Thanks arctic. I'll give this a go. I've taken out batteries from mobos before - in fact I'm almost sure there was a battey change before the flash upgrade - eck if its gone already, that didn't last long.

The box was running only MDK10. No other OS installed, and no winblows for over a year.

The psu powers up , but nothing else happens. I have a couple of old spare boxes, I'll see if any of the psu are compatible.

I tried to re set the bios by altering the jumper, but it didn't work at all.

I'll try out these suggestions, and hope that I don't need to buy a new board - cuz I've been wanting a new one for myself for a while before this happened :P

My partner's PC has just this morning, it seems, crashed and died. It doesn't boot up at all.

I've re set the mobo jumpers - still nothing.

Last year the board 's (a Soyo 7IWMLV10) bios was flashed without any problems. This was about 15+ months ago and its been used regularly (on an almost daily basis) without any problems.

Today, nothing, no beep codes, no nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I might try? Is it usual if a mobo packs in not to give any kind of warning?

When it asks for a username, type root

When it asks for a pswd, type-in the root password.

Also, you may want to ensure that supermount is selected withhin the MCC/mount points/cr-rom/options.

oh... ubuntu and floppy disks... you don't need to reformat them if they are dos-disks. just edit the fstab entry for your floppy from fileformat "auto" to "vfat" and it should work like a charm. ;)

I like the look of Mepis – and he could also get hold of the point and click book which would be useful. Needs a stash of RAM though.

Ubuntu, I was initially thinking of installing this as I have a couple of discs just waiting to be installed asomewhere. Also, you don't need huge amounts of memory resources. I agree that once its installed its easy enugh to use. Only one small reservation I have when I tried it out myself recently – it was a pain when recognising floppy discs (yes, some of us still use em!) I always needed to re format the disc if it hadn't been used in the ubuntu box before – not good if you have work saved to disc in the first place. In fact it was bloody frustrating. Doesn't need huge chunks of RAM which is good.

I like very much the look of beatrix – a stripped down ubuntu – great for an old machine, and just carrying the basics.

Lycoris – looks like it has some good features, has a reasonably good web site, and I like the fact it has what to me looks like easy to use software installer downloads. Not too bad RAM wise.

Xandros/Linspire – again looks good for n00bs. mid to heavier on the RAM side of things. Subscriptions though I'm not too sure about. But if he was running winblows, he'd still forkmout for running legit software/security. So maybe this will be OK.

I'll drag him over – he can check out the sites, look at his bank balance, and check out the ubuntu live disc.

Should be an interesting experience for him though. And I'll remember the tip about winmodems - cheers.

My partner's bro-in-law is not conversant AT ALL with a PC. Now he wants one. He wants to surf, email, learn office stuff. Just the basics. He got a brick of a PC and wanted me to install win98 - but 2 separate discs later and nothing will install. I tried installing ubuntu but that won't go either. Its going to the IT recyclers (that's where I work :)).

Anyway, I've got hold of another goldie oldie PC. I'm thinking that as the guy has no real prior experience of software, that maybe instead of Win98 blah de blah, that I install a really user friendly linux that looks like windaz. Need some real point and click stuff. So, I've narrowed it down to the following:

Linspire, Xandros Lycoris.

In that order. It needs to be able to be take the 'testing' of a *complete* newbie, yet offer enough room so he can actually haev fun and enjoy. He won't know the difference between Win/Lin'

Anybody got any thoughts on these 3, or any other OS suggestions to look for.

My only real concern is that I believe Linspire is so much like windaz it even bad security built in as standard - anyone tried it, liked it, not liked it?

If its the Linux Format book/DVD read on. This is taken from the book itself (though you'll need to access the DVD via Windows):

You can create a boot disk in Windows. Put a blank or unwanted floppy disk in the drive, go to the dosutils directory of the coverdisc, double-click rawwritewin and select the correct image file form the dialog.

Seems to be definately related to Gnome. Started in Gnome this morning, and another keyring was found /tmp. I don't really need Gnome, so unistalled Gnome the components.

I think it will also depend on your mobo/bios system.

For example, not so many moons ago I bought two new Philps CDRW's (PCRW5232).

Installed them into 2 different boxes - 1 works and one doesn't - and they have both run the same OS (mdk10 and later 10.1); swapped the units around to make sure it wasn't a faulty cdrw and it ended with eaxctly the same result: My partners linuxbox detects the new cdrw's ok - her mobo had a flash upgrade lat year (before that it wouldn't even install 9.2). Mine, well I'm running a PIII board in which the bios 'apparently' can't be upgraded - so I can't get the new kit to work. The mobo I think is about 6 - 7 yrs old. Time for a new one soon I think.

If its fairly new mobo or bios upgradeable, you shouldn't have too many worries - if its older, beware.

Just been browsing /home/tmp and noticed 2 keyrings which look like: keyring-<6string numbers/letters> both have different strings.

What are these keyrings? I don't recall downloading anything encrypted or anything which migt be regarded as so in even the remotest of senses.

I believe that these other dirs in/home/user/tmp> mc-chris & orbit-chris are something to do with Gnome? Is it possible these keyrings are too?

I've googled, looked mdk docs, here at MUB and LQ, Twiki - can't find anything (other then related to gpg keys which don't think these are?)

I'm using KDE desktop, mdk10.1 and I have recently installed the Gnome desktop to try out.

Little of the mark here but if anyone knows how or if i can install Kontact on a mac id be eternally greatful

Well, Yellow Dog Linux is KDE based and designed for Macs - I assume it comes pre installed with Kontact?

I know its not a 4 port, but I recently bought a Linksys 'Integrated KVM 2-port switch' and it works absolutely dandy with my wheelmouse. Got it from Amazon pretty cheap - plug it in and away you go. I have it working across mdk10.1/ubuntu/

( and just very temporarily on a WinME box too :woops: :lol: )

K3B has severe problems with kernel 2.6.8, and minor ones with 2.6.9.

All I can suggest is getting a newer 2.6.10 or 2.6.11 .src.rpm from 10.2/2005LE or Cooker, and make a fitting kernel for your system with "rpm --rebuild kernel-blah.src.rpm". It will take some time and CPU cycles.

Thanks for this scarecrow - If its a kernel issue, I'm plannning on upgrading to the new 10.2/2005EL so maybe I shall just wait till then - its something I can get dirty with during the forthcoming spring holidays :)

As for permissions, the document is made with cells where text can be inserted, but the document as a whole, still cannot be edited.  Also, it goes without saying that it requires a fully licensed copy of Adobe Acrobat to make one, Acrobat reader will not due.  Last, when authoring one with the latest version of acrobat, you can give permission in the file for the end user to save a filled copy, or you can prohibit that.  For some reason, the federal taxe forms can be saved once filled, but when I file my state income taxes, I have to print-to-pdf to save a copy.  Fortunately that's no big deal with linux.

VeeDubb, thanks for the examples =-not located the irs one, tried to download the casino jobby but its taking forever-and-a-day at the mo - and i'm on Broadband.

However, what you say above really answers my Q in that the author has to create the form to allow the user to add text; ordinarily (certainly that I've come across) this is not usually the case. Like I say, I've been having some limited success to add text to a PDF doc using Scribus, but at the moment I can't seem to be able to move move beyond the first page - this is on a form which doesn't allow form filling. Guess its still a cse of printing and form filling by hand for now.

An important difference between this and programs like kpdf, is that the real reader supports fillable forms, and kpdf doesn't.  Fillable forms are frequently used for things like job applications and tax forms.  it's a small feature, but a veryt usefull one. 

 

Also, witht he fillable forms, the real acrobat reader will allow you to save a copy of the form with your info filled in without using the dodgy print to pdf function.

Fillable forms: how does this work then? Is fillable forms a PDF prog under the ownership of the pdf author? I assume you would need permissions to edit?

I'm intersted in this - I've been trying to use scribus for exactly this purpose, but I can only get access/edit the first page of a multi page doc.

I'm still unable to burn a CD using KIIIB.

I'm still mostly getting an OPC error suggesting my reader doesn't like the media - though I've tried 2 lots now

I've cleaned the lens; uninstalled/reinstalled KIIIB; and then uninstalled and reinstalled via urpmi.

I know the media is OK cos it works just fine with KIIIB on my partners linuxbox.

The error suggests its a hardware thing but my combi has been able to burn using KIIIB and these media before (with 9.2 and I think 10). Other than not writing (which I hope is a temporary glitch), it still reads and plays music.

I've googled looked around here and LQ but still I'm non the wiser.

Has anyone here gone thru this and overcome?

I bought my 4 CDs from a budget linux online store.

When installing 10.1 it recognises my sources CDs - suggesting CD4 was KDE 3.3 -

However, the installation only actually installed KDE 3.2.

So, unless 'I'm' missing the point on something???

As I thought, we had done a HDD install using Feather.

To do so, load up your Live CD, right click the desktop/Enhancements & Extras/Install to hdd.

I'm not able to back any data to CDRW's using K3B.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled; I've cleaned the the lens of my writer; K3B recognises my model (Its a Samsung combi 304B (CDRW/DVD-R))as a reader/writer. I've not had a problem before with mdk9.2/10 I'm currently running 10.1

After selecting the data to backup, and selecting burn (and I've tried a combination of speed/multisessions etc) I'm getting this error warning:

mkisofs did not exit cleanly

OPC failed. Probably the writer does not like the medium.

Sometimes I just get 'OPC failed. Probably the writer does not like the medium'

I've not used these discs with this writer before (Packard Bell CDRWs) - why would my reader/writer not like them?

I've just tested the media using my partners machine (different burner) I am able to backup data - though there was an initial error (254?) I was able to back up data.

So, before i go out to the shops - is there anything else i can try, or is it really just a case of hit and miss with my purchases?
