  1. I haven't tried to figure out how to do the timed recording thing, but I just use audigy to record the sound card output while the stream is playing. Had to really turn down the PCM output to get a quality recording without overdriving it, but it worked fine. Used to use a windows program called Streamripper running under VMware, it works great, you can record multiple streams at the same time. With a DSL line I could record 8 or 10 different streams at once. It's no longer officially avialable, but easily found on the net.
  2. The message is telling you that you need the kernel source code files. These are usually stored in a directory called /usr/src/linux-2.4.22mdk or whatever the kernel you're using is called. There is also normally a symbolic link called /usr/src/linux which points to the actual directory with the longer name. Check and see if you have any files installed in those directories. If you don't, you need the kernel-source RPM for the kernel you're running. The reason you need this is that the driver is trying to compile a kernel module and needs the appropriate header files for your kernel in order to compile. For the driver file itself, if you have KDE, just right-click on the file in Konqueror and choose Extract or open with Ark, and archiving utility. Extract the file, then go to a console window, cd to the directory with the driver files in it. Typically the install process is to type "./configure", then "make", finally login as root by typing "su" then "root" and your password. Finally type "make install".
  3. Sarissi - Looks like you're having quite a time getting things going, hang in there, it IS worth the effort. I've been using linux for 5-6 years now, since some of the early commercial releases, and there is a learning curve to figure some things out. On the other hand, personally I get a real sense of satisfaction out of making things work and can see how far the linux community has come in the last few years. Just a couple of years ago the idea of ripping a DVD to Divx and watching the movie on the computer would have been all but impossible, and there are so many new apps being released all the time to make all sorts of things easier. BTW, the NForce2 board works even better under linux than under Windows. I got my old Win2000 partition restored last night and was using ShrinkDVD and the multitasking under Win2K was not nearly as good under Windows as under linux. Just a suggestion for the future, but personally I only get a major upgrade every 18 months or so, and before buying any hardware I always do some research on the net to see if there are any problems with using the hardware under linux before buying it. For example, the ATI video cards are very popular these days, but are much more difficult to get work under linux than the NVidia cards, so when I bought a new vid card a couple of months ago I bought the NVidia 5600 Ultra. Installed the most recent drivers from NVidia and had it up and running 3D games in about 5 minutes. Good luck with your project.
  4. A correction to my last post, finally have determined the cause of the random lockups under heavy disk load, it turned out to be the "Enable CPU Disconnect" option in the BIOS. With that option turned off all is good. Ripping a DVD to Divx, downloading off Usenet, playing some tunes and browsing the web, with no slowdown in the computer, feels just like a single app running. First Nforce2 board for me, but sure happy with this one and the mobile Athlon (and Mandrake 10!) Good luck all.
  5. A few updates... Pulled out the SBlive card and enabled the built-in sound, working fine. So is the Firewire/1394 controller, built-in ethernet, USB, etc. The only "problem" I've had is that when I tried hooking up a CDRW to the SATA controller (via the Abit Serillel adapter) it was quite slow, but worked perfectly. Don't know if the speed problem was the controller or the adapter, but it did work, just decided not to keep it in the system. BTW, the original poster asked about stability / lockups. I'm running this on a fresh-built box, an Abit NF7-s with a mobile Athlon XP 2500 and 1 GB of PC3200 ram, along with an NVIDIA 5600 Ultra 128 mb. The cpu is currently running at 2.5 GHz (default is 1.8) and is stable as can be even under full load for hours. When I first got this running I was having some lockups which I eventually traced down to a BIOS option for "enchance PCI performance". When this option is enabled and there is heavy hard disk activity the system would freeze. With the option disabled my HD transfer rate goes down very slightly, but the lockups have disappeared. Yesterday I ripped a DVD and encoded it to Divx, a good test for stability and all went well. Sarissi - I've used the enterprise kernel, it worked fine. Not sure about the differences but think they're fairly minor. So far the only odd problem I haven't been able to solve is that sometimes e2fsck will freeze up while checking hard drives, think I've heard of others having the same problem, but haven't figured out the cause yet.
  6. For me I had to change the sound module to "emu101k", not the "snd-emu101K", and the system for some reason installed the "audigy" driver by default on installation. Go to the Mandrake Control Center, Hardware section, then click on the sound card and choose "configure". Select the "emu101k" driver and reboot. As noted above, you may also have to open an audio mixer program and turn the volumes up.
  7. I'm running an Abit NF7-S Nforce2 board with 10.0 RC1 (still downloading the final Community Edition). RC1 identified and installed the Nforce2 modules fine. I'm using an old SBLive for sound so haven't tried the built-in sound, when I reinstall with the final Community Edition plan on giving it a try. Also, not using the SATA controller, so can't address that, but the board runs great so far with RC1. When I look in the "hardware" section of Mandrake Control Center all the various on-board components such as IDE, USB, Firewire, etc. are all labelled "Nforce2..."
