  1. ok i have found that it plays cds just fine but no type of file (aka wave, wma, mp3, etc) on their site they say that 1.2.10 is supposed to fix that so i dont understand. Should i submit a bugzilla report, does anyone out there have XMMS? what version do you use? has it ever abnormally terminated when it tried to play mp3?
  2. good :) so all i have to do is image the drive to one of my other harddrives from XP then if i ever needed to redo my harddrive i just flash it on to my linux drive, then use the boot disk to fix the bootloader right?
  3. ya i know, i used ghost with windows all the time, it is great, but lasttime i tried to image the hardrive, everything worked fine in the imaging process, but then when i tried to do a restore, lilo did not come up when my comp tried to boot, it just said: L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 ................................................................................ ............................ 99 99 99 99 99 just the L and then a ton of 99s at that point i reinstalled mandrake, i never thought to use the restore cd to fix the boot loader, but i don know if that would have worked...
  4. does anyone know (or have they had experience with) the "dump" command? i was reading in my Red Hat Linux 9 Bible about backing up a linux system and it said that the dump command is an intrinsic part of linux that dates back to UNIX. so i have a whole section on all the options on how to use it, and where to download it from if i dont have it. but i was just wondering if anyone had any experience....
  5. that is what i would do, if there are that many problems, try downloading the isos from another mirror (not that it would make a difference) then just totally wipe the disk and restart (personally i like doing this everyonce and a while (this is because i was forced to do this every month, @the end of the month for my XP machine) but now i am looking forward to downloading Mandrake 10 OE and then once i get everything the way i like it, i will use the dump command to make a backup of my drive, and that will be it B)
  6. i am using mandrake 10 community right now, and i have had none of those problems, i have only had problems when i try to do something that i shouldnt (b/c im a noob) other that that i have had no problems....and i am a long time XP user....so

  8. i have read that is is possible to use xscreensaver in kde and/or add all of xscreensaver's screensavers to the KDE applet, or add all of KDE's screensavers to xscreensavers list. Is this possible? I would really like to keep using the kde applet so i can just right click on the desktop to configure my screensaver. What are the steps do this?

    VNC/Rdesktop

i use tight VNC and it works in real time, the only problem is that when i have the firewall on linux, i cannot access my linuxbox from remote machines (aka i dont know what to do to give tight vnc a passthrough on the firewall)
  10. ok i know that.... what i did is first i tried about 10 times to log on, as soon as i got to that screen wait about 5mins if nothing happens, shut the computer off by holding the power button to crash it, then when linux is loading again, do the file system check, then let it come to that screen again, if your WM does not come up then leave it like that, shut your monitor off and leave it overnight, (this is what i did) and when i woke up in the morning, to my suprise i found that KDE was up and running with the screensaver. once i got there, i shut off auto login (i believe that is what caused the crash) and then made sure i had everything updated, then i ended my session and then the login screen was there, logged back in and then restarted my comp and everything has worked fine!!! hope that works for you too :) (it is a very unorthodox method, but it worked for me)
  11. ya it looks like GHOST, i wonder what went wrong when i tried to restore it>>?
  12. i had the same thing happen to me just a couple of days ago, i had to go in and remove kde and reinstall it using the urpme and the urpmi commands, there are some steps in the topic "I THINK I KILLED KDE 3.2" leme guess, is it right when the login screen is supposed to come up? and the mouse is there but it is an "X" instead of a pointer? ( i tried leaving it overnight once like that on the blue screen, and when i woke up, i was in KDE) Do you have it on auto login?
  13. Now that i have everything on my computer just the way i like it is there a way i can do a backup of it? I tried using Norton Ghost 2004 before and it did not work ( at least i know that it messed up the bootloader, and i never tried using the rescue disk to reinstall it) but i have seen this mandrake backup center and i was wondering if i could do an image on my drive like i do in Ghost and back it up to a hardrive?
  14. I installed all of the XMMS stuff but it still crashes , ummm im going to try andiff program just to make sure it is not something wrong with the file, i have been having some harddrive corruption on the drive that i store them on EDIT: it is not the files i am using Noatun and they all work fine and with all of my speakers might i add, i am so happy
  15. Thanks everyone you all have been a great help to this noob!!!!!!
  16. Back to Xmms real quick i downloaded it using urpmi and my sources only held the old version 1.2.9 or something like that, and it has bugs, i went to xmms's web site and they have vers 1.2.10 that fixes that problem they only have red hat binaries and fedoria but no mandrake... is it ok to use red hat? and on a curious note when i try to do the tar ball ./config now (i downloaded glib-devel) now it says this: checking for pthread.h... yes checking for glib-config... /usr/bin/glib-config checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.2... yes checking for gtk-config... no checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.2... no *** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found *** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to gtk-config. configure: error: *** GTK+ >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first *** [root@localhost xmms-1.2.10]# urpmi GTK The following packages contain GTK: libwxPythonGTK2.4 libwxPythonGTK2.4-devel perl-GTK perl-GTK-GLArea perl-GTK-GdkImlib perl-GTK-GdkPixbuf perl-GTK-Glade perl-GTK-Gnome perl-GTK-GtkHTML wxGTK2.5 wxPythonGTK [root@localhost xmms-1.2.10] which one of those packages do i want?
  17. WOW, i never realized what a great player that is, i is much better that any windows player, there is no jerking at all, and the surround sound is great on it too B)
  18. ok it works great with my surround sound and everything.....thx
  19. ok i got xine player now do i need libdvdcss to read dvds? i tried to urpmi it and no package was found but i downloaded it and ill install it manually
  20. ok, i have seen xine-ui in the urpmi list in the terminal... ill try
  21. i got everything to work, i just uninstalled the kernel-source-2.6.3-9mdk that was already on my comp and reinstalled it and now i am using the newer kernel: [david@localhost david]$ glxgears 20291 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4058.200 FPS 23556 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4711.200 FPS 23530 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4706.000 FPS 24195 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4839.000 FPS X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). [david@localhost david]$ uname -r 2.6.3-9mdk [david@localhost david]$ that top part is the glxgears FPS but just curious, when i did those, yes i get high fps but the gears looked as though they just vibrated, and didnt acually rotate. Is this a problem or is this just b/c the FPS is so high? B)
  22. if i also wanted to install the XINE player (i had a bad time when i tried to download it from its website last time) how would i do this, i know that there are already parts of the xine player that come with kde but i donot see the player...
  23. hmm i installed the kernel and in my lilo boot manager i see linux-enterprise (that is the one i am using WHAT DOES THE ENTERPRISE MEAN?) and then way down at the bottom i saw 263-9 so i clicked that one, i did download the IA32 drivers from nvidia right before i did this and tried to install there was a proble but it was something about it not being able to compiile but i checked to make sure i had the correct kernel and i checked to make sure i had the correct kernel source, i guess i can uninstall and reinstall the kernel source b/c i dont ever remember downloading it or urpmi-ing it so.... there is also another driver for nvidia the IA64 driver but when i click on it to download the code for it pops up in my browser and i cannot save it, what is the difference btw the two?
  24. btw it did this when i did ./configure
  25. checking for pthread.h... yes checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.2... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first *** [root@localhost xmms-1.2.10]# urpmi glib-config no package named glib-config [root@localhost xmms-1.2.10]# urpmi glib Everything already installed [root@localhost xmms-1.2.10]#
