  1. First glance at the demo turned me away from using Cedegra. After a little toying I'm starting to like it. I can play games as well if not better in linux than windows (and thats with the annoying flashing cedega demo icon flashing). Though I was reluctant to buy in, I may chip in my cash for this product.
  2. Having trouble using it. Could only install it via root (they said you shouldn't) and counterstrike hanged then wouldn't boot. Well maybe something else will work.
  3. Its people like that which make me shake my head. He is correct that it is difficult to switch to linux. Might even cost more in some rare instances, but what this guy fails to understand is the limitations of XP Home. XP Home is worthless for a business if it uses a domain because XP Home doesn't use a domain, trust me I've tried it at my work place. The problem with linux still is that with many of its distros, there is a steep learning curve. Where I work, it'd be riotous to just switch to another OS. Thats why I prescribe the following: Wean the people off of windows. Instead of microsoft office, load in open office. Instead of IE, use Mozilla. People will learn with these tools a small curve and soon will be as good as they are with the microsoft items. Then when vitually all programs are linux originals, give them a linux distro. Teach them how to do the basics on it and stuff. With the programs out of the way, learning the few nuiances like where your stuff is stored is rather simple (since very few people do anything but word processing and email at my workplace). Help the people out with anything else they might want to do. The problem with microsoft's numbers is that they use the most favorable situation for them, and the least for Linux. Hardly unexpected, but a little dishonest. Yah its gonna cost for a few years, a person is stupid not to think that. But in the long run, think of the money you'd save on upgrades, programs, and IT maintanence.
  4. Your laptop sounds like mine (except I have 12gb hD) and I'm running fine with Mandrake 10 CE. The only prob is that some of the 3D games dont' work too well. Sigh, oh well.
  5. Just recently my scanner died and frankly I can't live without it. My old scanner was linux incompatable and I'm hoping with the next scanner I buy, I can get something that works in both Linux and Windows. Any suggestions to a)a cheap, good scanner compatible in windows and linux B)a site listing such scanners so I can browse through them myself.
  6. I prefer just regular mozilla for some reason. But I'm going to put a firefox/mozilla button on my website the next time I update.
  7. I finally said screw it, reinstalled the root partition, made an exact replica of my past home user, but the problem is that the old user (same name and pass as the new) isn't letting the new user access the files, therefore kde can't boot. Whats the best way to give permissions to the old user john, to the new user john.
  8. Is there anyplace I can go to find mods for the unreal tourny game of the year edition?
  9. The problem started when I added the fonts comic.ttf and comicbd.ttf to the fonts directory. It didn't go away when i removed them. I will try to restarting the font server when i get home from work (slow day)
  10. thats all I did. I deleted the two like you said but same problem. Exact same problem when i was finished. I also copied the files into the folder fonts:/ through kde but I can't seem to find where that is through command line.
  11. Ok I was doing something from this thread http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=19090 when I got this problem. When i boot into linux i get only as far as the command line login. Usually it goes straight into kde but the screen flickers then it goes to command line. When i tell it to boot into kde the screen flickers then it says several keys have been redefined, the font 'fixed' cannot be loaded and the server has crashed. I need this problem fixed. The computer is a Dell Latitude CPX (laptop) with mandrake 10.0 OE installed. Any help appreciated.

    Gimp Fonts

Well I did what you said. However the fonts didn't show up. So i decided to restart gimp(nothing), logout/login (nothing) then restart the computer. Now I have a new problem. I cannot boot into linux now. All i get is command line because KDE cannot open default font 'fixed'. So now I go off to another part of the forum to see if someone can help me fix my linux install.

    Gimp Fonts

too bad my laptop (the one with linux and the gimp i'm using in linux) doesn't have a windows gimp on it.

    Gimp Fonts

I use gimp 2 somehting (latest) in both linux and windows for purposes of my webcomic. However, the linux version of the gimp I have doesn't have all the fonts my windows version has. I only care about the Comic Sans font (thats the font i use for speech bubbles) and was wondering if someone could tell me how to add the Comic Sans font to linux gimp.
  15. Ok thank you guys for informing me. I may still do it. I love mandrake linux, but when I'm told I'm going to get something, (I wonder where it said I'd get commercial software with the club payment) I want to know what I'm getting so I don't feel cheated. If i know I'm not getting anything immediate out of it, then I'm fine with that.
  16. So basically there is no place I can go to see exactly what I get with spending my money. I'm not against donating to good and worthy causes. Problem is that my wallet isn't as generous as I am. I have donated to many freeware/open software like mozilla and spybot, but the fact is if I'm to spend $60 or $120 in one large chunk, I want to see what I get out of it. This is especially in light of the fact that Mandrake promises something but is very vague about what it is. I want to know whats on this 4th cd that I get to download if I join. Yah maybe it is selfish of me, but If i'm spending my money on something I want to know what I am getting before I get it.
  17. So these are all those downloads I supposedly get if I become a club member? Doesn't seem like much and from what I can see, doesn't look like I would get them without paying more (the club member discount on buying them). This isn't what I was expecting for the supposedly comerical software you get for being a club member.
  18. I've been condering joining Mandrake Club but there is one thing from keeping me from doing it. I've heard that there are alot of commercial programs which you can download if you are a club member. I'm interested in joining only if these commercial programs will be useful to me, but I can't find anyplace inwhich I can see what programs there are, what they do, etc. If someone could provide me a link to where I can look at (not download) the programs I would be most appreciative.
  19. The thing I don't get the most is why all these people are whining about not being able to play windows games in linux. Guess what guys, ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO!!!! What kills linux gaming is all the "linux gamers" who instead of supporting linux games go through hell to get a windows game to run even pathetically in linux. WineX is as good as you're going to get if you must play windows games in linux. Stop whining about it and instead think to the real problem. Instead of keeping on playing games made only to play in windows, try playing some of the linux games or ports only. That is what will keep linux gaming alive and growing, not trying to make an emulator work better (yah yah yah, wine is not an emulator). I've seen some very applications etc made for linux. Although I don't go into linux as much as I used to do because I can't leave my games, All of my non-game applications are linux orginated. Gaim, mozilla, open office etc etc. Try supporting games like unreal tournament. When unreal tournament started they made a downloadable installer for linux, now its included on every cd of their latest models. Thats progress. America's Army, a great FPS game has a linux port. Download and play that one. I'm sure someone keeps track of which port downloads how many times, let companines see that many people play the linux version rather than the windows version. Try searching the web for good linux games. Just recently I found something called Omega Strike or something, which is a space combat simulater. Great stuff. And someone remarked that many people need the crutch of windows applictions to transit. Frankly, most linux programs look and feel like windows applictions in at least one theme or setting. Evolution email is almost exactly like outlook express. Using that I was able to transisiton to understand email alot better. Now I use Mozilla. If you want transistionairy software, try supporting those linux applictions which look and feel like windows enough to transit. The pure linux experience can come later. If you want to help linux, stop about winex and people emulating windows programs. Support the linux applictions which are linux. Buy only games which are based in linux or have a linux port. If you are not willing to do this then you have no right to complain if linux gaming falls under or if we must depend on some third party software to play everything.

    Linux Games

    who's clawfang????
  21. I've never used this but you might like it: http://game-editor.com/ It has a free linux port and a paid windows port (take that windows). It works from what I can tell alot like gamemaker, but it has advantages (so many easy ports you can make) and disadvantages (doesn't have as much power to control) to it.
  22. Alright. About two weeks ago I installed America's Army for linux. Everything went smoothly until I actually started using it. The menu screen was choppy and barely readable, but thats something I can learn to live with. But my main problem was that when I started playing the actual game, the video went all funky, blending every pixel, blurriness to the nth power. I then thinking that I needed new drivers downloaded and installed the new ATI linux drivers. This totally wrecked my linux install. Nothing worked. The video was gangked and I had to make a fresh install (not that big of a deal since I didn't have anything important on that machine). I havn't gone back quite yet to fool with America's army because I want some help. Why was my video screwed up? I use an ATI 9200 or 9100 (I can't remember) and games like unreal worked better than in window. Did I miss something with the install or some obscure video setting? I've played America's Army in windows and I'm interested in playing the game, but I want one game that I play in linux over winblows.
  23. I don't know what this guy is talking about (in regards to windows being more stable then linux). I have two examples for this. 1)Using the same laptop, with linux it took 2 hours to install and configure, upgrade everything. From there I was able to im, use office, and web browse without trouble. Then I needed to put windows 98 on it (2000, and xp wouldn't install on it). It took over 2 days just to get the dumb thing to boot up properly. I had to download over 30 drivers to make the video and sound to work properly. It took another 2 hours to install the instant messager of my choice, browser, office etc. Then after 2 days of constant running it starts bugging at me. With linux I had over 3 weeks non stop before I had to reboot and thats because I was fooling around with something. With windows, programs just crash for no apparant reason, I get errors up the wazoo and I wouldn't doubt there being a virus or two on it by now even with virus scan. Tell me gents, which of the two would you choose? 2)At work I run around day in day out working with windows machines (XP or server 2000). I have contant problems which keep my job very busy. If some file didn't get corrupted, or the server for some stupid reason erased a user, I have to fix a computer which despite admin rights only install, got a ton of spyware installed on it. The only computer I can honestly say I have rarely any trouble with is the website/email server which is run by Redhat 9. Egads. I'll take the extra 5 minutes install. Evolution has never failed me (although I use mozilla mail now). Yah konquer isn't the best, it never was meant to be the best. But at my job site, linux would work so much better. I wouldn't have half the problems I do now if it wasn't for the fact that Windows is on most computers. Tell me gents, which version of this statement do you believe: a)Windows saves you money over linux. b)Linux saves you money over Winblows.
  24. Did and while their selection is good, only one of those games I have let alone play at all.
  25. I've seen a few sites dedicated to porting windows games to linux and I have a problem with this for some reason. I have many windows games which i would love to run in linux, but i've already paid hundreds of dollars buying these games. For the linux port most of them seem to a new cd which they ship out to you where they charge you again. I know for unreal tournament there was an online linux installer that took care of everything, is it practical to do the same for other windows games? I'm not against paying money for games (i've spent alot already) but i think it would be much better to the customer to provide an installer online so they could use the cds they already bought and perhaps to provide this installer in future releases of the game. Whats the take on this?
