  1. i recently switched from kde to gnome, for a list of reason, and decided it would pobably be better if i used gnome-ppp instead of kppp. but i cant get it to connect, i just get an error message in the log about no msn/eaz being set. i know my msn number but i cant figure out how to set it. can anyone help?? im using isdn btw
  2. ok i fixed it, it turns out i accidentaly deleted a ":" in /etc/shadow. but i still dont know what happened. im positive it changed because i went from haveing no root password (yes i know its probably not a good idea) to haveing a root password, the only hing i did was install gstreamer and rhythm box with urpmi
  3. I went out for a few days, leaving my computer on, and when i get back my root password has changed :S i dont know how or why it changed but it did. ive been googling etc for quite some time and i cant seem to find any way to recover my root password that works. i tried editing /etc/shadow by using the console from the mandrake 10 recovery cd but that didnt seem to work. another method i found was to use "passwd root" after booting into linux using "linux single" in lilo, but i dont know how to start the computer using "linux single" because i dont have a prompt in lilo on this machine, just a menu thing. can any one help??
  4. well that was frustratingly easy, it turns out it was my mouse theme that caused it, i launched the kde configuration thing from fluxbox and changed my mouse theme back to the default. i dont know why this happened though, im guessing the theme is broken but i cudnt say why
  5. im using 10 OE and kde 3.2.3, i updated using the mandrake rpms on kde.org. i ran that command from within fluxbox..does that make a differece?? sorry about the posts :)
  6. oops i forgot to add. i tried other window managers aside from kwin, metacity worked nicely except for i have the same problem msegmentaion fault after segmentation fault
  7. and on further inspection its a segmentation fault that causes the crash. and on even further inspection it only crashes when i click on a window decoration.
  8. well i recently changed my mouse theme. what hapens is after i log in its fine for about a second. then window decorations dissapear. and certain things wont load past that point, kppp, amarok, and kopete to name a few. and her is the output of "ps" PID TTY TIME CMD 5999 pts/1 00:00:00 bash 6032 pts/1 00:00:00 ps thanks for the help
  9. when i start kde it seems to start up fine...but then as soon as its finished loading up and all my previous apps have loaded etc kwin just dies and i dont know why. could anyone shed any light on this before i turn to gnome or fluxbox in frustration. dont get me wrong i love kde, it just keeps on breaking
  10. ive installed apollon using the all in one installer and i also installed the openft and fasttrak protocols, i panicked a bit when i cudnt find the fasttrack plugin after instlal but i soon found it and was able to search the fasttrack network. my problem is i cant download anything, not a single thing. the downloads appear in the transfer window but then nothing happens, if i look at the connected users under the progress column it says paused, if i pause the download and resume it it begins to look like its doing something but then just goes back to how it was before, has anyone else had this problem and been able to fix it??
  11. i know thatll work because just launching konqueror works fine. the problem with that then is im not sure you can use profile arguements like you can when using kfmclient so i have to swithc the profile to file management every time i use it
  12. when i try to run konqueror by clicking on my home button nothing happens, using "kfmclient" in a terminal fails due to a missing konqueror.desktop file but if i try to launch konqueror from the terminal with "konqueror" it works fine. any ideas??
  13. ok i removed kde and am installing the mandrake rpms from kde.org which werent there before i started with cooker... using a different user didnt change nething btw but i guess that doesnt matter not :), thanks anyway
  14. rpms, 3.2 to 3.2.3 using cooker which was probably pretty stupid but i cudnt find anything else that was 3.2.x on rpms and source seemed like a dpendency headache :)
  15. i just updated kde and it wont start from the login manager so i tied starting from fluxbox. this is what i get when i try startkde in fluxbox, (ignore the kwin bit thats just cause i got fluxbox running) xset: bad font path element (#181), possible causes are: Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions Directory missing fonts.dir Incorrect font server address or syntax xset: bad font path element (#181), possible causes are: Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions Directory missing fonts.dir Incorrect font server address or syntax startkde: Starting up... kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /home/bruce/.kde/share/icons/Alth eae/ group not valid. ksplash: WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passe d to the constructor! 16. ok i tried starting another X display by doing "X :1.0" and then running "startkde" in that display which just fails but no errors are displayed, it basically just stalls.
  17. i updated kde to 3.2.3 using urpmi and cooker, except now when i try to start kde the splash screen goes as normal then nothing happens. from a terminal in fluxbox i tried to start kicker and got this error relocation error: /usr/lib/libkonq.so.4 i get the same error when trying to start konqueror. anyone got any ideas??
  18. cool, well i set cooker up in urpmi, looks like i gotta change to xorg first. now if only urpmi wud finish before my isp decides its time to disconnect me
  19. im using mandrake 10 oe, whats the ebst way of going about updateing kde 3.2 to 3.2.3...and come to think of it, is it really worth it??
  20. i tried the notepad program that the wine package installs and that didnt work, i tried a learner driving program on a cd of mine and that did the same thing
  21. nah i know that much, when u install the packages, they automatically add some shortcuts to the menu, when they didnt work i tried it in a terminal and that just did nothing either
  22. when i try to run wine it doesnt. simple as that. im using mandrake 10 OE and installed wine off the cd's. any1 know how to fix this??

    ISDN Problems

well if your using mandrake 10... i had massive problems trying to get isdn to work with the new linux kernel (2.6) i even broke down and learned how to compile a kernel (instead of using mandrake rpms) and to my dispair it didnt work. the only solution i found was to downgrade to kernel 2.4, the rpms are on the mandrake cd
  24. ive been trying to get my ISDN card to work in kernel 2.6 for ages now. ive got to the point where the HISAX module loads BUT now /dev/ippp0 isnt present, is there anyway i can get it to be there i have no idea what to do next
  25. i recently installed an isdn card onto my mandrake 9.1 system so i could use it as a router for some other computers. but after installing the isdn my system refused to detect my network card. theres an error at boot but it mocves to fast for me to read it, is there some kind of log i can check?? the network card worked fine before so i dont know whats wrong with it now
