  1. Hello, I 'm using MD Linux for a little while and become more familiar with in using it. Now that I understand Linux a little bit more I want to start to write my one applications (small ones for start). What is de best programming language to start with, inclusive with a GUI? In my case this is KDE. Also want to know where I can get it/download it. I have (some) experience with C/C++, Basic and Pascal, but all in a Windows environment. I have MD Linux 8.0 with KDE 2.2.2; system is an AMD Athlon 1300 MHz with 512 MB.
  2. Recently I installed OpenOffice 1.0.2. Now, I want to put a shortcut or link (speaking in MS-windows terms) in de Start-menu of KDE (the icon wth the big K) under the group office. How do I do this? Also, I want to remove the shortcut to StarOffice 5.2. How in general one can add or remove an item or group to the menu of KDE desktop?
  3. I couldn't find in the user's instruction how to find out which font is currently used for the screen. So, please, if someone who is familiar with OO can tell me? And Andale sans UI is defently not shown on my system in the list under font replacement.
  4. The reason I asked the question, about finding out which font is currently used is the fact that 'Andale Sans UI' is not shown in the list of avialable fonts in the window of 'Font Replacement'. So how can I replace a font that I don't know or isn't listed?
  5. Hello, Recently, I installed OpenOffice 1.0.2 [OO]. The font that is used for the screen is just worse. I find out that a font can be changed via Tools -> Options -> Font Replacement. But how do I know which font has to be replaced? Where in OO can I see what kind of font(s) is/are used for the screen?
  6. Thanks for those reaction. I think its clear now: additional a minimum of 128 MB or even 256 MB is recommended. I will soon buy some.
  7. I have an AMD-based PC with 128 MB PC133 (SDRAM) of memory and running under LM 8.0. I want to increase the memory with another 128 MB or 256 MB module. Is this speeding up Linux? But more important: will Linux used all the memory above 128 MB? So, is it usefull? I know that for Windows it is not usefull to put more memory in your PC, because it uses not more than 128 MB (unless your are doing video-editing).
  8. In the past I installed java runtime environment 1.3.1. It was a compressed file (no rmp). After decompressied it, I installed it succesfully. Now, I want to install a newer version of java, 1.4.1, and downloaded the rpm-file from sun's website. Before, I run this rpm-file I want to uninstall 1.3.1. How do I do this? Can the rpm-file of java 1.4.1 (JRE2) be installed on a Mandrake distribution (LM 8.0) or do I need a rpm-file specially build for Mandrake? When yes, where can I find it?
  9. mtweidmann) I looked in Kpackage and in there I see the right version number of those packages I updated. It seems that Software Manager not autmatically updated his own list. Ixthusdan) I used rpm. bvc) I will try this asap and will let you know.
  10. I did some small upgrades (gcc and glibc) via the RPM-tool in, I think it is called, a terminal (like the dos-box of windows). In the past I rode a tip on this forum about upgrading via the RPM-tool instead of using one of the two KDE-versions. My question is: When I look in Software Manager and search for 'gcc' in the installed-session of that it, I still see the old version. It seams that Software Manager is not synchronized with the actual list of versions. How can I synchronize the list in Software Manager with the information I got when using the RPM-tool in a terminal?
  11. Hello, I have a PC (AMD Athlon 1300, memory 128 MB, 45 MB HDD ATA 100) with ML 8.0 running on it. Also, I have a laptop with window-98. What I want is having remote control of my PC on my laptop (with windows-98 ) via a network connection (ethernet). For example, at my work we take remote control of the servers (windows NT4) via a workstation (also window NT4) with eiter VNC or Netmeeting. My question is: *) what are to possibilities for remote control of linux system on a windows based system? *) are their applications like netmeeting, PCAnywhere, etc for linux? *) and can a connections be established between a windows system and a linux system (via a remote control applications)?
