  1. It's not that the install itself is more secure, it's just that if you upgrade through the network and then in the middle of the procedure your network hangs up accidentally, you may encounter some problems. So it really depends on how much your connection is reliable.

    I upgraded before through the CD's (equivalent to DVD, only different media) and in general it worked very well. Maybe there were minor tweakings had to be done after the upgrade, but nothing serious or difficult. So I recommend using the DVD option (which I'm downloading right now), but it's a matter of personal perference (as you can see from the various answers posted here).

    Do I have to know commands or something to upgrade with DVD?.......more info? or I just have to follow its instructions?

  2. I've been doing a little reasearch and I found this command line upgrade option

    I don't know if this is the way it's done, cuz since I use mandriva I prefered a clean installation...now I want to try the upgrade!

    are these procedures correct?

    Upgrading 2009.0 to 2009.1

    if there's something more please let me know...I want to know more before I make a mistake...I'm also downloading the mandriva free DVD 2009.1 ...so if the DVD install is more secure than the command line option please let me know if there's a how-to or something ....there's a problem if I used KDE3, KDE4 and Gnome?

    thx in advance

  3. I've upgraded both my laptops and got exactly the same error message at the end of the process. However the upgrade appears to have been successfull (you can verify by checking the release version do: cat /etc/release). Good work apart from the hiccup at the end :)

    I would like to know what do you do to upgrade....and if there's another way to upgrade...maybe using the free 2009.1 DVD? saftely without having problems...cuz I've always reinstalled it ..now I want to upgrade it XD

    :thumbs: finally available mandriva :D

  4. All you need to do is remove the .wine and .wine-doors folders/directories. Then there is no config. As I mentioned, it's best to get the .wine folder set up first running winecfg before you use wine-doors. I had lots of problems with 0.12, but 0.13 works well for me.

    what happens if I use

    urpme wine wine-doors

    and then I delete .wine and .wine-doors folders and reinstall it using urpmi? I do that when I want to start from scratch but I don't know if it makes troubles or not....I do that because when I used to delete .wine and .wine-doors directories and run the applications it begins to search for .wine and .wine-doors...so I thought it would be better unstalling first...

    does it makes trouble? :unsure:

  5. I do not know what it has to do with security, a simple error to correct. Only I do not know whether Konqueror error or the page.

    I'm not saying it has security issues...I'm asking you...does it offers the same or better security features than firefox....

    that's I'm trying to ask you cuz I've test it navigating and it is faster than firefox...I'm just trying to compare them a little bit more...cuz I don't know how to test those security things :P

    sorry 4 replying too late :mellow:

  6. mplayer + win32codecs is the surest shot. Of course you can use any mplayer frontend, like Smplayer or Gnome-Mplayer (both being might good).

    As said above, you will need mplayer from PLF (not the official repos) and the full win32codecs pack preferrably from the mplayer site.

    yeah that's right I'm using mplayer and win32...and works...he could also try using VLC player.. :P :D

  7. If I enable Java in Konqueror, but this forum will refresh loop. The same problem repeats itself at the opening of the next bookmark. This is not JAVA problem.

    I Konqueror impressive speed. Only those few problems ...Lex

    and it is secure? does it has any security issue?...I've used it but I don't know how to test those things :P

  8. I am running Mandriva 2008.1 with an older AGP 4X nvidia card and compiz 0.7.6. I frequently but not consistently see windows decoration problems like the one shown. The nvidia driver 169.12 is installed. Can anyone offer any suggestions to fix this?

    why don't you read this compiz wiki...there are some commands used when you want to change your decorator..hope this help ;)

  9. So I'm trying to figure out how to get the most out of my laptop battery. So far I can get just over 4 hours, but I'm looking to see just how high I can go on my cheap, low-capacity battery. The thing I'm having trouble with is managing the CPU. Currently, I use KPowerSave, which I believe uses cpufrequtils to set the "P States". But the problem is, my only choices are 'Performance', 'Dynamic' and 'Powersave'. On Vista (ugh, I know) I believe (haven't used it in a loong time, for obvious reasons) I can set exactly what frequency to set them at, and even shut down one core entirely if I want. Is there any way to do such a thing in Linux? Because the best I can get so far is both cores running at 800MHz, which is good, but there are times when all I'm running is IceWM and CoolEdit, so I could surely survive on much less. Any suggestions?

    well I did some reaserch (I know it doesn't seem that way ;) but I usually do that when urpmi code doesn't work cuz I don't know the program or daemon name) if you're using mandriva free 2009.0 you will find in rpmdrake a daemon and a program that could work for you (seriously I haven't try it cuz I don't need less than 800 MHz)....so hopefully it will work for you :) see my screenshot and if you haven't add easy-urpmi reposit..do it first :)

  10. Mandriva on a dual core runs like a dream. I have a Dual Core Clevo (badged evesham) with 1.5Gb of ram running 2009 with KDE4-4.2.0, Compiz turned on, Emerald too and I can't fault the performance so far.

    So do I ...1,5Gb ram, 1,73GHz Intel Pentium Dual core, running 2009. too and using KDE 4 and Gnome, compiz and works perfectly fine....mine is an inspiron 640m, 256Mb video intel 945GM and I think (and feels that way) linux works better with my notebook than windows

  11. 7. When I turn on 3D mode effects, choose Compiz-fusion but when restart all of my apps lose the title bar....what happened?

    what do you mean with "choose Compiz-fusion but when restart all of my apps"?

    if u're losing the compiz-window-decorator....you can restart it typing in the terminal

    compiz-window-decorator --replace

    it used to happen many times while I was using KDE4.... I don't know if it'll work 4 u...

    if you want to get more plugins and info about compiz I suggest u to take a look at this page http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/ ..........it helped me

    tell me if it didn't worked and I'll try to help u....

    If you want to know more about grub....I'm reading its manual....what scarecrow said it's right but just to make sure

    http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html

    its helping me rebuild my damaged grub (by myself :( ) hope this help u and others too...

  12. Thanks a lot everybody, you are very kind for helping me and I really appreciate it.

    I couldn't fix any of my problems but thank you anyway.

    Wow you got a lot problems ..dude are you there? download this manual with opera or firefox (which 1 u like) this is what gave me a lot of info (some of them does not work anymore but taught me how to be a linux user

    download it and read it....if you wanna know about programs you have to download the tar.gz or .tar.bz2 files if you want to compile it (u will see it in the manual give it a try) maybe it will open your eyes a little bit more....

  13. I downloaded the source in that page....thx a lot 4 the manual.....and the binary works fine!.....I used to run firefox 2 binary :) and don't worry my cell is a survivor :D...you're right about my pc somethings wrong with my notebook it doesn't want to compile it...............thx a lot

  14. It appears that you have two versions of QT installed. So in a terminal (as user), cd to the moto4lin-0.3 directory, then do exactly as I have done here (one line at a time)
    PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/qt3/bin
    export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3
    /usr/lib/qt3/bin/qmake
    make

    then you will find your new moto4lin binary in the /moto4lin-0.3/moto_ui directory.

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/qt3/bin

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ /usr/lib/qt3/bin/qmake

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ make

    cd moto_ui && make -f Makefile

    make[1]: Entering directory `/home/roger/Sources/moto4lin-0.3/moto_ui'

    /usr/lib/qt4/bin/uic form1_base.ui -o ui/ui_form1_base.h

    uic: File generated with too old version of Qt Designer

    File 'form1_base.ui' is not valid

    make[1]: *** [ui/ui_form1_base.h] Error 1

    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/roger/Sources/moto4lin-0.3/moto_ui'

    make: *** [sub-moto_ui] Error 2

    what did you do? and there's something wrong with the source or something???

  15. theYinYeti is correct. When you ran qmake as root you created makefiles with root perms. I would suggest that you delete the current moto4lin-0.3 directory and extract the moto4lin-0.3.tar.bz2 again. Make sure you have qmake installed. Then cd the new moto4lin-0.3 directory and run qmake and make again

    I did as you told me....but I got the same results

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ qmake --version

    QMake version 2.01a

    Using Qt version 4.4.3 in /usr/lib

    after verifying the qmake version and try again to make the program....

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ qmake

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ make

    cd moto_ui/ && make -f Makefile

    make[1]: Entering directory `/home/roger/Sources/moto4lin-0.3/moto_ui'

    /usr/lib/qt4/bin/uic form1_base.ui -o ui/ui_form1_base.h

    uic: File generated with too old version of Qt Designer

    File 'form1_base.ui' is not valid

    make[1]: *** [ui/ui_form1_base.h] Error 1

    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/roger/Sources/moto4lin-0.3/moto_ui'

    make: *** [sub-moto_ui-make_default] Error 2

    should I change qmake permission or something like that? or there's something else I should know?

  16. You need to install libusb-devel, libqt3-devel, gcc and gcc-c++ from the repos. Also, you should not compile source code as root.

    thx Greg2

    [root@localhost roger]# urpmi libusb-devel

    http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.0.i586.list: media/main/release/libusb-devel-0.1.12-12mdv2009.0.i586.rpm

    installing libusb-devel-0.1.12-12mdv2009.0.i586.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms

    Preparing... ################################

    1/1: libusb-devel ################################

    [root@localhost roger]# urpmi libqt3-devel

    Package libqt3-devel-3.3.8b-8mdv2009.0.i586 is already installed

    [root@localhost roger]# urpmi gcc

    Package gcc-4.3.2-3mnb2.i586 is already installed

    [root@localhost roger]# urpmi gcc-c++

    Package gcc-c++-4.3.2-3mnb2.i586 is already installed

    but when I followed your advice (Also, you should not compile source code as root) I got this.

    [roger@localhost Sources]$ cd moto4lin-0.3 && ls

    Changelog INSTALL moto4lin.kdevelop README

    CVS/ Makefile moto4lin.pro templates/

    GPL-2 moto4lin@ moto_ui/

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$ qmake

    Failure to open file: /home/roger/Sources/moto4lin-0.3/Makefile

    Unable to generate makefile for: /home/roger/Sources/moto4lin-0.3/moto4lin.pro

    [roger@localhost moto4lin-0.3]$

    there's a failure opening th Makefile...what can I do now? Do I need something else?

    thx in advance
