  1. ok, I figured out that I had one computer that had nfs-utils installed and the other one did not. So I urpmi'd nfs-utils, rebooted both computers and finally it worked.... sort of.

    Now what is happening is that if I mount my /home directory on my second computer BOTH linux installations begin to act strange. By that I mean that I can only open ONE instance of a program, any program. If I try to open a second instance of the same program it shows like it is starting up in the taskbar for about 5 seconds and then it disappears and nothing happens. Any ideas on what this could be? Both computers are using KDE? Maybe I should use KDE on one and gnome on the other?

    :wall:

  2. ok. I have edited my /etc/exports file to include all of the directories that I want to mount over the network. I have also checked in MCC->System->Services and nfs is started and has a check to start on boot as does portmap.

    From searching around google I have seen articles talk about exportfs, rpc.mountd, rpc.statd etc however I do not have these on my system?!?

    When I try to mount from PC 1 to PC 2 I get:

    mount: 192.168.1.142:/mnt/Video3 failed, reason given by server: Permission

    denied

    and when I try to mount from PC 2 to PC 1 I get:

    mount: RPC: Program not registered

    ????

  3. Basically I have stumbled across a second computer and I would like one to be a server for my website and the second to be for my home computing stuff. However, this is where it gets tricky (IMHO) I would like to have my home, Pictures, Music and Video directories mounted on both systems at the same time so that a change on one shows up on the other.

    I am not new to linux but I am new to networking and Samba which I think is what I need to accomplish this. My question is this: Is this a good idea? Has anyone done this or is currently doing this?

    My setup will be behind a linksys firewall. Any input would be helpful. :P

  4. PLEASE TRY TO BREAK THIS CODE. Then let me know as much detail as possible so that I can try to make this code as robust as possible.

    To Do: For the next release I would like to create a configure.sh file to help the user understand the importance of dependencies and which ones they are missing.

    Please provide feedback, my email is listed in the README file. Good and bad, I don't care I just want to know if anyone else uses this and if they do how it has worked for them.

    The README file contains a ton of information, please read!

    Enjoy!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

  5. I have only had DSL for two weeks, and because I finally have DSL I have set up a web server, ftp server and sshd server. Well I finally got around to looking at some log files, specifically /var/log/auth.log and I found a 768k 282 page file filled with this crap:

    Sep 24 14:17:36 mandrake sshd(pam_unix)[6541]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=211.252.143.252  user=root

    Sep 24 14:17:38 mandrake sshd[6541]: Failed password for root from ::ffff:211.252.143.252 port 39071 ssh2

    Sep 24 14:17:40 mandrake sshd(pam_unix)[6543]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=211.252.143.252  user=root

    Sep 24 14:17:42 mandrake sshd[6543]: Failed password for root from ::ffff:211.252.143.252 port 39166 ssh2

    Sep 24 14:17:44 mandrake sshd(pam_unix)[6545]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=211.252.143.252  user=root

    Sep 24 14:17:47 mandrake sshd[6545]: Failed password for root from ::ffff:211.252.143.252 port 39257 ssh2

    Sep 24 14:17:48 mandrake sshd(pam_unix)[6547]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=211.252.143.252  user=root

    As you can see there is a repeated pattern of sshd root login attempts about every two seconds. I don't think anyone has made it yet, but just the thought is ridiculous.

  6. I had the same problem when I had dial-up. It was trying to initialize a connection that didn't exist. Go to MCC->Network->Manage Connections(I think) and there should be a check box that says 'enable at boot'. Just uncheck this and you should be ok.

    If you actually do have dsl/cable service, then the story is different.

  7. My ssh port (22) is turned off by default, and I would like to know how to enable it. I went to MCC->Security->Firewall and the checkbox that says enable everything was checked. However I then went to Shields Up and that showed that the port was closed. And when I try to ssh into my computer it says that the connection was refused. Any ideas?

  8. I have just set up proftpd on my home computer and I am trying to access it from work but I can't and I think it has to do with the proxy server because on my home computer I could ftp-in and change directories, upload files etc.

    I also think this because I can not hit ftp.kernel.org either from work, but I can from home.

    Does anyone know how to ftp around a proxy server? :unsure:

  9. Well if I go into MCC, I first choose ADSL. Then I select between eth0(VIA Chipset) and eth1(NIC card). Next I enter the provider name, DNS servers, username and password. Then it asks me if I want to start this connection when I boot which I do and finally it asks if I want to restart the network connection which I do. Then after about 5 seconds it states that it was successful, however I still have no dsl access to the internet. My previous postings had ifconfig for eth0 and eth1 which is the output AFTER I set up eth0/1 in MCC. I don't know where to go from here. :o

  10. Can't get dsl working.

    My NIC: ADM983 Linksys EtherFast 10/100 and the module is tulip which loads during boot

    When I go to network in MCC it lists eth0 as VIA Technologies(VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133]) which seems odd to me since that is my chipset and not my NIC, but this is my FIRST time setting up dsl so what do I know. Eth1 is listed as my NIC which again is ADM983 Linksys EtherFast 10/100.

    In MCC I set both up exactly the same.

    Provider name: sbcglobal.net

    First DNS Server: 151.164.1.8

    Second DNS Server: 151.164.8.201

    Account Login: username@sbcglobal.net

    Account Password: ***********

    Then I run:

    ifconfig eth0
    eth0      Link encap:UNSPEC  HWaddr 00-D0-03-56-00-A5-19-A4-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
             UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
             RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
             TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
             collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
             RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

    and

    ifconfig eth1
    eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:04:5A:4D:2F:D1
             inet6 addr: fe80::204:5aff:fe4d:2fd1/64 Scope:Link
             UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
             RX packets:30 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
             TX packets:5 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
             collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
             RX bytes:1800 (1.7 Kb)  TX bytes:378 (378.0 B)
             Interrupt:9 Base address:0xee00

    Both have UP next to broadcast and yet I get nothing. Even something as simple as typing http://192.168.0.1 in firefox does not get me anywhere. Can't ping it either. :wall:

    Like I said earlier, I am a dsl noobie but am decent otherwise, any help is obviously very appreciated.

  11. I have recently updated the main program to be more 'gnu' like. I also added some functionality which allows a menu to be created automatically with some optional background music. :headbang:

    I want to run one more test with it before I post the code here, so probably within a week or so I'll have the latest version of the code posted. So far though, I am very pleased with the results. It's nice to plug in the camcorder, specify a few options and x hours later have a perfectly burned DVD home video with menus, music, etc.

    Please provide feedback if you have used this code, I would enjoy your comments and suggestions! :D
