  1. No, just open a terminal (konsole in KDE) and run it.
  2. Using your gui package manager or urpmi, install lm-sensors and ksensors or superkaramba. Then as root run sensors-detect and follow the instructions. Then open ksensors or superkaramba and set it up.
  3. Congrats! Here are some sources of information (these are not Mandriva specific, but Linux) that I have used: TLDP Directory of Linux Commands here's a good book: Linux in a Nutshell here's the Mandriva wiki: wiki.mandriva and we're also here. :)
  4. I'm aware of this. All I'm trying to do at this point is get Berr up and running with Mandriva. I do not want to confuse him with any more partitions at this time. :) But, for the record this system: [greg@halfway ~]$ df; free -m |grep -i swap Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda1 7.1G 4.3G 2.5G 64% / /dev/hda6 84G 24G 61G 28% /home /dev/hdb1 57G 17G 37G 32% /mnt/storage Swap: 1129 0 1129 has three different dev environments setup and for my spare time, Doom3 and Quake4 are installed (pak files are symlinked in). Last but not least, I use logrotate weekly via anacron.
  5. You have all the modules loaded and you have the permissions, so let's try it. :)
  6. Before we go any further with this, I'm assuming that you're using Vista on sda? So just in case, here is some info that you may need: repair startup issues in Windows Vista I would suggest that since we are sure that at least part of the problem is lack of partition space: That you d/l the SystemRescueCd iso and burn it to a CD. Then boot that CD and use Gparted to remove any existing partitions and make one single ext3 partition of the sdb drive. Please read the SystemRescueCd manual. Then try to install your Mandriva system again. When you get to the drakX partitioning wizard, select 'custom disk partitioning'. Follow the instructions and make the first partition: / ext3 - at least 7GB in size and no more than 9GB (you will never use more than that amount) then make the second partition: swap - I would only use 1GB here then make the third partition: /home - ext3 make this as large as you want (you could simply use the rest of that drive) So when you've finished it should look something like this: / swap /home Please let us know if you have any question or problems.
  7. If you have an available PCI slot, it will (or should :)) support it.
  8. Viking is correct about that error possibly being the problem, but it sounds like you've installed the system previously (without any problems) using that media. I would like you to tell us all you know about your system hardware. What SATA DVDRW model are you using? Did you purchase the boxed set of Mandriva 2008.1 or d/l it with a subscription? When you first installed Mandriva 2008.1 did you just upgrade the 2008 system, or do a clean HDD format and install?
  9. I'm not sure how you have done this. This [margit@localhost ~]$ arecord -l arecord: device_list:207: no soundcards found... and this [root@localhost ~]# ls -l /dev/dsp ls: /dev/dsp: No such file or directory are telling us that someone has stolen your soundcard (or your permission to use it), or you are not loading the proper drivers. So, please post the output of grep -i audio /etc/group and id and (as root) lsmod |grep -i snd
  10. You should only have to run 'alsactl store' once: After you have adjusted everything and have working sound, then (as root) run alsactl store Then 'alsactl restore' will (should) be automatically run at each boot by your system.
  11. Please post the output of grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf and arecord -l and /usr/bin/artsshell status and (as root) ls -l /dev/dsp You may simply have to run 'alsaconf' as root to fix this.
  12. That's probably what happened jkerr. I didn't think of that, thanks!

    video not running

What video formats are not working for you?
  14. This was posted for Ubuntu, but it looks like it should work for your Mandriva system: GUI Interface for Verizon PC5750 It's also done with an Acer Aspire.
  15. Try unplugging your Sony Walkman or whatever else is attached to USB, then try again.
  16. At what point did that happen, as soon as you booted the DVD or what? Can you hit Alt+F3 or Alt+F4 and take a pic?
  17. I don't believe they're that large, are they? :) tyme beat me to it. :P
  18. I would suggest that you reinstall your system. I think it will be the easiest and safest way for you to fix this. When you get to the drakX partitioning wizard, select 'custom disk partitioning'. How much RAM does your system have?
  19. Yes, I was noticing that too. Do you have two HDD? I don't see anything close to 4.4GB in /var/log, but I can't see it all in that pic.
  20. We don't know how large his / partition is yet, so it may be full. I believe that he should determine if it is full or not, before he tries to repair the file system. :) @ Berr- Please give us the output of df that medo had already asked for.

    video not running

What video card do you have? Have you installed the proper video driver for that card? Do you have 3D desktop effects enabled, if so, please disable them and try to play a video.
  22. OK, I have one more request. Please start it with [greg@apus temp-vid]$ mplayer pole_climb1.mp4 MPlayer 1.0-1.rc2.10plf2008.1-4.2.2 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team -snip- ========================================================================== Trying to force audio codec driver family libmad... Opening audio decoder: [pcm] Uncompressed PCM audio decoder AUDIO: 8000 Hz, 1 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/100.00% (ratio: 16000->16000) Selected audio codec: [pcm] afm: pcm (Uncompressed PCM) ========================================================================== AO: [pulse] 8000Hz 1ch s16le (2 bytes per sample) Starting playback... -snip- and post the output for us to compare. I really hate to give up! :)
  23. I'm running out of ideas. Please start kaffeine from the cli, then open the mp4. Play the video for a bit, then close. What is in your terminal for the 'kaffeine: KXineWidget: Use audio driver alsa', do you see any errors?
  24. OK, it looks like the problem is /var, it's 4.4GB! It's probably log files caused by another problem somewhere. So (as root) do cd /var/log; rm messages syslog then try to reboot with shutdown -F -r now and we'll go from there. Let us know what happens?
