  1. Thanks axel_2078 - I now have an icon on the desktop. In this respect, all is working well - thanks. However, I still can't get Thunderbird to fire up from the Applications menu; I have an icon alongside KMail. Clicking on Thunderbird icon, as set up in MenuDrake. Anyideas anyone?
  2. Thanks for the advice to arctic and axel 2078. However, still not getting anywhere. Thunderbird icon on the desktop. This is a shortcut from the directory where I have downloaded and unzipped, as in dmkh's earlier email. The file which is titled Thunderbird is a shell script. When you double click it loads Thunderbird. It is this icon which i have placed a shortcut to on the desktop and allows me access to the client. If I right click/properties on the desktop icon, I can see the icon on the left, but clicking on it does not allow it to be changed. Is this because its a shell script I wonder? I would like Thunderbird to be the default client (Start Applications/config/KDE/Components/Components chooser/Email Client/Use a diiferent email client then browse to select.) However, following the instructions by arctic I'm going wrong somewhere. I can get an icon to the applications menu, but it will not load Thunderbird. This is what I did From MenuDrake (root menu) scroll down to Networking/Mail on left hand side. With Mail icon highlighted and opened, I clicked on 'add applications' from toolbar, in Title, I enter Thunderbird and in Comamnd I write '/home/blah/Thunderbird/thunderbird install/thunderbird' (without apostrophe's) and save. Whereby 'thunderbird' in the 'thunderbird install' directory is the shell script to load the programme. This has now brought an icon to the applications menu. However, when I click on it nothing happens. Any ideas?
  3. I've downloaded and installed Thunderbird. From the directory, I've created a shortcut to the desktop so that I'm able to launch Thunderbird quickly. I've tried to install it in my menu, but it didn't work, but I can go back to that sometime later. In the meantime, I'd like to be able to change the desktop icon, but there doesn't seem to the option available - anyone know if this is possible? I'm using mdk9.2
  4. . Doh! apologies fro any confusion, where I write ppoe I actually meant eth0.
  5. Have just managed to share an internet connection with 3 MDK9.2s and a M$ ME. Using a router-come modem-come firewall. something is niggling me. On 1 of the MDK boxes, even when sitched OFF, the router lights show it is still connected. No matter where I connect it to on the router, its always the same. Ive looked through the router manual and can't find anything in troubvleshooting etc. Any ideas?
  6. I was having a problem connecting my router. Within configure internet conenction I confgured for LAN (not adsl). In network sharing, it asks for which device is connected to internet, and automatically suggests pppoe. Following default, and clicking the 'next' button to move on with the process, the damn wizard then told me no devices were installed - even though it was recognised in MCC/Hardware. I would reconfig anyway, and the same problem just kept on occuring. I was in this constant loop. Anyway, I overcome this by realising that maybe I should enter PPP+ (the adsl modem router directly conencts to the net ) so, in network sharing, where it suggests pppoe, I simply replaced by ppp+. Clicking 'next' to go to the next screen, told me I had to use pppoe! and asked if it should auto config - my respnse was yes, of course, and I just followed the rest of the auto defaults and hey presto I was connected. (also, remember to configure your LAN in the wizard, and activate. I needed DCHP and it kept dropping to static). I share internet connection with 3 MDK 9.2 and 1 dirty M$ ME (have you used the windows wizard to share connection - I did and it connected straight away). Maybe you need to config the modem?
  7. Hi Knight40 don't despair, hang in there. I'm a newbie, and for months I couldn't get access to the net, I was facing similar dilemas - couldn't get my USB modem working, lots of advice on BBs were very techie and at times it was very bewildering. Some great support, but easy to get lost within the confusion. I have only just managed to get connected - I abandoned the USB modem and driver installations, saved some cash and got an ethernet modem router - thats the solution, get ethernet. You can great modem router quite cheap now. The best thing is NO DRIVERS to concern yourself with, and it takes just minutes to connect - I can now start thinking about approaching all the other stuff such as compiling, kernel updating, software installation etc etc at a pace that suits me. I've gone to a couple of those cheap bookshops which always sell old print copies of books and picked up a bargain for a couple of pounds - a teach yourself Linux in 24 hours - it covers the basics. And therr's plenty in to get going with. Try the Mandrake Twiki: http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/WebIndex Click on: ABeginnersStartWithMandrakeLinux and it lists a whole spectrum of web sites aimed at the beginner. Sorry I can't help with your question, I'm at the same stage. But I've got Mdk installed across 3 PCs at home, and can only look forward. Hang in there, and from one beginner to another, if you can, ditch that modem! Best.
  8. I.E.6 and Outlook ... just kiddin. Before I was able to install MDK, I was using Firefox in M$. Now I'm on MDK9.2 I'm using Konqueror - but still prefer Firefox. Trying to work it out how to install (just a newbie here, and have just overcome some installation hurdles). Thunderbird looks promising, but also attracted to Evolution.
  9. If you dual boot with M$ Windoze, then the modem might be able to use the file from there - I had some relative success - after months of failing to get the thing to work with MDK9.2 - but for some reason it ran very slow and knocked out my firewall. I'm only a newbie so this may have been able to be resolved somehow. I have overcome my connection issues by investing in all singing all dancing modem/router/firewall - and am now able to share a connection across a mdk/M$ home network (the M$ days are numbered). An ethernet connection is what you really need - no driver issues here, and with web based configuration for your connection your away in minutes. However it certainly appears that the advise offered in the link from spiedra might work, some good feedback there. Lets hope so, as the Speedtouch is a 'popular' modem. However, I and many others have had the misfortune of spending months trying to get the beast to work - you'll find many tales of woe in this and other bulletin boards. Good luck.
  10. If any one has this problem - I believe its a bug in 9.2 - then the way to overcome this issue and install updates is as spiedra suggests, but a little more. I tried update-menus -v in Konsole, but it didn't work. The way to overcome this is to reboot into a text screen (similar to a konsole) - at the Lilo prompt, hit the 'Escape' key. If your default is 'linux' then type 'linux 3'. Log in with your username and password, then [su] to root. type 'update-menus -v' and a screen of script will appear. When the cursosr rests, hit the 'Enter' key. You should now be logged in as user, again type 'update-menus -v' . When the cursor rests, hit the 'Enter' key once again, and type 'startx' You'll be taken to your desktop and hopefully your missing icons and programmes will reappear, and you should also have your updates installed. look in /var/cache/urpmi/rpms for uninstalled downloads.
  11. After months of hair ripping, I abandoned the speedtouch330 and opted for an all in one router/modem/firewall. MDK9.2 is now quite happily installed on our home Pcs (except this one with M$ ME which days are numbered). Anyway, joy joy, at last I can access the internet using Mandrake - such a joy, problems with just 1 for months, and now I've got three all accessing the net at the same time :D After install and connections were made all round I tried to update, and on the 2 boxes I tried, get the exact same problem. I needed to update security patches from the MCC and downloaded all of them to be on the safe side. On reboot - my desktop icons had been replaced with little blue folders. My programme icons too had been replaced, worse still, most of the programmes had been deleted/removed/lost. This happened on 2 boxes. Any ideas? I've reinstalled on them both, so now I have a home network which is running and is great, but lacks all security updates.

    cdrom problems

Hey all in addition to my last post, this information may be useful. When replacing the new CDRW with the old CDRom, part way through boot up, a screen appeard which confirmed a change in hardware. I then had the option to run a config tool. Accepting the option, another screen appeared, which gave mount details. Pressing OK then took me into the rest of the boot up process. No more problemsd with the old CDRom. When replacing the Old CDRom with the new CDRW, again a confirmation of hardware screen appears and again with the sam option to config. Accepting the option this time though, omits the second screen and just goes straight into boot up process. Any thoughts? Chris.

    cdrom problems

I replaced the sparkling new CDRW with an old CD Rom - and it works perfectly fine. The new CDRW that I'm having problems with, was then installed into another machine, and it works just dandy. So, I can assume then that the cable in my box is OK; and also the new CDRW works OK too. There is a desktop icon recognising the new CDRW, but when I look in MCC its not listed under hardrake, nor the mount points option. If I open the icon, the CDRW simply does not read the discs. Any ideas anyone? A baffled newbie. (after months of stress using a Speedtouch 330 and not being able to connect to the intenet, I have today managed to network 4 home PCs, using an ethernet router/modem/firewall - Hoorah. This means I can now give M$ the boot).

    cdrom problems

Hi Hope somebody is out there to help a newbie with this hardware issue. I am just building a home network, installing MDK9.2 - and it gracefully chewed up 3 LG CD Roms. I have replaced 1 with an old CR R - which is working fine. Second machine, have bought a new Philips PCRW5232 - this is working fine. On the third machine, I initially bought a Benq CDRW - the CD ROm icon was on the desktop, but it wouldn't read any discs. I doublechecked all the wiring, but still it wouldn't read. So, I replaced this with another new Philips PCRW5232 - and I still have the same problem. Going into the MCC does not resolve this either, my CD Rom is not listed within hardrake. As all 3 PCs have been installed using the same set of MDK9.2 discs, and considering the exact same model works in another machine, I presume this must be a hardware config issue, but have no idea why it works in 1 box and not the other. Sorry if this comes over as dumb, but any assistance will be gratefully accepted. Cheers. Chris.
  15. Thanks streeter, I'll use your howto on my next attempt. I have another question - everything appears to be working just fine - the lights on the modem show an adsl connection and the appropriate connection to computers; ethernet cards are lit up; and between them they are all blinking away. Though I haven't established a connection that allows me to 'view' web pages, clearly there is activity. Until I am able to get a web page on line - could there be a security vulnerabilty - because I've not configured the connection, I'm unable to view/access the in built firewall (I disable the MDK firewall beforehand). chris.
  16. Hey all This is my first posting using MDK 9.2 after finally getting a decent connection, since dumping the Speedtouch 330 - I got myself an ethernet modem come router come firewall. T'riffic. Thats not to say that the connection was 'easy' and it took me a good couple hours to get there. However, I've now been at this next problem for a day now and I'm beat. I need to connect another 2 Pcs (I've installed the 9.2 on them already) to the router (netgear DG834); they have ethernet cards in place. For hours I've been trying to share the connection on just one of them. First of all by going into MCC/DrakConnect to configure and then DrakGw to enable DCHP. I'm told that everything configures Ok and that I'm ready to share the connection, but I can't get anything (I do notice though that the whenni DrakConnect, the lan setting drop from DCHP to static). The lights on the card are blinking away like a christmas tree, the connection is lit up on the router, but I can't get this second PC to connect. I've tried it with and without shorewall too. I also have the router set as a DHCP server. It works great on one PC, but try as I have, I can't get anything up and running on th second. Any ideas out there? Much appreciated.
  17. spinynorman, many thanks for this advise. It's taken an age using this modem, but with the support from people such as yourself; as a newbie I do feel that slowly but surely I'm getting there. I'll try out your suggestions and feedback. Cheers.
  18. Ah ha thanks Pzatch and iphitus for confirming this - I feel better now! I ended up in this thread following on from a linkl within in a Harware forum thread - I'm actually using the terrible speedtouch 33O (as oppossed to 550) which doesn't have a port for an ethernet cable I will overcome the 330 - thanks to an earlier reply from iphitus, I have at least managed to make a connection in mdk10CE (though it runs very slow) and Shorewall does not work I'm considering either getting a modem-router to dump the speedtouch or using an old box and installing the Smootwall firewall - using the speedtouch. If I go for the latter option, does anyone know if i'll face similar mountains to climb? I'm gonna do some research so if needed, I'll start a new thread in a few days or so. Cheers again.
  19. OK here's is probably a real dumb question, but here goes... Very Easy. Connect modem with LAN cable -- its better and easier than USB Configure connection as a LAN connection in MCC. How do I connect a USB with LAN cable The Speedtouch has a fixed usb cable. Sorry if this is a real dumbass question
  20. Aussiejohn where is it man - where's the How To? Really pleased that you got the Speedtouch licked. I've 'kinda' got a connection, but its real slow and wipes out the firewall so I now darenot conenct! Please let me have the how to so I can start all again!!
  21. vdemuth THANKYOU! at long long last, I have managed to connect to the internet, using Mandrake with the Speedtouch 330. However, I then found it doesn't support Shorewall Still, 1 major hurdle has been cleared - onwards and forwards
  22. vdemuth, yes you're right, I'm using KDE. Thanks for your reply, I'm gonna try this out, I didn't know about super user. iphitus - I so want to give the USB up man. You say ditch the uSB and use the network cable with the modem - are you saying use network cable with the speedtouch? If so, how - network cable conenction is a bigga fitting and won't fit the socket on the modem. Or do you mean give up the uSB and install another modem? Sorry if this sounds stupid :woops:
  23. I bought an official boxed mdk9.2 - the 'product key' was on a slip of paper within the box (an A4 folded in half - looked like a photocopy sheet) - I've since 'misplaced' it and now don't know the number. Your right though, I've emailed Mandrake several times and NEVER receievd a reply. I've email the web administrator and NEVER had a reply. I've tried to use Mandrake Expert and NEVER had a reply. It seems that I can't get in topuch with Mandrake unless I'm parting with some cash. I've had emails from Mandrake Club kindly reminding me that my trial subscription was coming to an end - but on the grounds that I bought a version (before even trialing the software) thinking this would help support Linux in some little way - and at the same time I'd receive some level of support - just the kinda thing a complete newbie might need? I don't neccessarily expect my problems to be resolved, however, I've never even received any kind of an acknowledgment, which I think is pretty poor, so I have up to now refused to join club. Don't get me wrong - though as a newbie I'm having some problems, I can see the potential and am just biding my time. But I don't want to part with any more cash if I'm not getting the bare minimum of support which was promised.
  24. Hi all PC no1 - Win ME dual boots with MDK10CE (I've got an official 9.2 still to go when this is resolved) PC no2 - MDK10CE Trying to connect to internet with speedtouch 330 (yes, all these weeks and I'm STILL trying) From the dual boot windows partition, I've copied the file alcaudlsl.sys to a floppy and renamed it mgmt.o In an effort to get PC no2 connected, I need to install the mgmt.o file into the Speedtouch directory. Using the GUI I open a window with the mgmt.o file I open a second window using the pathway /usr/share/speedtouch I try to 'copy' or 'move' the mgmt.o file into speedtouch directory, but I get the following prompt "Access denied could not write to /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o" I presume this is because I attempted this as a user but not as root. can anybody advise how I can install this as root - I'm still new, had tons of problems trying to get this modem installed and I'm unfortunately not up to speed with comamnd lines yet. I'm hoping to network three linux machines at home, using a standalone with Shorewall, but I'll still face the exact same problems (alternative is to buy a modem/router) so any kind words will VERY GRATEFULLY be accepted. Still in hope... Cheers.
