  1. Hey! I actually got it fixed! I added the following line under Device in my xorg.conf file: Option "UseDisplayDevice" "CRT-1" Still curious where it's getting CRT-0 from, but at least I've got it solved. Thanks for everyone's help!
  2. I think I see the problem, though i don't know how to change it. Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I see a few weird things. I cannot copy and paste the entire log b/c I can only access the log in safe mode, I cannot get to the GUI. (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0 (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 6800 (NV41) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0) (--) NVIDIA(0): Memorty: 262144 kBytes (--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 05.41.02.34.15 (II) NVIDIA(0): Detected PCI Express Link width: 16X (--) NVIDIA(0): Interlaced video modes are supported on this GPU (--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce 6800 at PCI:1:0:0: (--) NVIDIA(0): CRT-0 (--) NVIDIA(0): Dell E193FP (CRT-1) (--) NVIDIA(0): CRT-0: 400.0 MHz maximum pixel clock (--) NVIDIA(0): DELL E193FP (CRT-1): 400.0 MHz maximum pixel clock (II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: CRT-0 later... (II) NVIDIA(0): Unable to connect to the ACPI daemon; the ACPI daemon may not be running or the "acpidsocketpath" X configuration option may not be set correctly. When the ACPI daemon is available, the NVIDIA X driver can use it to receive ACPI events. For details, please see the "ConnectToAcpid" and "AcpidSocketPath" X configuration options in Appendix B: X Config Options in the README. What I'm wondering, is why can X not find the EDID for device CRT-0? And why is it even trying to use CRT-0 when clearly, my monitor (a flat-screen by the way, not a CRT) is CRT-1? Why is the "assigned display device" being set to CRT-0? Is there a way to change it to CRT-1?
  3. It's a Pentium D, so I believe it's able to run 64bit. From looking at that thread, I think I'll try adding this to my xorg.conf file: Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
  4. I found this thread and this guy was having the exact same issue as I was, but he was using Ubuntu. He was able to get it fixed, but I don't know if anything he did is doable in Mandriva. Could anyone take a look and "translate" it for me?: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=484455
  5. Well no, I can use the GUI if I use the vesa driver. But it's a very generic driver that does not allow me to run a 3d desktop, which I should easily be able to do with a 6800. But yeah, I've been going to MCC and doing exactly what you say above. When I click "Test" is when it goes to the blank screen. Frustrating! Thanks for your help & suggestions though.
  6. Nope! There is nothing displayed on the screen. The screen looks the same as if I'd turned the PC off, and the power button/indicator on my monitor turns orange, as if the PC is turned off. Very weird! The only way I can get around it is to restart my computer by physically holding in the power button to power it off (ctrl+alt+F1/F2 does not work in getting me to the terminal). I think I had this issue with Ubuntu too when I tried to install it on my desktop. I'd think it was a problem specific to the GeForce 6800 if I hadn't found thread after thread of people installing not only Mandriva, but other distros as well, with no problem.
  7. Unfortunately they're running the same kernel (2.6.27.4-desktop-2mnb). I've installed both kernel-desktop-devel-latest and kernel-desktop586-devel-latest (both say 2.6.27.4 under Version).
  8. Thanks! D/l kernel-desktop586-devel-latest solved the issue I had with VMware, but the problem with my GeForce 6800 card on my desktop still remains after d/l this package :(
  9. You know, I was looking for that script yesterday and I could not find it for the life of me. If it's on my computer, it's not where it's supposed to be. However, by d/l & installing kernel-desktop586-devel-latest, I was able to resolve the problem. Thanks for the help everyone!
  10. This issue is on my laptop. The other issue with the GeForce 6800 card is on my desktop computer. (Just FYI) I'm installing this package on my laptop right now and will let you know of the results. Thanks!
  11. Thanks, I'll try that and let you know of the results.
  12. Apparently, when the last update came it, it hosed my VMware Workstation software. Now, when I try to open VMware, I get the following message: No matter what file I select, I get this error message: Any ideas how to fix this?
  13. I have Mandriva installed on my laptop and I like it so much that I decided to install it on my home desktop PC. The install goes fine and everything, but I can only use the generic vesa driver. If I try to use the NVIDIA "GeForce 6100 and later" driver," the screen goes blank and the monitor looks as if it is in standby mode. I've searched and searched and it looks like I may be the only one having this problem, everyone else seems to be able to run a GeForce 6800 easily. Help!

    smb4k issue

Hahaha honestly, I'm brand-new to Linux and almost everything you just wrote to me doesn't make a lot of sense! I had previously installed One 2009 KDE4, and enjoyed using it before Plasma continually crashed with no apparent way to fix it. With KDE4, I had trouble with mounting shares via Samba in the MCC as well as Webmin. I downloaded Smb4k and it worked perfectly just after installation. As I said, I had issues with KDE 4 which eventually lead to me formatting and installing One 2009 Gnome instead. That's what I'm using now (Gnome). I'm trying to use Smb4k because I had gotten comfortable with it when I was using KDE4 on my previous installation. If there is another similar application for Gnome, I'd most certainly try it. But, being a n00b, I don't know much about the different apps available to me. So, maybe you can suggest a program that should work flawlessly for me? I'll try smbnetfs right now.

    smb4k issue

Thanks. I hadn't tried that yet. I did try it after reading your post, but I still get the same error:

    smb4k issue

I downloaded and installed the smb4k package via the package manager, but I have a weird problem when trying to use it. When I try to open smb4k, I get the following error: "Either your PATH environment variable is not set properly or there are the following programs missing on your system: kdesu Please correct this and restart Smb4K." I have the required Samba packages installed, as far as I know, as well as the Kdesu package...but I just can't seem to get around this issue. This worked fine for me when I was running KDE4, but now that I've installed Mandriva One 2009 w/Gnome, it seems to have issues. EDIT: I found this webpage (http://smb4k.berlios.de/handbook/using_smb4k.html), in which it says to "add the location to the PATH environment variable in your shell's configuration file (for the bash(1) shell it is the ~/.bashrc file), before you will be able to run the application" I tried editing ~/.bashrc and adding ‎"/usr/lib/libkdesu.so.5" & "‎/usr/lib/libkdesu.so.5.1.0", but it still doesn't work. Maybe I'm trying to add the wrong location of kdesu?
  17. Yes I do. And I've discovered (with the help of the community @ forum.mandriva.com) that the 3d Desktop is what is causing this. When I disable 3d Desktop, Everything looks fine, but there are two things: I'd really like it to be enabled because (1) I love the cube effect (I'm a Linux n00b and Windows user for 10+ years), and (2) I use Cairo-dock, and apparently, without Compiz enabled I get an bad effect where when I pull up Cairo-dock it shows a black background instead of just showing whatever is behind it (see pic below) After running drak3d as root, I still get the same issue :( The output of 'cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf' is: # File generated by XFdrake (rev 247269) # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the xorg.conf man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "ServerFlags" #DontZap # disable <Ctrl><Alt><BS> (server abort) #DontZoom # disable <Ctrl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> (resolution switching) AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse does not work EndSection Section "Module" Disable "dri" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" # 3D layer EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse2" Driver "evdev" Option "device" "/dev/input/by-id/usb-Logitech_USB_Receiver-event-mouse" Option "HWheelRelativeAxisButtons" "7 6" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "SynapticsMouse1" Driver "synaptics" Option "SHMConfig" "on" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Generic" ModelName "Flat Panel 1280x800" HorizSync 31.5-90 VertRefresh 60 Option "PreferredMode" "1440x900" # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 # 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616 # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_120" 229.75 1440 1552 1712 1984 900 901 904 965 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_100" 187.55 1440 1544 1704 1968 900 901 904 953 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_85" 156.79 1440 1536 1696 1952 900 901 904 945 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_75" 136.49 1440 1536 1688 1936 900 901 904 940 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_60" 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_50" 87.41 1440 1512 1664 1888 900 901 904 926 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_120" 181.21 1280 1376 1520 1760 800 801 804 858 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_100" 147.89 1280 1376 1512 1744 800 801 804 848 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_85" 123.38 1280 1368 1504 1728 800 801 804 840 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_75" 107.21 1280 1360 1496 1712 800 801 804 835 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_60" 83.46 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 828 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_50" 68.56 1280 1336 1472 1664 800 801 804 824 -HSync +Vsync EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 6100 and later" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" Option "DynamicTwinView" "false" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" DefaultColorDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Mouse2" "SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "SynapticsMouse1" "SendCoreEvents" Screen "screen1" EndSection My hardware is a HP dv6810us.   18. Thanks. I've done this (I've actually rebooted the machine) and the issue remains. That also would not explain the reason that title bars on my windows appears to be covered by something. Thanks for your reply though!
  19. Hey, another issue that I'm having with GNOME. Even though I've changed the theme and the mouse pointer, the changes don't show on the title bar of each window. I've attached a picture below: The mouse pointer will only show it's theme when I'm actually using a specific window (for example, I can see the Oxygen themed mouse when the Firefox window is active). When I'm simply on the desktop, it still shows the original generic Mandriva themed mouse pointer.
  20. Unfortunately, these are not listed in my System>Preferences (Appearance nor Power Mgmt.) I would assume this is because I was using KDE4.1 and then switched to Gnome? EDIT: ACTUALLY, I WENT TO THE PACKAGE MANAGER AND INSTALLED THE GNOME CONTROL CENTER AND I NOW HAVE THOSE OPTIONS. THANKS!!
  21. Recently, KDE4 crashed on me so I've been setting up GNOME to use in it's absence. (you can view the thread for my KDE4 issue here: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=97989 and here: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=71984) I'm liking GNOME so far and my conversion to it has been ALMOST seamless. The only things I'm unable to find is the settings for changing the windows themes as well as power options (screen brightness, etc). Can anyone help me out? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  22. Hey, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that did not work :(. I still get the same error when I boot up. Thanks for your help though!
  23. I have my system setup for automatic login. This just started happening today, and I don't know why. When the system boots and gets to the part where it's supposed to show the desktop, I get an error and a black background, with a few programs that just pop up (FF, Skype). Last night, I was having no problem so I don't know what could've caused this. The error says: "A Fatal Error Occured The application Plasma Workspace (plasma) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). Please help us improve the software you use by filing a report..." What can I do to get my desktop back? and to figure out what actually happened? I use KDE4.1. For some reason, I can boot into KDE3.5 without a problem though.
  24. OK guys, I got this fixed. I don't know what caused the original issue, but I fixed it by deleting the '/etc/resolv.conf' file (which had somehow become a symbolic link to '/etc/resovlconf/run/resolv.conf') and copying that same file from a mandriva system I have on a different laptop. All is well. But I wonder how this happened. I wonder could Kvpnc have caused this? or was it just a coincidence that I was attempting to set that up when the issue started...
