  1. I think the question is more "what" to install, not "how" to install.

    You could have a look at the wiki for suggestions, or just browse the "Add software" gui for a category that interests you.

    You don't say whether this is your first time checking out what linux software is available or not, but I was amazed the first time I saw just how much was available!

    There's no single answer to "what should I install" though, it depends too much on what you want to do with your new system. Play videos, write documents, develop software, run a server, perform complex maths, tinkle around on the internet, .... and so on.

    well I thought about that but I was thinking about the java thing and that it might help more info... :unsure:

  2. alright well i just got a fresh install of mandriva one 2009 and things are going reasonably well after configs and some tweaks. so i wanted to begin importing some data from backups and lo and behold, but no mounting is happening. im new to the forum so excuse my inability to put the entry in a code box, but heres what my fstab is looking like.

    # Entry for /dev/sda1 :

    UUID=d6645d4b-8b0d-4a53-a104-a55da0984c21 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    # Entry for /dev/sda6 :

    UUID=f85c1f62-4944-4212-b112-a3b605a57e28 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    # Entry for /dev/sda5 :

    UUID=a7786acb-cbe8-4d06-8fa0-2ea4840694dc swap swap defaults 0 0

    all of which are regarding the HD and no other devices. any suggestions to get my cd/dvd's to goesgoesgoes?

    try the command "mount" and see if there's your CD/DVD if not then try using the "df" if there's nothing try to mount it manually as root

    su

    then type your root password...

    mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom

    assuming you're using iso9660 hehe...if not type your format there....hope this has helped..

  3. Hello.

    I am new to Mandriva. I just installed Mandriva and want to know what I should install now? Any important packages to install?

    ;

    Also, I tried to use chat on this portal, but it needs Java. I can install it just from Java main site? (I got java installed, on firefox too :) )

    [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman - welcome aboard :)]

    First of all..Welcome aboard...

    Second...what version are you running 2009.0? 2008.1?...2009.1?...if you give us that info using

    uname -a

    in a terminal/konsole...and you now know your mandriva version

    get to easy urpmi and install the repositories for your version...then

    you can do as root

    su

    it will prompt for your root password... so you will have to give it..then

    urpmi --auto-update

    or

    urpmi.update -a

    after that you should check if there's a red icon with and "!" mark so you can install the updates...there was an update not long ago for java SDK so it will be installed 4 you..

    if there isn't any red icon then you should try as root

    urpmi --auto-select -a

    I hope this works for you...it has helped me a lot :D

  4. Firefox 3.0.11 is now available for both Mandriva 2009.0 and 2009.1 in main updates.

    yep I downloaded it today...I was surprise cuz in 2009.1 didn't show the 3.0.9, 3.0.10 releases...when I saw it into the updates I was like wow! jeje

  5. what about the output of

    cat /proc/asound/cardx/codec#x

    where "x" is the number of your card and the codec number it has..

    you can get there (/proc/asound) and then use ls to see which number of directory you have card0, card1...main is card0...and then use "cd card0" or "cd card1" depending on the number and then use ls again and see the codec#x file it could be codec#0, codec#1...then post the output using cat codec#0 or codec#1...I don't really know which one you have....it could make easier to find where's the problem

  6. Some time ago, there was a kernel problem with the audio driver in some distros. See e.g. here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller

    http://www.nabble.com/-Bug-49814--pulseaud...2991694i20.html

    and here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/l....22/+bug/131133

    Maybe you ran into a persisting bug.

    we have to check that because my notebook used to do that before I install the video codecs (it just happened in the video, sound worked fine) make sure your video card have the appropiate driver...have you test it? also make sure the audio drivers are fine using the troubleshooting options...

    that's what I did

  7. I've been waiting for it...(I got a subject called Operating Systems...the professor likes fedora ;) )

    thx 4 the news

    I hope this is a good release

  8. I need a little help

    I've updated my pc (yesterday) it says it had to update some codeina codecs.. and other things...so I thought "ok there's no problem"....after update I turn it off went to sleep...wake up this morning and the video was a little slow, having some lags just playing an avi video..(I didn't had that problem) so I thought it was because I was doing many tasks at the same time...finished those task..I saw the video with its lags...turn it off again...and tonight the problem still...

    those are minor lags but its not a good sign... what can I do?

    any help were to begin?

  9. nice man! thx...works nice...I've being trying to find a video converter to 3gp and didn't find any which convert file supported by my moto L7

    thx! :lol:

    it also has youtube compatibility and you can download directly from it

  10. My printer has a self test, ds17, as yours probably does as well. The printer does not need even to be connected to a computer. I press a couple of buttons in the specified way and out comes a test print-out.

    I should say here that I ran into what might be called a bug. One of the drivers I had installed, in my effort to see that the printer had all the software it needed, had to do with OKI4 printers. This set a "daemon" running, and that gummed up the works. All the applications I ran, kept crashing. I noticed the OKI4 messages on the scrolling screen and removed the offending stuff. All is well again.

    well you may be right but I thought you ran the print test from MCC..my bad :mellow:
