  1. Time for the readme or a trip to x.mame.net. You have to add modelines in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file that states what resolutions X has to choose from. The site and the readme for xmame explains everything. As for frontends, I use Grustibus but there's another good one out there..the name escapes me at the moment.
  2. Mandrake 9 ships with gcc3.x which is alot different than gcc 2.96. Every package in 9 has been compiled with the new compiler. Mandrake includes 2.96 on the cd's for compatibility so you can compile older apps that haven't been updated to compile with the new version of gcc. Just launch rpmdrake, type in gcc and you'll see what I'm talking about.
  3. Really, why bother with counterstrike when there's urban terror? Nothing beats native gaming.
  4. I think it's on your cd's or on rpmfind.net. I guess it's not ready for gcc3. You can try installing the old gcc 2.96 stuff with rpmdrake (software manager) and rebuilding it if you're hard headed.
  5. Works fine on my computer unless I try to go fullscreen. Don't know what it is about these new nvidia drivers but it hard locks my machine if xmame goes fullscreen at 640x480. I'm gonna play with it a little tonight.
  6. Mame is the multiple arcade machine emulator. The roms are actual rom images from real arcade machines. With Xmame (in linux) and a mame rom, you can play the real arcade game, and it's exact, down to every last sound effect and fireball punch. There are thousands of roms available for nearly any game you can name. It's definitely a good way to burn time if you love old and some new arcade games. I'd consider investing in a linux-friendly joystick or gamepad for maximum enjoyment though.
  7. Glad you pointed that out. It's back up now..power failure or something I guess, not real sure what happened. I'll look at the logs and figure it out. >>edit Ok, it has been mysteriously rebooted twice over the past two days. I'll check with my friend who runs the office. At any rate, when it reboots, the proftpd service was set to 'manual' so it wasn't magically coming back online with everything else. Thanks for the heads up, it'll work perfect from here on out.

    Geforce 4

The Download Edition of 8.2 doesn't come with the nvidia binary drivers, only the version you buy boxed online or in retail stores comes with them. That's probably why you've never had this problem.
  9. Throughout the betas and rc's, I never upgrade. I always preserve my /home partition and format all other partitions. This way I don't have to deal with first-time wizards, mail settings or preferences on anything. Also I get a cleaner install than an upgrade would give me (except for preferences for some programs). If everything is set the way you like it and you keep any extra programs you added in a folder in your /home/whoever directory, it's a good idea to fresh install like me. Not real helpful, I know, but good advice nonetheless. :)

    Geforce 4

Mine did too but I'm talking about all this stuff: Section "Module" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" # 3D layer EndSection Now that I think about it...all of those except freetype and glx were there in 7.2, 8.1 and 8.2 (or whichever version shipped with XFree4). They were just scattered across separate lines. Much cleaner this way.

    Geforce 4

This won't be an issue for whoever buys the boxed set according to Ranger and Deno. Even if it's not detected as the *right* Geforce, as long as you pick Geforce the nvidia-supplied binaries will work. Any Geforce or tnt2 uses the Driver "nvidia" and the kernel module/glx module. Isn't it weird how Mandrake started putting tons of default options in the /etc/X1/XF86Config-4 file since the first 9 beta? There are glx options in there, v4l, bla bla, about 6 or 7. Before there was only one, the dbe thing.
  12. If all else fails, you can probably 'urpmi' it. Still need to know what lib it's missing, and it's somewhere above that error..I suggest you post about 20 lines preceding the 'death' message you posted before.

    Geforce 4

Same here. RC3 doesn't properly recognize this card 'out of the box'. X won't start at all. If you plan on getting one, do this: 1. download the .src.rpms for the nvidia kernel and glx. 2. put them somewhere you'll remember, like /home/whoever/nvidia 3. during the RC3 install, do an expert install and tick the development package group during package selection. pick nvidia whatever towards the end..don't worry if the test of X fails. make sure kde or whatever does not start, you don't want it trying to start x on your first boot 4. on first boot, go into the nvidia folder you made and su to root. issue the rpm --rebuild command to the src.rpms one at a time..they should build fine. 5. go into /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586 and rpm -Uvh the new rpms it built. do the kernel rpm first. 6. use vi or emacs or whatever to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. only thing you need to change is the line Driver "nv". change it to Driver "nvidia" 7. save the edited file..type startx and witness the magic. This process works for any unknown geforce. I tried to pester mandrake during the beta period but my info fell on blind eyes. My card is recognized as an nv25 chipset..mandrake rc3 just doesn't know what it is. It thinks it's a geforce but has no clue which one. Anyway, with this process you can do it yourself.
  14. Well, the really important messages preceded that..you're missing at least one lib.
  15. Don't use X and it'll serve you forever. Router, firewall, apache server, file slave..you name it. I have some nice p200 servers that just won't quit. You might know them as supermame and mdkxp. If you want to use X on that box, do some remote forwarding magic. All you need is another machine on the network and the sshd server running on the target machine. Type a command from the commandline on the remote machine (after logging in via ssh) and it'll pop up the graphical app on your screen, forwarded from the server. This is very handy for rpmdrake, harddrake, or mandrake control center. Best way to run a headless server next to webmin.
  16. Supermame is my site containing all known and working mame roms. You can search here: http://supermame.by-a.com then download from here: ftp://supermame.by-a.com The login is mameleech and the password is canigetsome . The ftp server is setup to accept 3 connections from any account simultaneously, and each connection is throttled at 10KB/sec. Have to do this until it gets moved to the OC3 connection elsewhere. The cool thing is, if you have a downloading utility, you can login 2 or 3 times and combine the bandwidth to pull down the big ones you want. If others are on, well, you just have to share. I felt this was the most fair way to set it up. Post up if you have any questions. (now taking bets on how many people are gonna click my avatar just to see what happens muahah)
