  1. A couple of things. 1)Sorry i wasn't able to test out the solutions earlier but I've been loaded down with finals and havn't been able to try out anythign till now. 2)I'm all for paying 5 bucks for a program. I'm not for paying 5 bucks for every month I plan to use the program. Thats what microsoft wants and frankly i'm not willing to pay tons of cash if I plan to use this program for years to come in addition to any windows games I plan on buying. 3)I created the directories as suggested and I got this error: wine: '/home/john/.wine/wineserver-aldur2' must not be accessible by other users I have no idea what it means by that. I tried going into root and saying the ownership was mine but the same error message came up. Any suggestions?
  2. note on above, this is when i put the following code in: wine /home/john/steaminstall.exe or any such piece of code.
  3. Can anyone please help me. No matter how I configure the wine x i get the following error: wine: chdir to /home/john/.wine/wineserver-aldur2 : No such file or directory What do I need to do to fix this problem?
  4. I tried what you said but konsole stated : wine: chdir to /home/john/.wine/wineserver-aldur2 : No such file or directory The install file i made, i could not figure out how to run it. Could this be the problem? If so could someone please tell me how to make it run
  5. Ok i got the install file created but what do i do with it? I tried double clicking it in gui to no effect and typing it in konsole. Do I need some special command or am I already done with it all and just need to run some executable file in the winex directory?
  6. I ran the code u said but i still got the exact same error when i tried to configure using the code : ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-x --enable-sdldrv --enable-opengl
  7. Everything worked great up to the point where i tried to configure the file. In konsole i got the following error: *** The sdl-config script installed by SDL could not be found *** If SDL was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the SDL_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to sdl-config. configure: error: *** SDL version 1.2.0 not found! i'm new at linux and unix so I have no idea what to do about this.
  8. Yes I am that dummy. I've looked at various how tos to download and install the winex cvs version but nothing has worked for me. I first tried the how-to on this forum but when i followed the step which states to open a konsole and tyepe cvs -d:pserver:cvs@cvs.transgaming.org:/cvsroot login i get a bash error where cvs is not found. I was at the website as told and did everything according to the how to. Then I downloaded WineX CVS from source forge (which i couldn't get anything to work under) and upgrade it to the transgaming version by what they said. But i had no idea what to do with the code once it loaded (i was told by one to copy paste it into konsole but what happened was it crashed) CAN ANYONE HELP ME?????????? I need either 1)help getting installing WineX CVS from scratch or 2)help upgrading from the sourceforge version.
  9. That does it. Thank you.
  10. One thing i love most about linux is the multple desktop function. However yesterday i was changing some icons and settings on the panel when i realized somehow the multiple desktop buttons were gone. After beating around for hours i was unable to restore them. Can someone please help me return them? mod note: moved from installing mandrake to software by tyme
  11. Works almost perfectly. With some of the opening previews for some reason my dvd will eject but if i just fast forward past them i don't seem to have any problems. Totem doesn't work but xine does so frankly thats enough for me. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! Now all i need to do is get winex cvs to work so i can leave windows for good.
  12. I found out what happened with evolution on my end. Somehow it was told to work offline and when i clicked an offline/online button on the bottem left corner it worked again. Dunno how that happened.....
  13. I've had no trouble using evolution to this date and the reason to why there is trouble is beyond me at this moment. One day i boot into mandrake 10 and start evolution mail. For some reason evolution won't let me send/recieve mail. The button isn't active. So i go to Kmail trying to understand the problem. Kmail stated my password was invalid for the server. After checking to see if my password was correct i reinput it into kmail and I was able to get my email. However this didn't work with evolution. I first purged all old passwords (no noticable effect) then i erased my account and remade it. Evolution still won't let me send/recieve mail as if some setting i have won't let it try. Can anyone help me on this?
  14. I tried to get the same results above using mandrake 10 but i got failure. Xine when trying to read the dvd just closed and totem had a file read error. I did everything from installing the rpms to using the command line that john stated but i have not had success. Can anyone help me further so i can play dvds with linux?
  15. found out how to do it. I went to diskdrake in the konsole and found out what my windows partitian was called. Then i just went in through folders etc to get there as if it was just a standard linux partitian.
  16. The thing about console gaming is that it bites. Look at it, the games they put out are usually over-simplified, short with lack of replyability On the other hand many computer games i'm still playing from before linux (egads....) Console systems also have a very poor interface. The controller is good only as far as the game is simple. Get to more complicated games like strategy or fps, u get to really mindnumbing adjustments just to not die every 10 seconds. Give me a mouse and keyboard any day of the week. I've never bought a console system for several reasons. 1)its too expensive for the limited purpose. I primarily use my computer for games but i also websearch, write papers, program, read books (pdf etc). None of these are done with the console, or done effeciently (with the newer consoles having some capabilities with websearching). I would do a google search for Linux Games. I've found plenty of sites that not only have free games but also comercial ports of popular windows games. Another solution is trying WineX which allows directx pc games to run in linux.
  17. Ok the windows partitian is in NTFS format and runs 2000(don't know if this part matters)
  18. I've been working with Mandrake Linux for several weeks now and am getting successes in most places but for some reason I can't get Mandrake to read a Windows partition on my computer. I use Mandrake 10 and have one 80 gig drive split between windows and linux. I want to be able to access several files on the windows drives (images, mp3s, etc) but can't. I tried to put them onto a cd-rw but for some reason mandrake didn't recognize it either. Any suggestions? Also i hope i'm in the right topic for this problem.
  19. as a clarification for number 2 i'm looking for the correct file format to download. i know how to utilize it if i can find the right file format.
  20. I'm a cronic windows user trying desperatly to learn linux (so i can leave windows once and for all) but i'm having difficulty with several programs. 1)With my dvds, everytime it runs fine with the fbi warning but after that it says "cannot read dvd". 2)When i got to a place like sourceforge.net to download some linux software, i get confused at all the various downloads available. I'm using Mandrake 10 and just want the download to use the program nothing more, what file format am i looking for? 3)i tried upgrading openoffice by opening the file and starting the setup program, but openoffice does not recognize another version exists (i know there is because i used openoffice via the menu) any help will be most appreciated so i can finally kiss windows goodbye.
