.  Guess it doesn't like the mdk version or something.

I'll try going on with mondo and see how it goes.

    Blessings to you!

I don't think it's supposed to, but I may be wrong. I thought it was only supposed to give a command prompt. According to the PDF docs:

    /quote

Mindi Linux creates a set of boot/root floppy disk images that will let you perform basic system maintenance on your Linux distro. The principle virtues of Mindi's boot disks are the fact that they contain your kernel, modules, tools and libraries.

    /unquote

  17. Daveleh: Thanks for your thought and effort to help!

Yes, I have that HOW TO file but it doesn't tell me what to do at the prompt.  Since on boot it just says:

    boot:

I am a bit baffled.

If I remember correctly from when I first started using Mondrescue that was all I did, created the Mindi disk, rebooted, got the boot: prompt which proved Mindi worked, then removed the CD, rebooted and proceeded to backup my system.

Once this was completed I rebooted with my backup CD, typed compare at the boot: prompt and waited for the two systems, my original and the backup, to be checked against each other. The docs tell you that some files won't match but you can check those out in a logfile.

  18. Just installed mindi and mondo backup software.  Instructions are to test the mindi rescue cd. I booted with the cd and get a prompt that is just
    boot:

Tried typing <linux> w/ no brackets of course and no luck. Tried lang=us like Knoppix uses no luck either. I cannot seem to find any instructions in the docs or online concerning how to proceed at the boot: line.

Can someone please point me to a man page or instructions on how this works? TIA!

Check out the docs, which can be found as a pdf file at http://www.chem.vu.nl/~stol/Mondo-Rescue-M...Linux-HOWTO.pdf .

In Chapter 2 - Quick Start it says:

/quote Reboot your system with the created Mindi CD, with the BIOS set to do boot from CD. If the result is a command line in 'Expert' mode, your system checks out. Remove the CD and reboot your system /unquote

    Hope that helps

  19. Just read a review of it in the new Linux Format mag.  It sounds like something I would like.  I used quicken a few years ago, but I probably won't use it again since they don't care about linux.  I used gnucash for a couple of months about a year ago, but I didn't like the way it cluttered up your machine with files.

I think I'll try out the MoneyDance one and see what its like.

I use Moneydance myself and find it more than adequate for my home needs.

Download the trial version from www.moneydance.com , play around with it using test or partial real data and then if you like it purchase the activation code. The trial version is the full version restricted to , I think, 100 entries.

If you get stuck subscribe to their mailing list and just ask, the developer Sean Reilly regularly make an appearance so questions can be posed to him.
